  • Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, explains the importance of aiming at maximum speed during complex parts of the kata to impress judges and spectators in competitions. Using the body rotation in Suparimpei as example, he says that playing safe to maintain balance is not the best attitude, because it makes the performance "boring". Mistakes are acceptable, as they can be made up for in subsequent sections of the kata and can be addressed over time with additional training. Competitors should avoid negative thoughts focused on preventing mistakes: instead, they should always have a positive mindset and aim at impressing judges and spectators by showcasing their top speed.

I recorded this video during Soke Inoue's seminar held in Caorle (Venice, Italy) on 18-20 October 2013. The seminar was organized by Sensei Francesco Favaron, founder of Inoue-Ha Shito-Ryu Italy:

Wow... I had never heard "no negative only positive" in this context before. I never even realized it existed in every one of my kata performances (No faults, balance, stability... never thought these very ideas could be holding me down). There's such brilliance in his simple words... Let's go!

I love watching videos of Inoue Sensei. Oh how I wish I had of trained just once with him.
Actually this advice he is giving is similar to advice given by Naka Sensei (JKA). He also spoke of people who constantly try & stay balanced during movement, deprive themselves of the chance to be dynamic. And, if we think about Shotokan kata, the first movement of Bassai Dai (if done the old way), actually deliberately requires an 'off balance' movement.
I think both Sensei were singing from the same music sheet. ;-)
