      I’m attempting to learn Dutch! I have no idea how much to learn everyday, some people say don’t learn too much since it’s “rushing” so only do like 15-30 min a day. However others say to do like an hour or 2. Which do you recommend?

    I like the non-bragging tone of this video which many of the youtube language people have. I have a couple of tips you could try and see if they fit to your schedule/learning convenience. They may help to optimize your routine :)
    1) You can directly start your day with your target language by using a (web)radio alarm set to a station of the language (preferably a station where they talk a lot, so usually either a news or cultural station, or some kind of podcast). I recommend letting the alarm go off with the volume increasing over 10-20 minutes so that you don't immediately wake up but get sprinkled with the language while your brain is relaxed and very susceptible during the half dreamy phase of waking up. On the plus side, this method doesn't need any extra time nor extra effort.
    2) To review your vocabulary, it's better to embed words into context/phrases/sentences than using just single words alone as memory works like a web in your brain and the more context, the more memory knots. And as with lists, you can't really differentiate between vocabulary that's easy or hard for you, I'd rather recommend using some kind of spaced repetition with either a flashcard box after the Leitner system or even better a digital flashcard program like Anki (which is available for all computer systems and Android and iPhone. And you can syncronize your progress between the devices) It's more efficient regarding study time and vocabulary retention as the algorithm calculates the optimal time span for the next rehearsal for each vocabulary item according to your respective feedback. And you can add audio and pictures which give your additional anchor points to memorize (memory knots in your memory web in the brain).
    And having the program on your phone, you usually have it always with you and can do a quick vocab session whenever you have some idle time (waiting at the bus stop, during your commute in the bus etc.)
    3) Audiobook that correspond to a book you read.
    a) If you listen to the audiobook while reading (or first read then listen) you can work on your listening skills which usually are particularly difficult to improve as in real-life situations, in contrast to written texts or your own speking or writing output, you have very little influence on the speed of it.
    b) You can listen to the audio and then speak after it (parrotting/shadowing) to train your pronunciation and output fluency. It's even better if you record yourself (i.e. with a program like audacity) and then compare your pronunciation to the original and correct and re-record yourself until you don't hear any difference anymore (for the start, I recommend doing it with single words or single phrases where you've already checked the vocabulary, so you really can concentrate on the pronunciation and don't struggle with the vocabulary additionally)
    Cheers and good luck with your Italian :)

    Very good practical advice. 👍🏻
    No vlog intro, no paid advertisements, no corny catch phrase (is: spanish bloggers are constantly overly enthusiastic and beginning their videos with something like “Vamonos!” “Lets go!”).
    No-nonsense and straight to the point.

    I love to listen to Coffee Break Italian, which is great for basics and reviewing everything you have been learning on your own. Plus, they are making Live videos on their facebook page every week with exercises (e.g. the other day the put up a picture of a wedding and you have to explain in Italian what's going on). I have also explored Radio shows on RAI Radio 2. Just like you, I feel like just listening to news is a bit depressing, and even more right now with all the situation worldwide, but do not love to hear music all the time because I have not found any interesting Radio Show just playing Italian music. My favourite one is called Il Ruggito del Coniglio and combines everything. It is more like a "comedy" morning show, they talk news briefly in a humorous note and they bring out daily topics for people to call (e.g. BBQs that go wrong, Films you may have seen 204820 times but it is impossible for you to get to the end, ...) and they intercalate each section of the show with music, some in English, some in Italian. I just started learning Italian about 3 weeks ago (although I am Spanish) and I already understand most of what they are talking about.
    In terms of shows I sometimes watch Peppa Pig (lol) to review basic vocabulary and I recently started to watch "Le Cucine da Incubo", which is like Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares".
    Thanks for making these videos, when I started learning 3 weeks ago I saw your first video of speaking Italian in 30 days and it did keep me inspired to know there can be a real progress working on your own, even if you have a busy schedule or a big workload on daily basis!

It’s good because the episodes are almost 2 hours and it’s based on a Sicilian crime book series. It has some Sicilian dialect in as well which is cool!

Just a thing, if you don't mind me saying that: 'scrittoio' is not a very common word in Italian (I think it's a bit old fashioned, maybe?), you'd prefer to say 'la scrivania', when you're using a table to study or write on.

    I like listening my Indian language (Malayalam) when I'm doing exercises in the afternoon. It's hot and sticky where I live now, which reminds me of being there, and I incorporate some of the exercises from the martial art I studied when I was over there (kalarippayattu). It's a short routine, perfect for a lunch break, and I already needed to set aside time for exercise. I find that physical activity makes things somehow crisper and more memorable; but also, the two habits enforce each other. Sometimes, I'm not excited about my language studies, but I'm looking forward to getting up and moving. Other times, I would have trouble motivating myself to get up and exercise, but I want to know what happens next in a story or what have you. One block of time, and it covers *two* things people say they never have enough time for.

    Hey Shea,
    So I met this girl on Hellotalk and she's from Chile, and she's really fun, but our conversations are always limited due to our limited spanish and English. We want to connect more, so we are doing a one week challenge just like Nathaniel Drew with his Portuguese and Italian challenge. Since we are both in High school and in Quarantine, we have most of each day to practice and study our languages. I will meet back up with her in a week to test how we did and see where it goes.
    So the question I'm trying to ask is, is there such thing as too much studying or practicing when you have too much freetime, especially during times like these? I already have a solid foundation thanks to the spanish classes I have in school, but I'm doing my own study right now, and throughout the week I want to also focus on refreshing my knowledge of the use of present, preterite, and imperfect.
    Is all this too much to be doing within a week when me and her have all this free time for English and Spanish?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! That sounds awesome that you guys are challenging each other. I think that you definitely don’t want to burn out, but some people can focus a lot longer than others. When you get in a “flow state” you can focus on studying for hours really. Just make sure your method of learning is something you enjoy. I’d recommend never forcing yourself if you really don’t feel like studying. Switch it up with reading, listening, speaking etc. there’s nothing wrong with studying as much as you want, especially with this free time! I usually study about 2 hours+ every day right now.

      Yes unfortunately many people do treat it that way. When I used to use Tandem, you could filter to just talk to men or women, so I chose women and found that it was easier to have normal, friendly interactions, although I don't know if they've changed since then.

Learn some phrases to talk about yourself, then expand. Try reading books for children! They are very simple and can help you learn because they will be great for beginners.

    Hello Shea, thanks for the video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks so much for the tips :) I've been learning italian and loved it so far. Sometimes I struggle what to actually study as theres so much to learn. Just curious, did you find studying the 1000 common words helpful? For instance, did you learn a lot of infinitive verbs through it? I'm currently doing that but I wonder how helpful it is without context. Looking forward to your italian video :)

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great, I'm so glad to hear it! Yes, I found it helpful because now those words are so solidified in my head, and they're very good for basic conversation. I did learn a lot of verbs through it, but you may want to separately look up the most common verbs and practice conjugating those in different tenses. Don't spend too much time on vocab because you're right, it won't be super helpful without context. I heard someone describe learning like going up stairs. You need two legs to go upstairs, but if you are only learning vocabulary and not grammar, you're only using that one vocabulary leg to ascend and it will be much harder than if you have the stability of both legs (i.e. vocabulary + grammar together). Does that make sense? So yes, start studying verbs and vocab, but make sure to apply them in simple sentence structures as well!

    • @danielk1274
      @danielk1274 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SheaJordan Thanks for the reply! Ah yeah I suppose it can only help learning more vocab but that makes a lot of sense by learning both simultaneously together :) I think I will learn some more verbs but concentrate on conjugating the more common ones - thanks for that. I'll get cracking on and then see how I am in a month or so! Good luck with the future vids - looking forward to the italian upload!
