    Text: John Cennick | Tune: HELMSLEY
    Lo! He comes with clouds descending,
    Once for favoured sinners slain:
    Thousand thousand saints attending
    Swell the triumph of His train:
    Hallelujah!
    Jesus now shall ever reign.
    Every eye shall now behold Him
    Robed in awesome majesty;
    Those who set at nought and sold Him,
    Pierced, and nailed Him to the tree,
    Deeply wailing,
    Shall the true Messiah see.
    Now redemption, long expected,
    See in solemn pomp appear:
    All His saints, by man rejected,
    Now shall meet Him in the air:
    Hallelujah!
    See the Day of God appear!
    Every island, sea, and mountain,
    Heaven and earth, shall flee away;
    All who hate Him must, confounded,
    Hear the trump proclaim the Day:
    Come to judgement!
    Come to judgement! come away!
    Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
    High on Thine eternal throne:
    Saviour, take the power and glory,
    Claim the kingdom for Thine own:
    O, come quickly,
    Everlasting God, come down!

    I grew up in Bangalore and went to Bishop Cottons Boys School and my parents took me every Sunday to an Anglican Church St Marks Cathedral but never paid much attention to the songs
    45 years later in the US this tune came into my mind and then I rediscovered this hymn. I never appreciated the significance of these amazing verses.I am emotionally touched because I can never go back to the childhood with my parents but Praise the Lord for His Promises!✌️🛐

    This is true Biblical worship. This God centered Christ exalting Hymn was sung in the same church that Charles H. Spurgeon once pastored, the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. Like our home church today, it’s ‘statement of faith’ was fully confessional, more specifically the London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689. Though I will never boast about our local church (as we should only boast in the Lord), but am thankful we too are fully confessional, and sing hymns like this, rather than today’s modern day praise teams that entertain itchy ears, while worshipping the false deity of me, myself, and I.

      I like both modern and traditional worship. I don't think either one is better than the other. People just have different personal preferences. Worship music never stays the same for more than a few centuries. I have heard what hymns from the 18th and early 19th centuries sounded like, and they quite different from this one. Look up Maddy Prior on YT and you'll find out. I have noticed that many hymns have borrowed melodies from secular songs, such as Be Still My Soul, Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, and Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken. And similarly the Star Spangled borrowed its melody from a drinking song.

      I like modern songs too, but a wise old pastor pointed out that the Wesley, Watts, Cowper variety all use Biblical text in their lyrics.
      It matters little where the tune, or ayr originates, it's the lyrics that are important.

    I love this old hymn because it is full of biblical truth. On the one hand the redeemed are joyfully anticipating the return of Jesus Christ but on the other hand, lost sinners are being warned, "COME TO JUDGEMENT! COME AWAY!"

    This hymn is so appropriate for the time in which we live. Though man is attempting to formulate a one world government we know that there is only one who is forever on his throne, the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, he who is King of kings and Lord of lords. May those that love the Lord, even though these seem uncertain times, be ever led and strengthened with the assurance that underneath are the everlasting arms and that God's mercy endures forever.

    This hymn was truly a team effort. The original version was penned by John Cennick, a land surveyor from Reading, England, who became a Moravian preacher. Hymnwriter Charles Wesley adapted the Cennick version, and then it was finished by two of Wesley's followers. One of them was Thomas Olivers who had been a London Cobbler; the other was Martin Madan, who loved to embellish Wesley's hymns and probably added the hallelujahs.
    As we await the coming of our Lord, about which this hymn is written, God's kingdom continues to grow just as this hymn once grew. Preacher, cobblers, land surveyors, and those who embellish with hallelujahs build on one another's efforts for the glory of God. they are just a few of the "thousand, thousand saints attendiing."
    Peace Be to Their Memory! They left the Christian world a lot of legacy to celebrate our risen Savior!
    Blessings to All!

    I love the traditional hymns like this. I like some of the current music but nothing lifts me like these old hymns that truly celebrates God's holiness. These hymn writers were true followers who put their faith in these words. I miss hearing these in church now. I like hearing an organ in service or all a capella...if you turn off the electronics you'll find people are not really singing.

    Agree, Christina Burke. I cannot think of a single hymn tune written in the last 75 years which is uplifting. It must be that the talents of those who would compose for the Church have been seduced by the great secularization of the age and the ubiquitous trashing of music. I am so thankful that my church sticks with the classical compositons and simply refuses to sing the modern junk panderings. Which means I only get to hear the best. That is one of the great advantages of being Eastern Orthodox... :-)

    Therefore if He cometh in the clouds and saints meet Him in the air, then why the general assumption by all Christian churches that when a man dies, they go to heaven. A most insidious lie for since the beginning of sin- God declared that a soul that sinneth- it shall die. - The bible says death-= sleep until He cometh again for the 2nd time to take His saints- living and those buried, nevermore to be separated again. Praise HIM- hallelujah.

    Revelation 5
    11. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
    12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
    13. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
    Revelation 1
    7. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
    Zechariah 12
    10. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. 17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly.
