  • For the last few months, I (Jia) have been traveling the world as a digital nomad. To make this dream a reality, I have a combination of private ESL and Spanish tutoring clients, as well as a full-time job with one of the best ESL companies.

I did what you’re doing a few years back (English Degree), I’m currently stateside and pursuing my Master’s in Education. Things tanked in 2020 and I had to stop. Thank you for your realistic perspective on what things are currently like. Cheers.

I am an American interested in tutoring Spanish for Americans. How many semesters of college Spanish have you completed?

I completed a degree in Spanish and ESL teaching, so I did 8 semesters in total during university, supplemented by TONS of self study and a few months in Colombia! - Jia

Great video - exactly what I was looking for. I am a fully qualified UK teacher (English Lit) with seven plus years of experience. I'm based at an international school in Central America. I want to explore remote teaching options, but I had the same initial experience that you mentioned. I actually know Apollo well, my first ever post-CELTA ESL teaching position was at their Hanoi school way back 2004. I'll keep following to look for ideas as I work out the best path forward for my family and I .

I'm preparing to teach ESL and have been using the tandem language exchange app for the past month to develop interpersonal and tutoring skills. I've had a bunch of people approach me looking for a English teacher and are ready to jump on board as paying students.

I recommend just diving in and getting a job in a different country (like China, Vietnam, or any other country you might be interested in). Don't pay any attention to thoughts like "such a school would hire anyone that's white and has a pulse" or "ESL isn't a real job" or whatever. You will actually get experience teaching and being in a foreign country. I taught ESL in South Korea and China for the past 20+ years. I don't regret that decision. I don't know if I would want to do it online as it wouldn't give me the same experience, and the pay wouldn't be any better than working at McDonalds.

Thanks for making this, I'm checking out the list now. I've been on a platform fulltime the last year and I've really enjoyed it but now I need to mix it up because when I am not excited about my life forcing myself to talk to people is the worst thing I can do. I lived it Ecuador last year but now I am in Colombia :)

Yes, absolutely. That's what Jia does now. Being a native speaker will help you as well.
