As a Melbournian, I have used the 901 bus many times. But do not forget to buy a MYKI public transport card at the airport. Just ask someone who looks official for directions. Unfortunately it is $6 for the card plus add $10 to the card for your bus/train fare. This bus route provides a great tour of metropolitan Melbourne, visiting all main shopping centres and train stations that centre out from the city.
This service is rarely used by the general public to get to the airport and I have never experienced it being jam packed full.
For a real adventure, take the 4 hour trip to Frankston, then train to the city. Great trip for people watching!

After being nickled and dimed by the airlines for checked baggage, inflight food and seat allocation, saving some money once you hit planet earth again is a nice feeling.
Especially as I'd still have to use my Myki Card to get home once I reach Southern Cross.
Thank you so much for the tip-off!

Tip, I heard the airport have myki cards at T2, T3 and T4. But if you have an android, you can use mobile myki. But in the future this will be fixed if you plan to visit melbourne next year. Also all these machines are full fare cards so if you have a concession eligibity, you have to go a staffed area

The reason why the PTV app insists on using the skybus is because it is almost two times faster than this method - the skybus takes about 45 minutes wait time included and this method would take about an hour and a quarter.

Take the skybus. If you can't afford $20, you won't survive a day in Melbourne. And how much was your airfare? And how much is your accommodation? And how much do you think a beer for you and your mate costs? Don't be a scab, front up with your twenty bucks. You'll probably want to travel by public transport during your stay. A myki card will cost you $6. Good luck finding a place other than a large train station to buy one. Then you top it up as you need. If you haven't upgraded to iPhone and you're still using an android, you can download an app that will save you the $6. Always tap off on trains and busses, never tap off on trams. Happy Holidays!
