I've been wanting for Retro-Bit to create a standard "bean" shaped three button pad for a long time. I find it much more comfortable than the more popular six button variant. This offers the best of both worlds. Though I'm not a fan of the start button placement. All in all though, I love this company, I have just about every variant of their Mega Drive and Saturn pads. Minor quibbles aside, this is another banger.
I love the Big 6. BTW random banter: I adopted a dog, my first doggo ever. I had this video on my TV while playing with him and every once a while he’d react to your voice by doing that puppy head tilt thing they do.
It's a great idea. I remember thinking as a kid back in the day playing the Megadrive, I wished they made the 6 button controller integrated into the original big boy 3 button pad. I liked the official 6 button pad that eventually came out but always thought it was too small and the plastic was not as solid as the 3 button pad. When the Saturn came out with the 6 button pad and it was larger than the Megadrives I thought and still think it's the ultimate 6 button pad for all those arcade games that required it. Kudos to Retro-bit for this pad though. The idea is obviously something that has been wanted for decades.
That picture of young Adam is gold! I'm so glad it was spared from the fire. Thanks for reviewing this, Adam, no matter how niche it is. It's always enjoyable hearing your thoughts
I've had my BIG6 for over a month & it's my fave pad to use for playing MD/Genesis. As someone that grew up using the 3B pad I tolerated the 6B edition purely to have a wireless option, this is such a cool idea to get the best of both worlds and I find the buttons on the Retro-Bit version far more responsive than the original as well.
I believe the placement of the Start button was inspired by the old-ass, infrared wireless Genesis controllers from the 90s. It was called "The Remote Arcade System."
I remember my original 3-button Genesis controller for how nice and loose its buttons felt. You could literally just tap them lightly and it would trigger a press. Tried both of these controllers briefly, and I actually like the D-pad on the wireless controller better. It seems to have a more "loose/rolling" feel to it. The D-Pad on their Saturn USB controller also feels like that too-- really nice. I imagine it's probably kinda tricky to replicate what my actual controller felt like perfectly, lol. But great controllers overall. ;o I think one thing they should do is make a bluetooth version, because I am 100% going to misplace the dongles if I'm not paying attention to where I'm putting them. I'm sorta disorganized. XD
For me this Big6 controller is the best of all worlds: it has the nice 6-button style dpad, orig genesis controller size, and well (duh) 6 buttons for any game compatibility. It's a win. Thanks for the video!
I wish that Sega would start a rewards program for people that are fans that can get points to put them for clothing with Sega or anything with their IP's in clothing form or games or even controllers from Retro-Bit. I think that would be great.
I've got the wireless variant and really like it. I thought the start button placement would bother me, but it's really not that big of a deal. It's required to hit the sync button on the dongle for it to pair for the first time. Another solid controller from Retro-bit.
May I add that I preordered this wireless 6 button and did find a compatibility issue. It was with Virtra Racing Genesis. Works great in 3 button mode but in six button mode it has major steering issues. Just throwing that out there. It is a very nice controller though.
I was always more partial to the OG six-button pad, but I get people maybe wanted that but with the larger form factor of the three-button controller. was GOING to say 'huh this is the most normal thing laud has sent you' but then I saw the note and the boston 8-track, so much for that haha.
It was nice for them to even make this in the first place. The original six button controller is fine, but for me though, it feels small and the buttons, especially the X, Y, and Z buttons feel even smaller than they should.
I like the Sega Genesis Controllers that Retro-Bit has put out but I am still waiting on the wireless Sega Dreamcast controllers . I would love to buy them.
These look awesome dude :) Only one i got is the ice blue 6 button Mega Drive/Genesis one "But it's bluetooth" Great pad over all but these look alot better :D
Thanks, finally, all I wanted to know about this thing was if it had a similar d-pad to the original 3-button controller, so it's much more like a 6-button Sega d-pad, got it. I just love the old 3 button big ass d-pad, the ball bearing under it makes it virtually indestructible. My 3 button is still so snappy after so many years of use, I wish they would use the ball bearing. Wouldn't that pretty much make all Sega d-pads feel better(if designed to use it)? Oh, and I have the old Genesis controller MK-1470, I think it's called the competition pro, but it's an official 6-button Sega pad with the bean shape of a 3 button, I also love that controller. It has turbo too. It's tiny, much smaller than a regular 3 button. If you love the 6-button Sega d-pads, I would say the MK-1470 might be your new favorite, but the face buttons are just a little bit mushy, nothing unplayable, just not perfection like a normal 6button. .
I have the RetroBit 6 button wireless controller (the “bean” transparent blue) that one as you said has micro USB. I see RetroBit now does USB C for charging, but very strange that the V2 Genesis adapter/dongle still has micro USB. Not a problem, just stange
Splatterhouse 2 & 3 sitting neatly on the shelf behind you... Naturally. Something about Sega always felt a little edgier than Nintendo. Still does actually. Anyways, great video! Very helpful...
I'm guessing the shoulder buttons make it fully compatible with the Saturn? if it is that means you get the same ergonomics over 2 console generations. Also nice to see you still had your wristband on although it's hard to imagine you got home that quickly and managed to still make the video.
8:00: Odd that it's Boston who reminds the guy of Sonic; 'cause if there's any group from the 8-track/analog cassette era whose anthems are reminiscent of Sonic, it'd be Journey. (For those who don't know, that's because back in the day Journey's guitarist co-founded a group with Crush 40's vocalist, Johnny Gioeli. If you've played either or both of the Sonic Adventure games, you'd know Johnny as the guy who co-composed and performed 'Open your Heart' & 'Live & Learn'.) I've had Retro-Bit Genesis & Saturn wired controllers for about three years now. No complaints with the Saturn controller, but like you, I seemed to have a little trouble getting cheat codes in Sonic 2 to implement properly. A weird, but ultimately minor hitch. Still aching for them to get on making that Dreamcast controller they've long-promised.
I totally understand your point regarding Boston reminding me of Sonic. I think I mostly attribute that with how some of the music in Sonic CD sounds-- the credits music uses 12-string guitar and has a very "clean"-sounding metal/hard rock sound to it, which is like how Boston sounds. Also, my older cousin showed me both Sonic/Sega and Boston when I was little, so that's probably a factor as well. Some of Boston's songs like "Smokin"/"Cool the Engines"/"Hitch a Ride" are sorta Soniccy. Some of the lyrics in Foreplay/Long Time are: "It's been such a long time, I think I should be going. Time doesn't wait for me, it keeps on rolling. Sail on, on a distant highway. I've got to keep on chasing a dream. I've gotta be on my way.... etc.". Lol. But yeah, that's my logic for that. xD
I was like, where's the thumbnail. Alright, I didn't have time to watch this early, sorry. I am now. Also, I'm gonna coordinate with Dave and such regarding January. I NEED to go back to Japan.
My only negatives are that sometimes the L and R buttons on the wireless controllers stick and stay in. This isn't really a big deal because Genesis games don't use those buttons. My other gripe is if you go from the Genesis v2 dongle to the USB v2 dongle, you have to reset the controller via the pub hole button on the back. Same if going the other way. I go back and forth from Retropie t real hardware all the time, and I find myself having to do this every time. "First world" problems lol. Lotmot sounds like a cool guy who just wants to spread the love of retro stuff. "An 8 track....called Boston?!" Lol. Great video Adam.
@@dtester yeah it could be just mine. The shoulder buttons stiuck from the get-go. But I dont really use it so I don't care. Its not worth sending it back. QC issue probably.
Stupid question, but do RetroBit's wired controllers add any additional latency when hooked up to an original Genesis or Saturn for ex, Vs the original/authentic 6 button Genesis and Saturn wired controllers? Just curious, because i can definitely feel a bit of latency with the 2.4ghz Wireless versions and 8BitDo's latest 2.4g controllers for the Nes & gen.

In my experience, After market controllers for retro consoles have always been iffy for me because they never feel as sturdy as the og controllers IMO. Also I was at Anime Central 2 weeks ago and bought a pinkish Dreamcast controller the seller said was a Japanese exclusive color. Did you make a video about colored controllers that were exclusive to Japan? The controller definitely was not for the Hello Kitty Dreamcast that was exclusive since the Hello Kitty Logo was not present on the controller I went ahead and got it because I liked the color, but I feel like something is off about their claim
The RetroBit ones are pretty good, Sega has to approve them. I'm not familiar with the specific controller you're referring to, but tons of weird ones came out in Japan I've never seen.
Curious if this works with Insane Pain. Funny enough eventhough retro-bit's controllers are the SEGA licensed ones so you would expect the best quality my wired 6 button controller from them is the only one that doesn't work correctly with that specific game. Hyperkin, 8bitdo, old SEGA controllers... All work fine, just not retro -bit's. I am waiting for a European MD branded version before I buy though.
Your original 3 button controller looks different than mine... Mine has the letters colored red. I bought it off of Ebay way back before this controller came out. Got my hands on it and i like it... The Dpad on it is simply sublime. I can’t use the OG MD controller there days as the Dpad feels very stiff to me now. Great video Adam.
I bought 2x of the wired six button retrobit genesis controllers like a year ago. When I touched my CRT TV screen while holding one of the controllers, I got a nasty static shock and the controller died and stopped working. Then I tried it with the second controller, and got a shock again, and that controller stopped working too. Returned them to Amazon and haven't trusted RetroBit since. Anyone else have this problem?
A 6-button Genesis controller in the bean shape? Man if I actually had a use for this, too bad it doesn't have out of box Genesis Mini support. - Also young Adam iis missing ONE thing. THE BEARD! 😂
As you probably know, many people have an issue with the previous RetroBit 6 button controller, specifically with the C button. In some games it registers like multiple fast presses when holding down. Could you test if the Big6 suffers from this? An easy test is in Sonic 2, hold C by itself and it should do a long jump, obviously. The broken controllers do multiple short jumps. Thanks.
I can see why people like these new Bluetooth controllers for playing their consoles on newer TV’s where they sit 20 feet away or so but I still have a tube tv where I sit only a few inches away from the screen so for me personally I don’t think this will be something I will get.
@@AdamKoralik I’ve just ordered the controller btw. I can’t seem to find a mega drive one though it’s only available with the genesis logo from what I can find online anyway 🤷🏻♂️
I never liked any of the controllers that Sega ever released. SNES, GCN's Wavebird, and PS1 through PS3 are my favorites. I couldn't stand the Dreamcast controller. With all that said, I really wish Sega would return to the hardware business. Make us a new handheld! Maybe Shenmue 4 can be released exclusively for it!! I miss the Sega of the 90s. Risky but innovative. Wouldn't it be cool if Sega released a handheld shaped like the 6-button Genesis controller? I see Chinese handhelds shaped like the SNES controller. Why no love for the Sega ones? I hear Sega's 3D Control Pad for Nights Into Dreams is their best controller. I really do miss Sega of yesteryear. I would love to get a Sega Nomad just to have in my collection but I'm NOT spending $250+ for one when I can play all Genesis/Mega Drive games on my phone and Vita. It's for the sake of owning another Sega handheld. Nomad is basically the OG Switch 22 years before the Switch came out. Nice Sega hoodie jacket, Adam. I basically call you The Shenmue Man. Shenmue II remains my 2nd favorite game of all-time only behind the OG Final Fantasy VII. I can play it on my Z Flip 3 using Redream. But it's the Euro one with subs. I know people prefer it that way and I did beat Euro Shenmue II that way 2 years before I bought the Xbox version. Paid $70 for it + the disc to insert before you insert a Shenmue II disc. It's one of those discs to bypass the region lock. But I got so used to the Xbox version of Shenmue II. I did buy the Shenmue Collection for my PS4 but never got to play it much. I'm planning to get a Steam Deck just to play the dubbed Shenmue II. It doesn't make sense playing Shenmue I in English and then listening Shenmue II in Japanese. I want to hear Adam's homeboy, Corey Marshall, to speak as Ryo, ya know? No matter how wooden the delivery is. So I'll probably get a Steam Deck just for that. Shenmue 1-3 available on Steam. Much props to Corey marrying a Filipina 🇵🇭.
One day wired controllers will all be wireless with a separate device that makes them wireless like the Wiimote did on the Wii. And all these expensive wireless devices with built-in batteries will be obsolete. They are a pain to charge if you have enough.of them. Would be so much easier if it was one separate device you had to charge for cheap wired controllers you would connect to it.
Nintendo did it back in '89 with the NES Satellite. Had 4 controller ports, but relied on IR for wireless communication, so it needed line of sight to work. Looks like it had 15' of range, and needed 6!! C batteries 😬
@@3800scgp Yeah And 8bitdo recently had the right idea with the 8bitDo GBros Wireless Adapter. It takes wired nes classic, snes classic, wii and gamecube controllers makes them wireless on switch. We need more of this. Why pay extra for batteries?

I bought 2x of the wired six button retrobit genesis controllers like a year ago. When I touched my CRT TV screen while holding one of the controllers, I got a nasty static shock and the controller died and stopped working. Then I tried it with the second controller, and got a shock again, and that controller stopped working too. Returned them to Amazon and haven't trusted RetroBit since. Anyone else have this problem?
Wow, never heard of that....
@@AdamKoralik Any chance you would do some sort of Electro-Static Discharge tests on the ones you bought to see if they are also susceptible as well?
That's a weird issue. The dpad on mine broke while I was playing contra hard corps. And it was already out of warranty.
A 6-button Genesis controller in the bean shape? Man if I actually had a use for this, too bad it doesn't have out of box Genesis Mini support.

Also young Adam iis missing ONE thing. THE BEARD! 😂
Does it work on astro city mini?
As you probably know, many people have an issue with the previous RetroBit 6 button controller, specifically with the C button. In some games it registers like multiple fast presses when holding down. Could you test if the Big6 suffers from this? An easy test is in Sonic 2, hold C by itself and it should do a long jump, obviously. The broken controllers do multiple short jumps. Thanks.
Have YOU had issues with this? I still have my 6 button pads from 2019 and NEVER had these 'issues'
#sega4life!!!
Adam, what is your pick for LEAST favorite SEGACD game if you exclude FMV-based garbage like Sewer Shark & that Power Rangers QuickTime abomination?
I don't know, that's kind of hard without those.
I can see why people like these new Bluetooth controllers for playing their consoles on newer TV’s where they sit 20 feet away or so but I still have a tube tv where I sit only a few inches away from the screen so for me personally I don’t think this will be something I will get.

Was/is Thomas the tank popular in America? I’m from England so I just assumed it was only popular here
Oh definitely.

They should have made an original 3 button controller imho, this controller serves no purpose when original 6 button controllers exists.

Had a Team Sonic Sega track suit Sega gave me in 2009 unfortunately it got "Lost" in a move 😡
