    Good berserk video.
    But the life lesson about controlling rage hit home pretty hard.
    I genuinely love your videos because you don't just give an analysis of the video or topic you're covering, but you honestly make it really relatable to everyday people problems, and that makes it a million times more interesting to listen to as opposed to your regular explanation video!
    Love ya man!💜

      Great theory, but berserkers attack everyone in the vicinity, friend or foe. I would assume that if Guts took care of Grenbeld, he would have turned on his friends. That is probably why Flora was banished from Elfhelm.

      i like your line of reasoning though, its possible that since he himself was already a demon, further sacrifice transformed his whole mind and ego into raw rage and the physical manifestation of pain and destruction, leaving his mind shattered in much the opposite way that Casca's was

    Fun fact: some historians hypothesise that the berserkers in old times were actually soldiers with severe ptsd/shellshock. However, while we today know that is a form of mental trauma which only gets worse with battles, back then they thought they had simply been given a power, that when battle started and their ptsd kicked in, they would lash out violently against everyone around them.
    Which is also pretty fitting, as Casca and I bet Guts also suffers from PTSD from their experiences, and Guts uses it to enter his blood frenzy even before he gets the berserker arlor

    • @RedsawSixtySix
      @RedsawSixtySix 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Cool story, ptsd and shellshock get you killed in combat though. Shellshock especially, but shellshock is more a state of heavy concussion which wouldn't really be applicable, in the same way we understand it now, to medieval/ancient warfare.

    • @Radditz770
      @Radditz770 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@RedsawSixtySix taken from wiki:
      "Shell shock is a term coined in World War I by British psychologist Charles Samuel Myers[2] to describe the type of post traumatic stress disorder many soldiers were afflicted with during the war (before PTSD was termed)."
      Shellshock is an older term for ptsd before ptsd was coined. It's not a concussion thing.
      But absolutely, what I posed is just a theory, which is why I said some historians hypithesise it, and not that it's fact.

      I think the hypothis that Berserk was just a champion appointed by the warlord, often to challange a man in opposing army in a duel rings more true than anything.
      The word itself may come from some insident when someone did fight bare chested; probably in a similar manner as above. Like if it was decided in a ting that two men were to fight to settle a dispute, a situation where the particiatns seldom wore armor.

    Couple things I want to mention that weren't brought up directly but warrant discussion:
    1. As pointed out by zegodhand, the Berserker Armor can "substitute" missing limbs for the wielder.
    Normally the prosthetic isn't able to move by itself, but the armor can let it move freely like there really is an arm there.
    2. The Berserker armor doesn't just let the wielder operate "at maximum capacity indefinitely".
    Normally the human body has hard limiters on how much muscle mass it can use (I hear the number is between 10-20%).
    The Berserker armor lets the wielder tap into 100% of the body mass, not only amplifying their strength/speed but also doing so indefinitely.
    Baki the Grappler did something similar to this early in its series with tapping into endorphins. Baki threw himself down a hole and forced them to activate.
    3. I'm convinced there's more than just a visual parallel between In-Control Berserker Guts and Femto. Both of them in their respective panels had gone beyond your normal humanity and are caped in black. Both are willing to trade over something in exchange for more power (Griffith with his friends, Guts with his physical well-being).

    • @chrismcleanmclean238
      @chrismcleanmclean238 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I have a couple things to mention too... the armour is animated in berserker form as you mentioned being able to move limbs that arent there.
      The armour cant be removed by normal means in a Frenzy/rage/berserker sate.
      The armour can repair itself if damaged part of the animation of it... the armour cant be destroyed my normal means because its stated to be an artifact like the one ring of Lord of the rings.
      The user continues to remain in a frenzy regardless of time as long as there are animate objects in sight the frenzy will not end..
      also the wieldr must make a will power "save" or fall into a frenzy in combat.
      heres the D&D specs for the berserker amour....
      • Berserker Armor, +1 Mithral Full Plate
      •• While wearing the berserker armor, a wielder with the ability to enter a frenzy must make a will save to avoid doing so every round in which they engage in melee combat, even if they take no damage. In addition, they may not enter a rage unless already in a frenzy.
      •• While the wielder is in a frenzy, the berserker armor is treated as a +2 Mithral Full Plate of Medium Fortification that cannot be removed by normal means. The wielder themself gains an additional +6 to strength and dexterity as a well as an immunity to fear, stun, nausea and death from massive damage. However, the damage they take every round is lethal instead of nonlethal, and the frenzy does not end normally as long as there are living or animate creatures within the vicinity. At the end of a frenzy, the wielder takes 1 permanent wisdom damage.
      •• If the wielder has the deathless frenzy ability and would die at the end of a frenzy due to hit point loss, they instead heal to -9 hp and stabilize while permanently reducing their maximum number of hit points by the same amount.

      Something I've noted about Guts' prosthetic arm/hand is it seems to have *some* functionality in combat, likely because of Guts residing in the Interstice, where intangible thought can effect the physical world, allowing Guts to use it somewhat like his old flesh and blood hand when his subconscious "forgets" that it's just a lump of metal

But as you heard, the reason it is dangerous is because it allows you to face your inner demon and either submit, or claim him and thereby transcend it... Its like fire, not dangerous really, just very powerful if used, and if used recklessly, well, there have you the old addage on power and corruption, and scaling thereof to infinity... But power can not be corrupting if you claim it and realize it comes from within, for how can you be corrupted by yourself... only that which is from without can corrupt, or that which is thought of as something apart... Just as fire can not burn itself, so too power can not corrupt that which is its source or it itself...

I always assumed this is what the berserker armor was doing. just letting him use all his muscles, despite the damage it causes to yourself (and it does irl as well. research it some.)

    The moment of mentioning "mad dog" jolts back the scene in the anime, episode 5, where Casca berates Guts who has no regard for his men and only lusts for battle, "You're just a mad dog!" which enrages Guts. He grabs Casca's arm and threatens her to "Say it again! Say it again if you dare!" So it seems very befitting, that Guts donning the berserker armor, would lead to the appearance of a wild feral hound.

    Berserkers were highly esteemed warriors known for their insane ferocity. There's a lot of mysticism and romanticism around them and their famed "Berserker rage". In reality, they were less like crazed bloodthirsty savages and more like the Old Norse version of a paladin, or holy knight. They were very spiritual and religious, and they were highly trained warriors who were held in the highest regard a warrior could hold among their people. They would've bean heavily armored and heavily armed, not bare chested, though Im sure there were examples of that, it wouldn't have been the norm. They were also said to channel the gods and/or animal spirits when they fought. "Berserkers" or "bear/bare skins" got their name because the rite of passage for earning that title was to go out into the wilderness and kill and skin a bear with their bare hands, and then come back wearing its pelt as proof they actually did it. You could even judge a Berserkers merit by the size of the pelt they brought back. Ulfhednar were a very specific kind of Berserker that were instead wolf oriented rather than bear oriented, and who were held in even higher regard than a regular Berserker. Berserkers were no mere barbarians, but indeed were the Old Norse equivalent to having tanks on the battlefield. If you knew what a Berserker was, and one was coming for you, you ran. Period.

    The natural comparison with the berserker armor is the Jungian Shadow. The Nietzschian superman assimilates his shadow so he isn't prey to the pathology of the crowd. If the blackswordsman is anything, he is that. He embodies his shadow and appears a villain to others in order to actually follow his moral convictions. The berserker armor is a second helping of this metaphor.

    This isn't even speculation, it's more like "hey, wouldn't this be cool?" but what if the skull knight is Lord Gaiseric's beast of darkness? When Guts put on the armor the helmet changed to the shape of a wolf head to match the beast of darkness, so it would follow that Gaiseric could have had something similar, except his darkness took the form of a massive skeleton warrior, which could have overrode his human form when he became undead due to being bled out by the armor, representing him being overtaken by his beast of darkness. If Guts meets the same fate as Skull Knight and dies to the armor maybe his undead form would look something like the armored dog from Casca's dream world

    Thought I just had: The Berserker Armor only shows up around the time Guts seemlingly lets go of his desire for vengeance against Griffith. Before the party boards the boat he is completely torn between fighting Zodd (after working with him to defeat the mist form of the emperor) and continuing toward Griffith, but he chooses instead to leave with his companions on their journey to heal Casca. It is slightly implied he doesn't think he has it in him to fight Zodd (and likely all the other Apostles) and then Griffith but really he chose to leave because he at this point cares more about his companions (not necessarily ESPECIALLY Casca, either, which is important to note but worthy of another talk on another analysis. So the fact that the armor has been shown on multiple occasions to be attempting to take over (allowing the rage inside Guts to manifest, as you stated in the video, but also allowing it to gain control and usurp Guts' own personality), only to be fought off by his will, is important. To me, the armor isn't necessarily a positive use of his rage just yet, though it could be later in the story. Right now, as I see it, it's almost an enemy. A hidden emotion, or something he's bottling up so to speak, that represents the actual hatred and anger inside him even as he attempts and demonstrates his ability to move forward more positively, and let revenge go. Like if you were really pissed off at someone with a valid reason, then something else happened and out of convenience (like you started at the same job as them, for instance, etc, whatever), you had to put that desire and anger aside. But it still boils in you, and could leap out at any time. To me the armor is sort of like that, Guts' very dangerous desire to go all out, forsake his friends and even Casca (the alleged main point of his desire for revenge btw), and commit himself to his own total war. This also brings up the idea of him using Casca and even the betrayal of the Band of the Hawk as an excuse, similar to The Punisher maybe using his family as an excuse, to indulge in the inherent violence of his life, all he's known and all he wants to know. But that again is a discussion for another time. But I definitely think the Berserker Armor is meant to be his buried desire which sometimes rears its ugly head.

    12:53 - 13:11 Kinda like the Abyss in dark Souls. The Dark Soul/ humanity was suppressed by the seal of fire placed upon them by Gwyn who feared it/them, and it ironically festered and grew stronger within. Then all of a sudden with a bit of provocation by the people of Oolacile, it came bursting out in this all consuming plague. The darksign is symbolic of Gut’s denial while Humanity/ the Dark Soul is Guts, and the Abyss is the beast of Darkness. In a sense the latter two are one in the same. The Abyss/Beast of Darkness is a bastardised version of Humanity/Guts.
