Ray, you're doing a phenomenal job on the crochet shawl! I'd consider that an intermediate level pattern, especially when you're trying to follow written instructions (charts are almost always preferred), and you're killing it!

Ray, put a locking stitch marker in your live crochet loop to prevent pulling out stitches when you put your project away. I learned to crochet decades before learning to knit. Crochet charts made more sense because the symbol always means the same stitch, unlike knitting where symbols can change depending on which side of the work you are on.

Attended Maryland Sheep and Wool last weekend and stopped by the Going Gnome booth. While I was in line waiting to make my purchase, I said to my friend, "I blame Ray." Weaving in ends in crochet is much easier than in knitting, in my eyes 😊 I have a granny stitch garment obsession right now too and have that sweater on the radar. I may join you in making it, even if I don’t make it to Flock.

You 💯 should make the jethro crochet cardigan!!! My husband and I watch equalizer and Harry is constantly wearing amazing crochet and knit garments. He wore a cardigan similar to the jethro you showed today but with smaller squares that I am making for my husband as we speak.

I crochet a lot of shawls. That color way sings with this pattern
Flock will be indoors at the Convention Center this year, and we in Seattle over-air condition our indoor spaces. The Jethro cardigan will be beautiful and useful for Flock and many restaurants. (Last year's Flock took place in a former airplane hanger with both ends open.) I loved the episode and seeing all of your in-progress makes and Kevin's beautiful colorways.

Great WIPs! I too find my crochet gauge changes with different brands of hooks. I try to use the same hook throughout a crochet project. I use Lion Brand Mandala frequently and haven’t noticed it sticking to my hooks or needles. It may be because I’m used to using acrylic yarn, or it may be because I use wooden hooks and needles which are probably stickier anyway. 😊

Ray is a much better crocheter, I finally did my first granny square, it came out pretty well.
@@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast Cool, well done on your first granny square. I think that's what I will start with. I love how creative you can be with colour in granny squares and use up all your scrap yarn to one day have a beautiful blanket.
My jelly roll is taller than me (I’m 5’5” tall). I’m on the 3rd strip. Very addictive and potato chippy….i will neglect other projects to keep going! What a great idea for W&N striped yarn!

OMG after watching this I HAD to order my Jethro Cardigan Kit from Frankie Grey Fibers. I don’t know how to crochet but the designer has a TH-cam video that shows you step by step. I reached out to her and she said granny squares are easy. I can’t afford to go to Flock but I’ll still sport my cardigan at DFW Fiber Fest.

I’m sitting here watching your podcast while I’m working on my Jethro Cardigan! I also saw it on the Grocery Girls. I love that it’s both knit and crochet. I’m also thinking of adding an extra row of granny squares to mine too. I highly recommend this cardigan. The pattern is so well written! I made the 14 color shawl so I had a lot of yarn left over so I’m using that for my granny squares. I just needed to buy the main color. I’m using Woolstok Light held double. Love it!

I've knitted and crochet toys for 36 years. The more wonky the more the child loves the toy... I never worry if I don't get it right as per the pattern every time. Working in the round can be a little confusing......Great work Kevin.

I started the Rachy Newin pattern awhile back & it has been living in my UFO pile too long. I decided that this year (hopefully this summer) it is time to pick it up & finish it. I am using a cotton gradient cake for mine. I love crochet charts - my preferred method. A number of my viewers asked about charts so I did a 3 part tutorial series on how to read a crochet chart. It really isn’t hard as I think you discovered.
Agreed! At first the charts were so confusing but now, OMG a GAME changer!! Makes things just sooooo much easier 😁
Yes! Crochet helps me close my ‘move’ ring very early in the day as opposed to just a knitting day! 🤩
I don’t get an exercise time in when knitting, very interesting that it only happens with crochet.
Those fingering weight blankets are hero’s work. Intimidated
the best patterns have both words and charts.... Learning how to read a chart opens up the whole world of patterns, even those in other languages other than English. I always get excited when my students start to use charts. Your shawl looks great.

I'm retired now (5 years 😳), I miss it, but I don't miss it.
I've been bistitchual since I was about 5-6 yrs old, I STILL can't crochet & watch TV... knitting?? Piece of cake!! I'm doing the Romi Hill MKAL & not missing a stitch (even when watching OnPatrol:Live 😉).
I've also noticed that I have more hand & wrist pain crocheting than knitting. 🤷🏻♀️
I remember taking my scale with me on a vacation (because I am the yarn chicken Queen!! It helps!), one of the friends I was staying with asked in all seriousness why I had a drug scale!! Can you guess what line of work he used to be in!?

Love your bears. If you are at all interested in charity knitting (or your followers are) there is a great pattern from The Mother Bear Project. It is an outreach program for children of HIV/AIDS. Comes in knit or crochet. The pattern is super simple, and they ask that you don’t change it (but you can add a scarf or bow or something). It is heartwarming when they post on IG and it’s YOUR BEAR being given to a child. So sweet.
