We really need to get more young people in the car hobby especially per war stuff. One day I want to own a 30s car either Chrysler or packard and share it with as many people as possible let them sit front or back close the door I’d even take them for a ride…

She's a pretty one, especially in red. So many wonderful Art Deco design touches! This car seems to have a lot of accessories on it -- typical for the day, I think.

Yeah I saw this one come in from far away and I couldn’t believe I haven’t seen a 40 Studebaker in the wild I think that they are underrated especially in the design department but the biggest downer is flathead six across-the-board it wasn’t a huge powerhouse of an engine but this is more of a cruising car with that said I wonder if 90 hp could get it to 75,80 miles an hour

3:03 Studebaker offered optional "cathedral" style headlights for the '38 Commander and President lines. Especially sharp-looking, almost like the "Woodlite" accessory headlights from the early thirties.

Studebaker afficionado here. Great video, thank you. One of the three Studebakers I own is a 1941 President so I think the answers to the questions posed are a foregone conclusion, Studebakers all the way. The President is, as you noted, the larger top of the line car. It differs in having a longer wheelbase and uses the 240 ci straight eight, a supremely smooth engine. Keep up the great videos, always looking forward to them.

    38 Studebaker
This one was tough because I really love the 1940 Ford. But I went with the Studebaker because my grandfather loved Studebakers. He always said they were the best car ever made.
That one is really beautiful and that red color and you don't realize how intricate the grill is until you're actually right up there looking at it it's actually quite beautiful when you see it up close. I'd be happy to drive that every day.

I drove a 1940 Champion Coupe while in High school. Great little car and it gave us guys a real boost with the girls in 1941. Dad and Partner were the Studebaker Dealer in Fort Worth Texas (1949-1944). I drove all models when we transferred the new cars from Dallas to Ft Worth. The President was a great auto for its time. Best features in all models was the Climatizer (Heater under front seat}, Overdrive (4 Speed) and the Hill Holder {brakes only released when stopped going uphill when clutch lifted). Also remember the starter was under the clutch! I favor them over any other Brands and wish I had one today!!!.

Starter on my '51 Commander Starlight was under the clutch. Great anti-theft device.
Of course, I now own a 2013 Nissan Frontier and a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek, five-speed and six-speed, respectively.
A friend took her road test in my Subaru when she renewed her license after a long hiatus. The examiner claimed never to have seen a manual, claimed she didn't even know they exist.

The headlight visors, fender markers and curb feelers are aftermarket accessories, think J. C. Whitney.
Notice the reversed position of the door handles and window winders. This is actually a safety feature that persisted until the end of Studebaker car production. If your arm was on the armrest and you grabbed for something in a panic stop, it would be the window winder not the door handle.

The headlights on the '39 that the older brother of my father had didn't look like the '39 in the video. I think the 1940 has seal beams while the '39 had "Mazda" bulbs that fitted into the back of reflectors that were replaceable when burned out.
Amazing how similar the styling was on several of the car brands in that era.

Yeah car companies always share design philosophies with one another the only differences is not every single car looks like every single car back then but there were design elements from shared between cars now it’s like we have one or two different shapes of SUV and they all try to mimic that mold and the colors are just bland

Research on these vehicles is hard. The companies that made them no longer exist with their information destroyed when buildings were sold or bulldozed. Records that might have been saved by employees were never put up on the internet after they passed. I think you provide really good information that does not go off into speculation.

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you so much for seeing that I really try to keep the speculation to a minimum, and sometimes it’s a really hard line it’s really hard to stay away from that depending on the topic.
I was just a bit bummed that there wasn’t as much on this car as the champion and President
The other thing is the information could very well still be out there just not on the Internet there’s a ton of information out there that isn’t on the Internet for whatever reason.
      Google doesn’t know everything..
That actually might be an episode for a future topic things google got wrong.

14:30 There are enough recordings from the period to confirm, the correct pronunciation is _WILLiss._
    That said,
    WYR1: Studebaker Commander.
WYR2: '41 Commander or President Skyway Land Cruiser. You show the Skyway Cruising Sedan, but the Land Cruiser was also available in the Commander and President lines. The Land Cruiser has a smoother overall look and the rear doors on the Land Cruiser are hinged at the "B" post.
It seems that most car makers had very good years in terms of styling.

    1) Commander 2) '40 Thing that gets me about ALL mid 30's to late 40's cars is how much bigger they look as compared to how they really are. They look like behemoths, but if you look at the specs, not really. Has to be the upright styling. And who called you a whiney millenial? Far from it! Dude, the work you put into all these videos, and your obvious love for cars shows! Amazing at how much lighter the '39 or '40 Studebaker is supposed to be compared to the 1950 Pontiac which is more compact in looks. Perhaps the several hundred lb. difference is mostly the weight of the much larger eight cylinder engine in the Pontiac although that can't account for all of it since the Pontiac engine weighed almost 700 lbs. (Packard Straight Eight of the era may have been close to 1000 lbs.) so unless the Stude engine literally weighed nothing the rest of the (Pontiac) had to have been somewhat heavier. I would guess the little Studebaker engine weighed no less than 400 lbs. Also I think Studebaker made an even smaller engine that only displaced 170 or 180 cubic inches.

I believe that the Studebaker Commander was reintroduced in 1938 to replace the then unpopular Dictator Series. It had a very successful run for the South Bend, Indiana company lasting all the way until the end. As for my WYR choices, even though the Commander is an impressive looking vehicle for me it is hard to beat a Willys coupe in 1940-42. But for the second choice I would definitely choose the 1940 Studebaker Commander - although I seriously doubt that I will ever own one!

    • @8176morgan

@@What.its.like. I may have heard the song, but I don't know if I know the name of the band off the top of my head.

40 Studebaker looks a lot like the 40 Ford, but so did the 40 Willys. Have seen both types of headlamps on the 38 Stude, too...and there could have been a number of reasons for having the 2 styles, but I really dislike that particular flaired-in design.

The car the thumbnail very well could be a president I was looking for commander advertisements and since the 39 in the 40 are very similar didn’t have any commander advertisements in for a 1940 so I took this from 1939

Wasn't the President a Commander trim level at the time? Also in 1937 the President was available with an awesome sun roof. @@What.its.like.

I’ve never seen a Willys coupe that was original every single one that I’ve ever seen has been hot rodded in someway, Which really makes me want to find an original one to cover for this channel
