  • Went on an overnight trip recently aboard the Thunderbird out of Davey's Locker (Newport Beach, CA). Top priority was BIG yellowtail. Secondary was a good calico bass bite. While the overall bite was slower than we/I would have preferred (cloudy conditions are not ideal for San Clemente Island fishing), there were still some fish to be caught.
It was a decent trip overall, (my first trip of the season), but it ended with me needing/wanting more...

If it was not an active sardine, I would have. Sometimes, they just need a reset so-to-speak. They get shocked when slamming onto the water surface and don't swim the right direction. Usually, when you recast, they figure it out. If not on the 2nd cast right away, I'll put a new one on.

I know we all start somewhere but Damm, this is the reason I don't fish overnight anymore. Sorry. Leave the spinning gear at home. And learn how to fish. Always the white spectra

no wonder you hate rockfishing, you made it 3 times harder using 2nd gear! you said it yourself that it wasn't a heavy fish why would you switch to 2nd and reel 2-3 times as long. save 2nd gear for fighting heavy fish where you need that extra torque to winch them up. although it can get tiring, rockfishing is a good prerequisite to build the strength for deep dropping for halibut(1000+ feet) in the northwest, or vertical jigging for bluefin at night at 250-600 feet. you can rest conventional setup on the rail until youre strong enough, good day otherwise!

I have an extreme dislike of rockfishing for 2 reasons: first, it's the most boring fishing of all time. Drop WAY too much weight down, wait for a tug tug, reel up the fish. There is no fight (for most fish). The same effort for a 1lb fish or 30lb fish. Second, I'm not a "must eat fish to survive" person, so I don't need the fillets. If I was, I'd just go on a 1/2 day trip for $65 and load up on sculpin. That's at most 100ft of water and super easy. I put the reel in 2nd because we weren't in any hurry. Why rush it if I don't need to??? Btw, 2nd gear makes it easier to reel up, just takes longer, so not sure what you mean by making it 3x harder....
I have no desire to drop 1000ft down - unless I'm going for swordfish - which is WAY more worth it than halibut (as much as I like halibut, for me, it's not worth THAT much to me). Again, I don't need to eat fish to survive. Bluefin is fun...until you've caught your fair share of 200lbers - which I have (9 to be exact). Then it's just becomes work. The novelty for the big tuna has worn off for me.
