    The "original" as you put it was the FM78 (Feldmesser 1978) introduces one year after the Steyr AUG ("StG77") assault rifle - hence the hollow grip, though it was never used as a bajonett. Originally designed for the Austrian army the "real" ones which we were issued with will have a symbol on the blade, just in front of the guard: a circle with a triangle in it, symbol for the ÖBH (Österreichisches Bundesheer).
    Steel is 1085 high carbon, this knife is a utility field and combat knife. Tough, but easy to resharpen in the field, though it isn't meant to be sharp! We use it to chop, cut ice, pry doors open, dig in hard packed earth and pierce barrels. This was never made as a cutting weapon (slashing etc.). That grip will also save your hands in our winters (-20°C when I was on winter manoeuvres in the Alps).
    We abused the heck out of those things, but they never failed.

    • @jonasdeejee890
      @jonasdeejee890 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine came totally blunt except for the tip, was a bit disappointed since I have no idea on how to sharpen it without changing the blade edge profile. Was it meant to be used as a pure stabbing weapon in the Austrian army?

    Be advised, they only make the 78 in black now, so if you own a 78 in OD dont abuse them as much. If you want to silence the sheath, take some paracord inner strands, wrap the around the tip of the blade and stick it down the sheath. Now glue segments of the outer paracord inside the top of the sheath.

  • @stevanoutdoor

    When I was in the Army we only got the SAK Dutch army model and is basically a bit thicker version of the SAK Soldier. Great pocket knife but I wanted something more sturdy so first chance I got I took my Glock 81 model in OD, like my uniform (we did not use camo back than) and this combination of pocket knife and Glock served me well. I was not allowed to carry it but they never did find out, so that's ok. ;) Later changed to the 78 model and altered it a bit. That bottle opener is part of the attachment to mount on a rifle, so I cut that part of, altered the bevel and some alterations to the sheath. It is probably the toughest 'plastic' handle around for a stick tang knife. Still use it when I want a second knife but not add to much weight.

    • @mrd7067
      @mrd7067 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 81 (the version with the grater) is a prohibited weapon regarding the rules of war. They may be old but are still in place. The bottle opener makes a good handguard so you don`t slip and i guess it wold be quite effective if you happen to parade a other blade.
      The biggest downsides are rust, the problem to deploy it one handed asap and that you have to quiet them down yourself because they rattle.

      The "bottle opener" is actually used to mount the knife like a bayonet onto the STG 58 rifle.

    • @seamac7966
      @seamac7966 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong it was to mount to the Styer AUG rifle as the model 78 knife was adopted by the Austrian army in 1978 after the STG 58 was retired.

    I served 2 years in the austrian army with the FM78 - still love it!
    This Sollingen knive is not the original - its just a clone. The FM78 was designed by Gaston Glock in cooperation with the austrian special forces (Jagdkommando) and the regular army (Bundesheer).
    The "saw" on the FM81 is not for sawing a branch, mate. Its a rasp/grater to make tinder ;)

    I have that same knife. And it's not even a full tang construction but it took that punishment. You can rely on it. Nice to know Mayor, makes me feel confident if I ever carry it with me. Keep up the good work.

    I'm looking for a video that shows the best way to remove the end cap so the hollow handle can be accessed. The hollow handle is for either storing survival items, or for converting the knife into a spear.

      I would not use a knife as an spear if you hit an animal it could run away or your knife could break it is easier to carve one

      Update: there's now a fairly well known way to improvise the pommel. First, here's some trivial info: Gaston Glock designed these knives to be used as bayonets for the Steyer AUG rifle. The partially hollow handle has threads that screw onto a special piece on the rifle. Ok. Also, there's a commonly used system for fitting an M14 bolt into the butt. Some ppl blue the bolt. It makes an effective bone cruncher/hammer. A guy on Ebay offers the kit/instructions or will do it for you. It can be waterproofed with an o ring. A few folks have used the handle like a Rambo knife. Finally, I haven't found a source for purchasing replacement end caps. The caps usually become damaged while being removed. They are extremely tight from the factory.

    The Glock knife is like a straight man walking into a gay bar. You think its going to be all super weird, but once you try it out its fine. Nobody gets raped, the music is a bit "90s" and its probably nicer than the bars you've been drinking in recently. It's a bit weird and European but its solid as fuck, cheap, and you can rely on it. Much more than you can rely on a DJ in a gay club.

    nice sword collection in the background when you're testing the bottle opener Mayor! Love your content man and I seriously trust your reviews you put everything through its paces way past the point of abuse and it's awesome for a person who plans to take a blade camping and be able to rely on it. I just want to suggest for when you do the incredibly destructive tests on brick or cinder block that you wear a leather jacket and Dickies pants or some other form of cut resistant material after seeing you absolutely destroy blades on those. It could go a long way in terms of PPE after most of the force is taken out on contact leather or a thick work material that's hard to cut down a ton of the risks involved in those tests. I am in a pretty tight sword community with a ton of smith's and they mostly recommend covering the wrists when profiling a blade on a grinder or doing destructive tests on a batch. You seem to be taking reasonable precautions though and I just want you to be able to keep up these amazing reviews without injury, also bandage your wounds a quicker and a bit more lol you're awesome keep it up from one bladesman to another!!

      For sure friend, thanks for the tips ! On knives that are questionable, I usually wear long sleeve ripstop with kevlar strips wrapping my forearms. I knew that the Glock 81 could survive, as I have used so many Glock knives this way in the past to impress friends and family. I am glad you love the tests, and I will get some good PPE someday.
      Thanks for supporting the Mayor :)

    To get that plug out of the handle take a nylon line thru a hole drilled into the cap . leave a loop on the out side take both line thru a sized washer that fits the inside do a good knot that the lines cannot pull thru the washers hole . You now have a small loop to grab to remove the plug

    Glock field knives are dope. I have the 78 which is a plain edge in OD green that I got for like 27 bucks.
    These things are tuff and inexpensive enough to just beat the hell out of them and not care too much.
    Worth the money

    You did to your glock knife, That I would not do. Got mine in 83 during my AT with the national Guard and used it for the six years I was in. The top of the cap on the handle was broken off from knife throwing, But it's still great.
