    WHY SIRI SUCKS:
Me: Hey Siri, are you dumb?
Siri: I'm smart enough to know not to answer that question.
Me: No you are not smart.
Siri: *I'm not sure I understand.*

That demo from Google I/O of google assistant verbally communicating over the phone with a human receptionist was just utterly mind blowing and dramatically raised the bar that any future versions of siri need to clear in order to not suck. Why does anything, Apple, now suck? To such a degree that TH-cam actively subverts any videos openly discussing this? Apple builds failure into all of its products, by intentionally soldering important connectors, poorly. They design these products to fail. With their newer unibody designs, it is no longer possible to open these products to add or replace RAM or to do one’s own repairs, as they have removed screws, and parts, all together. They use this “unibody” as a selling point, not sure how, exactly. The people at the Apple Genius Bar are instructed to lie about the nature of a repair, the cost of the repair to ensure that it is prohibitively expensive, or that it simply “can’t be fixed”. It’s not true. They now take your old iPad, before exchanging it with a new one, if you happen to be under warranty. Do not give it to them. Independent repair shops can repair these products, and are actively subverted from doing so, by Apple itself. They are hunted down by Apple, and threatened, on the Apple Support section of their own site, where ordinary people are encouraged to offer suggestions to questions from other ordinary Apple users. I might add that isn’t a coincidence that a number of CEOs running these corporations, and working for these corporations, happen to come from places in the world, that never particularly supported freedom or capitalism in the first place.

Biggest problem for Siri? The loss of Steve Jobs. Had he still been around he would have seen that Siri was given the resources and attention that it sorely needs. Cook and the rest of the Apple Executive staff are competent managers but pathetically lack vision. Jobs would have realized much sooner how important Siri is to Apple’s overall future.

People don't want to set up shortcuts. People don't want to buy products that are supposed to make their life easier but only if you configure it to do such thing.

Ranked in order from best to worst:
    1. Google Assistant / Google Home
    2. Alexa / Amazon Echo (With skills factored in)
    3. Cortana (Smarter than Alexa, but has far fewer skills)
    4. Bixby (Samsung Galaxy)
    5. Siri / HomePod
I use mostly Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant on the Google Home, and the Google Home is definitely far more intelligent. I find it far less frustrating to use as well because of this. So I always default to the Google Home for daily use as much as I can.
And I rank Bixby higher than Siri as well, since it's already far more cable then Siri. Especially after Bixby 2.0 dropped back in September. (Bixby 3.0 is set for a 2019 release.) It can control far more things on your phone then Siri can. Plus starting in 2019, it will integrate far more into other Samsung product lines creating a larger ecosystem.
In addition to that, Bixby was designed from the ground up to be the direct replacement to Siri. The core underlying technology is superior and Apple decided for whatever reason, to not acquire it. So Samsung did! Again this goes back to the bad management issue mentioned in the video. Siri wasn't designed to be upgradable like the Google Assistant is, or Alexa, or Bixby and even Cortana according to the creators of Siri. So Apple has to upgrade Siri, even though it's not really meant to be upgraded. And because of this, it takes much longer to get upgrades pushed out.
Unless Apple starts from scratch like Samsung did by acquiring VIV, (Later renamed Bixby) Apple will remain far behind. And we can see how long it's taking Samsung to get Bixby fully off the ground. But at the same time, it's already surpassed Siri in its early stage. And even if Apple starts now, Samsung and the rest of the competition have a several year head start as it stands now, let alone in the future.

Here's the problem (and yes, I am slightly triggered here). The vast majority of people seem to completely misunderstand the purpose of a virtual assistant. You can watch literally ANY journalistic test/review of a virtual assistant and they are all the same. Each one of them tests them like a search engine/general knowledge tool. This is NOT what a virtual assistant is meant to be. Of course Google Assistant is gonna come out ahead here because it IS Google. A virtual assistant's purpose is to assist you with day to day tasks and help you access features on your phone.
For example, a very simplistic example, if I decide to take a brief nap during the day I can ask "Hey Siri, turn on Do Not Disturb please" and Siri will immediately activate the feature without me even having do touch the device. This is a virtual assistant immediately doing it's job correctly. Now, I don't have an overly busy lifestyle at the moment so don't use Siri heavily. However, any basic tasks I have requested of it have been successfully performed. The new advent of Siri shortcuts will increase this power and scope.
Bottom line, show me a LEGITIMATE test of the virtual assistants doing what they're SUPPOSED to be doing and maybe I'll change my view point.

@@davego290 That video's even more ridiculous than the general knowledge crap. Why "swipe left/right" bs when you could just do it yourself if you're looking at the screen. If the guy had half a brain he could have literally asked Siri to launch ANY app on his phone and it would have done so. There's no need to "swipe" if you're not navigating your phone.
The screenshot one is because Siri takes up the entire screen, but again, why would you ever want to ask Siri to take a screenshot if you're not actually LOOKING at your phone and once again if you're looking at your phone you can take the screenshot yourself.
At first I thought you might have had the right idea but you also don't seem to get it and further prove my point that people just don't understand virtual assistants.

Although Apple is a trillion dollar company (well it was a few weeks ago).... Apple spends too much money on the hardware side of the equation and not the underlying software. IOS is the problem. Instead of worrying about adding colors to the iPhone.... how about fixing the software? Now they add Siri shortcuts...and it just sucks! Only reason I'm with iPhones for my family is because of Apple's stance on privacy...and that is the tip of the spear on why Siri and IOS is still shitty from an end user perspective. If they could only find a way to maintain privacy and provide a better and smarter assistant? I'm sure they could figure it out if they spent the resources in this area instead of millions naming shitty colors on their phones. Today's iPhones are not worth the money they are asking.... I doubt I will buy anymore iPhones for my family again until Apple gets their heads out of their asses.

Every language has its own structure, so, from this point, Apple had to almost recreate Siri for every new language and every new Siri’s advancement had to be adopted for every syntax.

You made an excellent point about the privacy stance at Apple. Advanced AI is impossible without massive amounts of data, like Google's Inception which is trained in part on data generated by users clicking through captchas. Unless Apple can find ways to generate similar amounts of data (which should be doable considering the size of their installed base), Siri will continue to suck.

After my experience with Google Voice Assistent I'm highly surprised that they came up as #1. ... which for me is the conclussion that voice assistants still suck in early 2019. You just have to correct them all too often in what they do. It feels pointless.

Apple have always been great at products but hit and miss at best with services. Even Apple Music sucks compared to Spotify. And obviously a great voice assistant requires the ability to do more with data, and even better as Google has figured out - a search engine and the ability to at least attempt to look up anything. It's just astounding to me Apple hasn't figured out a better way, I think its possible to anonymise user data so its unidentifiable and isn't being studied outside of Apple and provide much better accuracy and results. They have seriously dropped the ball on this one, and what sucks is the original Siri pre Apple was better than it is today, and they had that huge headstart. I mean when Cortana is doing better you know you should look inward.

Lovely video. Commenters can't have it both ways - so Siri is perfectly fine for performing simple and day to day tasks? Could argue Windows is fine for computing, Android is a fine OS, Samsung makes fine phones, Spotify is a fine music streaming app, Alexa Echo is a fine smart speaker, Fitbit make fine wearables and yet we would still have someone say Apple's version is better and herein lies the argument.
If you're simply looking for a assistant that does what it needs to do most of the time, that was never contested in the first place... Siri has always been a functional assistant. Is it however able to go above what people expect from an assistant? Do it's competitors achieve that expectation? That right there is what I feel the crux of this video is about.

  • @RandomCoffee101

Sadly, almost all of the voice assistants work well only for English. For example, Google's Assistant Russian is still in beta (and Siri has a MUCH nicer voice than Google Assistant's Russian). Cortana and Alexa don't know Russian. Russian is like in top 5 or top 6 languages in the world by the number of speakers btw. So Siri is miles ahead of other AIs when it comes to languages that are not English.

    • @heyitsmejm4792
      @heyitsmejm4792 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

thats understandable, you cant just translate the AI's responses word per word by any language, try google translating an english sentence to japanese and translate it back to english and see how broken the sentence now is.. every language has a distinct terminologies. in short, the AI has to learn all over again when you want it to speak a different language, thus it needs a beta release so that people that speak that native language can correct the AI if its doing the wrong thing rather than coding each command people asks it to do. AI is dynamic and has to self learn rather than coding it what specifically it needs to respond on a specific question(it would take decades to do that).

Eh, seems like a bunch of excuses. The finger pointing from Apple employees doesn’t matter. They hired Google’s AI engineer as you mentioned years ago and he still hasn’t shown any results. Siri isn’t the same animal on iPhone as HomePod and Apple TV. She/He is much dumber in HomePod than iPhone.
I don’t buy the whole privacy excuse either. Basic things like knowing “light” vs “lights” doesn’t require much. Heck as someone hard of hearing I perfected being able to hear the “s” when I was 8 years old. I also have “Share Audio Recordings” turned on to help Apple improve Siri. Haven’t noticed anything in the past few years.

The difference is did they sell it? Make it public(anonymous or not)?
I do believe apple is collecting user data but they kept it more private(but not all I'm not ios user but they have ads isn't it? So they maybe sell some user data on the targeting ads i believe) compared to google or facebook user.

Ummmm.... Nah, Apple got itself so fucked up that not even iOS13 is going to save them now.
I mean c'mon, we're nearly in 2019 and people are still choosing on buying the iPhone 8/8 Plus over the X/XS line/XR...
Apple pricing rises got many of its costumers either staying with their current iPhones, upgrading to the iPhone 8/8 Plus if they can even find a store that still sells them or switch to android altogether..
I've personally had seen many coworkers and friends switching to android phones (especially to the likes of Xiaomi phones and Samsung's A series of phones) than upgrading to a new iPhone.
Most say they hate the new gesture control and prefer the old home button layout (the ones wanting to buy the iPhone 8/8 Plus)
Or they just cant justify paying double the cost on an iPhone XS.
Most of them have iPhone 6 or 7...
The XS starting price is more than double of what the iPhone 6 was...

I mean, I just don’t like saying it all out loud. I’m more of a silent tech user. I don’t want to announce my google searches to anyone in the adjacent rooms, because half time I word it wrong (even real people have trouble understanding me sometimes) and I have to say it three times to get it right. Plus, Siri takes so long and often doesn’t get the info I want (what’s with only going to Wikipedia? And if there’s no Wikipedia, there no results) that I would rather just type it in safari. It’s faster, I’ll probably figure out what I actually want to know, and the whole house doesn’t know it too.
Edit: forgot to add this- I would prefer the concept of Siri in text format. Like an app where you pick a category, type in your question, and you get a typed answer back.

I avoid using Siri whenever I can. But, I DO use voice-to-text multiple times every day. I, perhaps incorrectly, have always connected voice-to-text to Siri, assuming the software was related. I'm always blown away when I speak via voice-to-text, and it gets most of it correct on-the-fly. However, when I stop voice-to-text, the letters are erased, as if I was pressing delete, then rewrites it horrible wrong. Between laptops and smart phones being over priced and lacking basic hardwired interfaces (headphone jack???), after 30+ years of using Apple products, even touting the advantages to family and friends, I'm done. Its very sad. But I knew, and told anyone who'd listen, when Steve Jobs passed away... Apple would start to veer off course. Just didn't think it would happen so quickly.
