You’re so right that this song was another great example of John’s genius - to crystallize the basic elements of musical beauty and marry them so perfectly to such rich sentimental purity. Still as great today as the first time I heard it in 1965. And reminds me that John learned to play ukulele before he could afford a guitar - hence his mastery of chord and melody. A four stringed instrument shows you the secrets of voicing. A six stringed instrument over-complicates it.
In 1965 as a 13-year-old falling in love with Rubber Soul, I knew exactly what John meant when he sang “I get high when I see you go by, my oh my”. In the 19th Century, this “high” would be call a swoon, no? Her essence, her face, her walk…my oh my. I’ve always loved this song and always played it wrong until today. Thanks, Mike.

I always liked that particular Beatles song. Beautiful chord arrangement. Not 'high brow', but a well produced contemporary Pop song. With his later distain of the song, John musta been having an off day. His chord and rhythm playing is excellent. His later Criticism doesn't stand up: from a "Pop" music perspective, I think it's one of their best. 😘😘

listened to this album and this song on my RCA mono hi fi in my teen years. It is one of my faves. Lately my mind has drummed up this tune in my head on a seemingly endless reel so I looked up the tune for a lesson. Glad I discovered Mike's greta breakdown of the song. Yes,.a great job by Mike! It reminds me of in the mid nineties I acquired a Apple tower computer and Digital Performer recording software. I also had an Alesis electronic drum set. With my guitar playing friend we played a lot of Beatles. We would first import a Beatles song from a CD. Then we would add all the instrument parts and finally add vocals. We would cut out The Beatles and what was left was just Hans and I. It was fun and a great learning experience. It was also.a great way to really dig into the Beatles and understand their music and recording techniques.

Great job Mike. I have played this song with just 2 guitars all my life . I LOVE this song . After the Beatles split John really always down graded their songs . I have no idea why. Got on Paul about his silly love songs. Then half of his Solo albums were Love songs to Yoko . John was at his peak in the 1963-1967 era as a outstanding songwriter . After that not so much. You Mike are the best guy on you tube on Beatle songs. And your solo stuff with Phil Keaggy is amazing.

couple of days ago when you did the live on TH-cam, youve been asked what is the next beatles song lesson, you play the start and told us to guess, I was the first one to guess because its is on of my favorite songs and one of the most underrated songs of the beatles, great lesson keep it up.
Great video as always. I thought I might point out that if a J-160E was used on this song, it wasn't John's. It had to be George's. John's J-160E was accidentally left behind by Mal Evans at the Finsbury Park Astoria Theatre in December 1963, probably after the final gig on New Years Eve. It disappeared until 2014 when John McCaw of San Diego CA realized he owned it, having bought it at a music store there in 1969. It set the record for the highest price for a guitar ever. After losing his, I'm sure John would regularly play George's when needed.

That was the one album I thought Capitol got right when they messed with the English version. Turned it into a folk rock album, and a great one. The songs fit together better than the English version. I loved the extreme stereo on the album, and "I'm Looking Through You" always sounds wrong without the double false start and backward noise. On the US album version, Paul's bass is nothing fancy, which fits with the folk rock style, so on most of the songs it has a thump thump sound instead of the strong sound such as "Rain". In fact, if I were the producer on your song here, I would bring up the bass some. You played it correctly, but I would bring it out a little more.
They were simply musical geniuses! And ine strategy seend to be sparseness and modesty as far as each instrument/player is concerned and creating an overwhelming wholeness together.
The melody in "...Mr Kite" as a variation of sorts of "It's Only Love" True. Great observation. About Lennon's poor opinion of the song: Maybe not his greatest effort. Then again, Some chord changes in it are great, especially the one going from Dsus2 to Daug. Surely it's one of the loveliest changes in any love song in the annals of rock, imo.

Funny how my interest in playing guitar started with the Beatles and and after all these years I always seem to circle back to them. So nice an analysis! Especially the indication on the common sequence with Mr Kite, it never occurred to me. Because it sounds so absolutely differently in this song. Lyrics may be conventional unrequited love angst but the chord progression and melody are so lovely it’s irresistible. Fantastic always loved it. Amazing that Lead line , I never knew it was two electrics mixed , I thought it was George with a Leslie or heavy vibrato effect or something! Fantastic analysis, I wonder what Paul’s writing contribution was?.

John wrote edgy, acid philosophical songs after the Beatles and would have thought this a soppy love song not suitable for the 70s. It is one of my favourite Beatles tunes. Just love it: "But it's so hard loving you". How man of us have felt that emotion?

According to Peter Asher (Peter and Gordon group) George, John, and Paul didn't learn music theory or read music. These guys came out with the best 60s music that is truly a classic today and probably young musicians listened to. Exceptional lesson and the chord showing on screen is helpful. Enjoyed watching.

Like one of your other responders, I'm drawn back to the early songs and also to the longevity of them. We still enjoy songs over 50 years old, if you go back to my early childhood, this would be equivalent to songs from the 1910s still being popular which they weren't. Maybe the Beatles legacy will last forever.
65' I was 7. My aunt Eileen gave me my first Beatles album. She was in high school at the time . Ha! Man, you have that vocal range! I'm a baritone...... Oh nice,. You have an Olson ! Nice cover. I played Eight days a week and " And I love her". In the 70's. Still great to play.
If you listen to ‘You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away’, almost all of the lyrics rhyme in that song too, so I think John was overly critical about this tune. I think it stands up with his other great acoustic ballads of that period, such as ‘In My Life’.
My grass is never gonna get cut. I had youtube on just nothing in particular. You came on with your stream of Please Please me album, Howto's. Well, had this Lava guitar lying on the couch. So I started learning "Its only Love", that led to another..and another..two hours later...Im walking down memory lane. Couldnt help myself. Somewhere in your monologue, You said "4 young Geniuses" I burst out laughing. So true. I met a young girl the other day who told me.."Oh I think they were overrated" I dont hit women. I just said "You dont play guitar do you?" I have never met a guitarist who would ever say that. The grass can wait.
Well, that was interesting. I jam with a buddy and was playing the rhythm part starting on the Open C. So much more difficult to play most of the chords than with using the capo the way you did. Thanks, Mike!

So nice an analysis! Especially the indication on the common sequence with Mr Kite, it never occurred to me. Because it sounds so absolutely differently in this song.

Lyrics may be conventional unrequited love angst but the chord progression and melody are so lovely it’s irresistible. Fantastic always loved it. Amazing that Lead line , I never knew it was two electrics mixed , I thought it was George with a Leslie or heavy vibrato effect or something! Fantastic analysis, I wonder what Paul’s writing contribution was?.

John was known to be highly self critical. Can't agree with him on this song!! This period he wrote very beautiful like this effortlessly!! Thanks for explaining that beautiful 'blend' of electric and acoustic beginning that sends me over the moon when the song starts!!
John wrote edgy, acid philosophical songs after the Beatles and would have thought this a soppy love song not suitable for the 70s. It is one of my favourite Beatles tunes. Just love it: "But it's so hard loving you". How man of us have felt that emotion?

According to Peter Asher (Peter and Gordon group) George, John, and Paul didn't learn music theory or read music. These guys came out with the best 60s music that is truly a classic today and probably young musicians listened to. Exceptional lesson and the chord showing on screen is helpful. Enjoyed watching.

Like one of your other responders, I'm drawn back to the early songs and also to the longevity of them. We still enjoy songs over 50 years old, if you go back to my early childhood, this would be equivalent to songs from the 1910s still being popular which they weren't. Maybe the Beatles legacy will last forever.
65' I was 7. My aunt Eileen gave me my first Beatles album. She was in high school at the time

Love this song since my childhood days.
If you listen to ‘You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away’, almost all of the lyrics rhyme in that song too, so I think John was overly critical about this tune. I think it stands up with his other great acoustic ballads of that period, such as ‘In My Life’.
Never knew John hated this song. I've always loved it, and finally can come close to playing it, thanks to you. Liked and subscribed to your channel!

My grass is never gonna get cut. I had youtube on just nothing in particular. You came on with your stream of Please Please me album, Howto's. Well, had this Lava guitar lying on the couch. So I started learning "Its only Love", that led to another..and another..two hours later...Im walking down memory lane. Couldnt help myself. Somewhere in your monologue, You said "4 young Geniuses" I burst out laughing. So true. I met a young girl the other day who told me.."Oh I think they were overrated" I dont hit women. I just said "You dont play guitar do you?" I have never met a guitarist who would ever say that. The grass can wait.
Well, that was interesting. I jam with a buddy and was playing the rhythm part starting on the Open C. So much more difficult to play most of the chords than with using the capo the way you did. Thanks, Mike!
