Love the work. For newbies like me it becomes difficult to separate what’s truly needed and what’s just an irrelevant expense.

Hi. Good idea. Everything you said is true, but does limit your ability to deal with difficult situations. Add age into the mix and a few more concerns appear.
I love camping, but now need a cot as getting off the ground is a real challenge. My wife has knee replacements and can't kneel, so again a cot. Getting dressed in a swag while it is raining is no fun. In fact camping in the rain with a swag is no fun. At least get a quick erect tent so you can cook inside if no alternative. Also you can dress yourself more easily.
I have never seen what people like about swags. You can now get a swag on a cot or a tentcot. If you must use a swag, get a ground sheet under it to protect the swag floor.
You didn't mention lighting. Very important for any sot of camping.
You are obviously talking about camping from a car so allow a few luxuries. The 5 litres of water you should in the back ground is important, etc etc.
Anyway, the right idea, but possibly a more complete suggestion list of acceptable minimal things that could make a simple but comfortable camp site might be appreciated by many new campers. Cheers.

I agree with much of what you've said, and bear in mind that most of my camping is done in a hybrid van with a king bed, hot running water and plenty of interior room to escape the elements. I may well put together something in future on pulling together the ideal first camping setup.

@@ImpalaOverland Any realistic list of the basics would be a good idea for new campers. There is a lot of marketing out there for stuff which is nice, but not really needed in many cases.
Backpacking camping is a whole different ball game.
What we did prior to old age and motorhomes was camping from an old 80 series Landcruiser with a 4 person quick erect tent on a plastic ground sheet. 2 quick erect cots, self inflating mattresses, sleeping bags (as you said, bring your own pillows), a light to hang in the tent, 2 large towels which can double as blankets or under the sleeping bags when in snow country etc, a cheap Bunnings stove, cookware cutlery etc from the Slavos (amazing what you can find at charity shops), plenty of spare gas cartridges, fire starters, to mention a few things. We used to have all the basics packed into a lidded box.
Obviously food and water. Before cheap fridges we used an esky with a layer of dry ice wrapped in a towel on the bottom with things you wanted frozen at the bottom and cheeses etc at the top. Usually worked well for about 3 days so was perfect for Friday night departures and return Sunday night.
In the old days, used to be gas or kerosene pressure lights. Thank goodness for LEDs. What a difference to camp quality they make.
The biggest comfort addition we made to car camping was a quick erect awning. With a Landcruiser, no problem to pack. And there are many that can be bought for around $100 or less. There are some that have 3 sections per leg and will fit in the boot of an average car or smaller SUV. However, most have 2 sections per leg which maybe not be able to be packed in a car. A couple of roof bars is all you need to pop up on the roof. Unlike awnings fitted to many 4x4s these days, quick erect awnings are far more versatile.
The massive benefits of quick erect awnings are the ability to place it over the tent during rain, shelter from the sun, a kind of defined camp area, a covered cooking area, can be placed over existing Park ground fixed table/benches and the biggest advantage in difficult weather, is the ability to pack up you gear under cover on a dry ground sheet. I have converted many people to taking quick erect awnings when camping out of a car.
Anyway, this was how we were kitted for many cheap adventures pre kids and early romance.
      Cheers.
