One of the most underrated musical band because their music is quite niche. I would suggest to checkout their other albums too. They are few in number but each one's a gem!! Especially if you're a music lover. Albums coming to my head right now are kandisa, black friday and tandanu. Indian ocean lovers, upvote this to get them introduced fully to the band!!!
Kandisa, Desert Rain, Jhini, Tandanu.....are my favorites......You must listen to album Kandisa.....every song is unique and can take you to whole new world even today.
Well not underrated at all if someone follows actual indian bands, it is on everyone's top list. But overall independent bands n artists are underrated, n most don't even know about them. Bollywood songs n movies just are in the limelight, with their big production money etc.

The subs tried their best, but this song is just untranslatable! "Kudrat" is not fate. And "kudrat has padegi" is such a powerful statement. Gives me goosebumps every single time.

But I agree, "kudrat" is untranslatable. Technically, it's nature, but it's so much more immense, like cosmos or something.

indian ocean is one of the oldest yet most underrated band of india. They're the real OG of all time, deserved more respect and appreciation from us.

The original version of this song with the original lineup including Sushmit Sen and the Late Asheem Chakravarty was incomparable. The new lineup is just not as great. They have another brilliant song "Kandisa" which is actually an old Aramaic prayer put to song by Indian Ocean.
P. S. - The guy you titled India's Willie Nelson, is Rahul Ram, and he's a musician and activist. He has been Indian Ocean's bassist and singer from the beginning. He's also part of a Musical comedy side project called Aisi Taisi Democracy which is also fantastic.

The guitar lead was originally played and composed by the great Sushmit Sen. He has a unique style of blending Western rock with indian classical. He, Asheem Chakraborty & Rahul Ram was indeed the" Indian Ocean" we have grown up watching and nostalgia of '90s kids.. Check out "Kandisa" & "Bondhu" by them.
They are from St.Xaviers School Delhi, my school.

Correction Sir .....But the first Indian Rock band was "Mohiner Ghnoraguli"(The Seahorses)which was a 70s or 80s band from West Bengal . Try listening to their songs too , they're also gem of creations

There are two famous rock bands from 90's which are still alive and kicking in India are Indian Ocean and Parikrama. Indian ocean sings in Hindi and Parikrama in English.
In 2012, when Megadeath and Indian ocean were performing in Delhi at the same venue and at the same time, Rahul Ram couldn't believe the crowd gathered for Indian Ocean's gig and almost got teary that people could have gone Megadeath's stage as it was once in a lifetime opportunity but they came to their show.
Inquisitive question from me. If it was at the same venue and at the same time then were they collaborating? If not then how would you know how many came for Megadeth or Indian Ocean?
@@aarondsouza8235 actually it was NH7 weekender. Maybe you know that in that event many stages are there and artists perform simultaneously on different stages. So, Megadeath was performing on a different stage and Indian Ocean on another at the same time.

They performed twice in my college fest (2013 and 2017). 1st time with acoustic guitarist Susmit Sen in their group! One of the best live performances ever! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 These guys are great! They composed the score of ‘Masaan ‘. This is not the best version of the song. Listen to the original. Also, They’re the nicest people off stage. During my college fest they literally chatted with us (students) for sometime and bought us ‘chai’ from canteen and also had tea and snacks with us. Amazing people. 😍😍😍

this style of guitar was first developed by Susmit Sen, the previous guitarist of this band. he quit the band a few years ago. Him and Asim Chakravarty created the band. Ashim And Susmit had a different sound altogether and the band at that time was a class apart. you gotta check out their early tracks like Ma rewa, Jhini, Bondhu, Desert Rain, Kandisa, Bhor and many others.

I had the privilege of watching Indian Ocean perform live 15 years back. I still remember the goosebumps their performance gave me.. They had a percussionist Asheem Chakravarty who had such a powerful voice.. heard he passed away a couple of years back..
This song was later used in the background of Black Friday - yeap the Anurag Kashyap one.

Rick was so spot on about the guitarist being able to blend western and Indian... If I'm not mistaken, the notes he played were very close to Raag Bhairavi, which is also what the second vocal lead sang with his aalaaps.

This the world class indian band since so long, the original guitarist have left the band now. I love the sound of this band, so connected to indian mysticism and roots, its mesmerizing. Rest assured the more you dig in the band the more you will love them. Also the lyrics...oh my god...powerful.

Glad you're getting introduced to Indian Ocean. "Willy Nelson" is Rahul Ram and the drummer is the talented Amit Kilam. They often tour in the U.S. doing fundraising concerts for this great charity (that I am glad to be a part of.). Glad you caught the folk notes. Check out more of them. They've been going east-weat blend (to be reductive about it) for a while. Check out Jhinni and Bhor - some of their other gems. Just get all of their stuff already!
I have been to Indian Ocean Live Concerts at 5 different venues across India. Just love them.

Indian Ocean came out during our school days and I remember it was actually just word of mouth! They had released their album called "Kandisa" and we were falling over each other to obtain that CD! It was one of the hottest selling Indie rock band

I watched Indian Ocean live at a college rock fest concert in 2003 or 2004 ( It was some time just before Black Friday released). None of us had heard of them or heard their music before. They sang some songs and we were like okay, but where is my LedZep and Black Sabbath. At one point, they asked for requests. Ignorant crowd that we were, the gathered students shouted out what was essentially picks from the "Top Rock Songs of the 20th Century." "We don't do covers" came the response - every time. Some started booing.
Then they sang this song. I have never ever felt a crowd of over 500 rowdy 18-20 year olds fall silent so fast. They followed that up with Kandisa.
Next day, everyone was scouring the local music shops asking for their tapes/CDs. One guy in our college had Kandisa on a mini-disc (I wonder if anyone remembers them...). That tiny little player had probably never seen so much action ever. xD
Their original singer died of a heart attack a few years back. listen to some songs of his! mesmerizing

The bearded guy on the bass is Dr Rahul Ram, a leading environmental activist and a major leader in the Narmada Bachao Andolan. He is alumnus from Cornell and IIT Kanpur. Also, he is a very polite man, got an opportunity to talk to him in my college days at IIT.
