    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

I love this guy. Im young, barely 25. Just finished undergrad in 2019, went right back and finished grad school in 2021. Got a corporate data science job that’s secure, pays 3x more than any job I’ve ever had, and is in a city I love but it’s not me anymore. I want to create. Working on a business idea and learning to write better. Hoping I can start a company and sell it, or at least work enough, to have enough savings to focus on my goals of creating tv shows, especially a culture, history, and travel show.
Reason I mention any of this is that, as a young Black dude, I don’t see or hear about a ton of Black writers. This channel has put me on to quite a few and helped me stay confident that I can do whatever I want to do - just gotta keep my mind right, continue practicing, and work to open as many doors as possible.

I think it's about the relationship between story and characters. There's a saying about space that goes, "Matter tells space how to curve; space tells matter how to move." Same with writing. Characters tell story how to curve; story tells characters how to move. The story and characters serve each other.

    • @PanosSavvidis

IMHO, it's important to fall in love with your scenes. You can always edit down, but it's hard to build up a work if you're not passionate about it.

Not to be meta, but I can *_so_* relate to this. My novel isn't for everyone but, unfortunately, most readers tend not to be able to relate to my MC because of who he is _(an "urban" African American man),_ his situation _(he's trying to solve a copycat case of his own daughter's murder),_ his demeanor _(he's grieving, and always pissed),_ and my writing _(I mix literary with elements of genre with a lot of subtext... it throws a lot of readers)._ However, I am who I am, he is who he is, and this is the world we live in. So, I'm good :^)

I absolutely could not agree with what Joston talks about here more. I just done my first feature as a Writer/Director and there are elements he touches on that were bang on point... WE ARE HERE TO SERVE THE STORY, NOT THE EGO.
As writers/Directors or just simply put storytellers, we have to trust in our ability to be able to serve the story by not believing that everyone else's opinion is best. Sometimes we can get it wrong, but make this mistake on your terms and not make someone else's mistake in your work just to please.
