I am so grateful for these videos! I have 2.5 lbs of gorgeous chocolate brown coreadale to spin for a sweater that my pre-teen asked me to knit him (whaaaattt!!??!!). I decided to rewatch this video before I got started and so glad I did! I didn't realize that this breed puffs up in finishing. I spun thinner than I originally intended and just finished my first skein as a gorgeous, puffy, squishy dk weight....just what I needed! So glad that you share all your knowledge and experienece for us to have as a reference!
Love, love, love this series. Now I know what to do with my 30 samples from WoolGatherings. Got them in 2019 and stuck them on my shelf. Can't wait to view all these videos and follow along now. Thanks! Note: My little dog looks just like yours and has to be in my lap. Have you ever caught his hair while you are spinning?
I'm glad to get to see you spin these different types of fiber! It's exciting to be able to get the extra information without having to spend the $$ at this time. Thank you for the extra information on all of these breeds. Have a blessed day!
Luther is adorable,! Glad to hear you are feeling better now. I am so enjoying this study, and look forward to more. I am definitely enabled to try different types. Take care 💓
I mean, maybe skip the Devon unless rugs are in your future. Or just call someone you know with a vintage wig and see about getting it for a trial run 😂
Corriedale along with Targhee & Tunis have turned out to be my favorites thanks to friend in Montana. The fleece are raised for meat so I have to flick and then run through my drumcarder. Lots of VM but no staple lengths that long thankfully! LOVE making "sproingy" yarn. Currently spinning "Rebecca Boone" long, long Cotswald I believe. Distance between hands while spinning and not having a death grip a little like learning to spin all over again.
Sounds lovely! I don't mind flicking and carding to remove VM, because all the steps make me happy. It's nice to try as much as you can. They're pretty much all good for something!
I love playing with the different wools, living in Texas we don't get to wear too much wool (of course there is always the every 30 year snow storm) so spinning it has allowed me to learn. Thanks for talking us through these breeds.
Everybody's grandma had some hair extension or bangs, or a wig around somewhere right?? Maybe it was just mine 😂. I know my comments made it pretty tempting, right? Good thing our channel isn't a big channel or the Devon breeders would be at my door with pitchforks right now 😂😂
Devon wool is mainly used here in the UK for carpets, so you'd definitely wouldn't want to wear anything made from this as you'd be forever itching and scratching yourself 😂🤣. I don't know too much about sheep 🐑, but my friend is a sheep farmer, so I've picked up some info over the years. They have some Herdwicks, but mainly have Lonk sheep.
You have no idea how good your videos are for me. I wait for these small islands of calm and wool talk. Thank you! And I’m so happy you are getting better!
Gosh, that actually teared me up, because I feel the same way about this. I really need this island of fun and being with my tribe right now too ❤️❤️❤️.
Very glad you're feeling better, and I have loved hearing some of your comments "Like spinning gramma or great gramma's hair" had me laughing so much. And then imagining rugs made from Granny hair :)
This series you are doing is SO INTERESTING !!💕 and I don’t even spin. Really looking forward to the rest of the wools you’ll be working up. Thank you !! 🐑
There is that consistent spin with beautiful halo again. You make all the yarn look easy to spin and so pretty. Glad you are getting back to normal. You look like you feel better.
Great video. Was the book you mention The Spinners Book of Fleece by Beth Smith? The Devon reminded me slightly of suri alpaca that I spun in the summer...I’m guessing it’s lighter and not so soft though... Great series - thank you and I’m so pleased to hear that you are feeling better🙏
Yep, I bought it in her shop. I found it right after I filmed because talking about it got my brain turning over. Now that I've looked at it, I know it's definitely where I learned that classification system! Thank you! I have spun Suri that was both heavier and lighter, but always MUCH softer than the Devon. This Devon is coarse, heavy, and strong as can be.
If the book is blue and white then I believe you are referring to The Spinner's Book of Fleece: A Breed-by-Breed Guide to Choosing and Spinning the Perfect Fiber for Every Purpose 😁
Yep, that's the one! Talking about it got my brain turning over, and I found it right after. That's the classification system my brain still uses for breeds and wool!
I've watched this twice now, and learned something both times. I always wondered why some fiber ended up bigger than it should have. Your explanation about the Corriedale puffing up more answered that question. Thank you so much!
Totally love this series.. so glad the hear you are feeling better. I am in love with corridale fleece.. seems to be my go to .. lol. Great spending time with you!!
You look so much better, be gentle with yourself while you’re recuperating. Those staples were AMAZINGLY long! I too have spun crunchy wiry grandma’s wig wool, I’m pretty sure it was Cotswold? I hope you find your book. Be good, love ya🤘🏼
I found the book! I thought I put it in the description because I figured it out during editing, but maybe I better check! There are other grandma's wig breeds - generally not my faves, but they all have their uses 😂😂
I enjoy these. You pack in so much info. I am happy to see you more energetic and feeling better. I wish I could remember the difference between woolen and worsted in the specific definitions. This last summer I made myself say the words while doing hand motions! Woolen, with two "O"s is loftier, so I made my hands bounce apart while saying Woolen. Worsted, with only one "O" I put my fingers togethers and pulled them apart.. I now can remember them when thinking of basic spinning. And yes, I am a long time spinner, with holes in the brain somehow!
I think those two words are so hard for a lot of people to really understand, because of the different usage, different reference (you could be referring to prep, or drafting style, etc.) And, trying to explain them gets so complicated, that I have shied away for the most part! I totally get what you're saying!
Okay, I'm glad to hear you say that, because I have had long Corrie before, but not that long on a regular basis. I have been able to card almost all of it. It was a very nice squishy yarn!
I didn't know corriedale wool could vary so much, that explains why some of the corriedale roving bits I've got are soft, and some feel like steel wool. I thought the yarn shops where I bought the little bumps had mixed up the roving. This breed study is very interesting.
Well, I can't promise they didn't mix up the wool, but I have had a wide variation in the characteristics exactly like you describe in my experience too. I'm learning a lot too!
Thanks so much for spinning the Devon. Spinning vicariously through you for that one. Can't wait to see you spin the next 2. I just ordered some Dorset horn. I'm spinning Corriedale , 10 , 1oz smidgens of heathered colors. Trying to do the new Fluff to Stuff on Ravelry.
I’m doing the Sheepspot Breed study, which is along the same lines but you get 150 grams of a different fiber each month. So it’s more expensive, but you get a lot of fiber to use. She also has monthly videos and I’ve learned so much.
I often spin and dye Corriedale or Corriedale cross. It is affordable and a great breed for beginners. I am almost done a garter stitch sweater that I spun in a worsted weight Corriedale. I am enjoying this spinning journey. Thanks. (Glad you are feeling better.)
I’m so glad you’re feeling better! What you described sounded like brain fog. Due to chronic illness I deal with it often. I find ice cold water, cold fruit juice, or naps helps sometimes. But it’s tough to beat. This was so interesting to watch really enjoying this study! I wonder if you’d consider doing another one in the future maybe with breeds from a different country? I’ve seen some sets on Etsy for Norwegian/ Swedish wools I believe. I hope you have a great week Trish!
I can really understand how people get frustrated feeling that way. I was actually mad a few times, and really just wanted to be left alone. I can't imagine having it all the time! I am thinking of doing something maybe with raw wools next time, so the whole prep is in my hands, but a different part of the world might be fun too. Thanks for the suggestion!
You’re looking great - glad you’re starting to feel more like yourself! Corriedale is so much fun! When I get to Devon, it’ll be my first super long wool. :S
Trish, I can tell you are feeling a lot better. Maybe, it’s the coffee. Ha ha. I just want you to know that you are a terrible influence on me. I was committed to not buying any more fiber until I finished several ongoing knitting projects. What do you know…I had to stop the video and go buy the sampler set. I do what to experience all these fibers. Can’t wait to get caught up with you. I have spun corriedale and loved it. And, yet another project to knit.
Sorry, not sorry! I did have some jet fuel in me that day 😂. I'm glad to be part of your journey even if I am a bad influence. Maybe you need a bad influence 😂😂😂
Glad you're feeling better. Are you going to make any card samples of your spinning from these breeds? I think when I start mine I might do that so I have samples of how they spin, how they ply and how they look knit up. Thanks for sharing Trish.
I just watched your video a second time to refresh how I should be spinning the Devon. I wanted to correct you about one thing when you were doing the staple test you said, “Holy cow.” It’s actually a sheep. Haha.
I'm currently spinning small (10g-ish) bits of fibre from an old advent and i just had a really hair-like one with almost no stretch to it. It felt so strange compared to anything I've spun before. I'm going to go and check the breed. Edit: Mine was Whitefaced woodland.
I’m just loving this series. So informative . I haven’t tried many fiber types yet so this will really help when looking at purchasing fiber in the future. Thanks Trish!
I just bought a cheap espinner as a step up to a real wheel someday! It doesn’t have the cottagecore vibes I love about a lot of the fiber hobby, but it’s still working great!
I'm sure it'll be a big help to learning. You never know. You might fall in love with it. I love being able to just put mine in a backpack and take it places to spin without fussing dragging my whole wheel around.
You are looking great, Trish. I'm really enjoying your breed study videos. No Devon for me, it looks too hairy and crispy when it is done and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to weave any rugs! I looked at that Woolgatherings bundle a while ago and was very tempted.
Thanks! You don't realize how bad you felt until you start to feel like yourself again! I didn't make that Devon too tempting, I know, but I was telling the truth! 😂😂
I am trying to think of a project to do with all the little sample skiens when I have completed my study. I will be adding a few more breeds to my study. I have a small herd of romeadale/cvm. I will fornsure be following your progress. I love your personality you are so fun.
If you get a chance to view "In Sheep's Clothing" by Nola Fournier, I think you would enjoy it as well. Thanks for sharing with us as you go through this journey. Yarn looks great!
Wow I have a lot to learn lol. Thank you for putting this together 💕. I remember back when I was a kid I was given a scarf that I was very allergic to and from how you described the Devon it might have been made from that. It took less than a minute and my face, neck and hands were swollen and red and I could barely breathe. It was really bad.
I've had a few thoughts, but no final decision. I have been thinking it might be fun to knit something with linen stitch just going through the yarns one after another and frame it. I've wanted to frame a big piece for my living room for a long, long time. Or I might weave something with it instead. I do think it's narrowed down to those two.
I really enjoy these series, even though I don't spin yet, but I'm very close to starting. At the moment, most of this sounds like gibbrish to me, but I really hope by watching these I'll learn something and once I start, I can rewatch these and actually understand what's going on 😄 What was your first spinning project? How and why did you start?
I'm going to put these questions in the next Q&A. I have a playlist set up, so if you do want to come back, you can just pick it and go through when you feel like it! ❤️
First of all, so happy to see you with more energy! Maybe the coffee is helping? 🤩 Do you feel a big enough difference in your overall health since Sept when you have up caffeine? Just curious.
I really gave it up in hopes of having fewer hot flashes and less anxiety. It has helped, but no other health complaints/improvements that I've noticed. I felt sluggish at first, of course. Now I can just get up and get straight into the shower and get coffee after if i'm having some. I could never do that before, so I actually get WAY more done each day.
It’s so good to see you coming back into yourself, Trish! Take it easy though! Sometimes that last little bit of healing takes a while. Also, did I already comment on the last one to say how much I LOVE this series idea? I got a fiber subscription to try different fibers, but I doubt I’ll ever see some of these (like the Devon) in there. It’s so cool not only to hear your research on these wools, but also to watch you spin them and hear your opinions of the experience. I’m learning a lot from these so far! Looking forward to next week! (Also, it’s probably the camera angle, but Luther looks like he always tries to get up in your spinning. Does he ever get himself caught in the draft??)
He has gotten hair caught in the singles before. It's always just been a tiny bit, so it yanks out before I can stop it. Now I raise the spinning higher to prevent that. I don't want to make him afraid to sit on my lap while I spin because he does love the rocking 😂. Yes, I'm a helicopter dog mom.
It was a level of tired I've never experienced! I have to say I feel for people in that situation because I really wanted to tell people to please just leave me alone, and that's not a normal feeling for me.
I was gifted some fibre a while ago. I didn't know what it was, but it felt just awful. I washed and spun it and it is now sitting on my shelf, never to be used. Watching this I think it might have been Devon.
It has been caught when he stands up to change positions, but I am trained now to raise the yarn enough to clear him. It hasn't been enough to scare him off my lap when I spin. I think he likes the rocking now like a baby😂
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that it's more a function of how much lanolin is left in, and how it is spun, and then used that makes it more or less waterproof. I have never really spun for that characteristic, and I really don't like more than a tiny touch of lanolin left in, so there may be someone with more experience on that aspect that would like to weigh in!
Me too, and I LOVE IT, but I think fine wools were more difficult to get then, so breeders were trying to make everything produce a fine wool. I love a really crisp woolly feeling wool, so Romney is a favorite for me.
Whenever I’m making a two-ply yarn, I wind it off of the bobbin onto a book with a double pointed needles in the middle of it, to Andean ply. Is there a significant difference between Andean plying and the Turkey Hand method?
Hi Trish, I have question. My weaving is lopsided. What do I need to do to correct it? I have pictures if you can email or or text me. I’ll put my contact info in a message on Etsy. Thank you, Cat

I have. It has even happened so fast that it rips a tiny tuft out, but he doesn't even flinch. We are so lucky to have them.
I'm glad to get to see you spin these different types of fiber! It's exciting to be able to get the extra information without having to spend the $$ at this time. Thank you for the extra information on all of these breeds. Have a blessed day!
Glad it was helpful!
So glad you are doing this! I still have no clue what breeds are softest and hearing that something isn’t is great information to know.
I'm learning a lot.

Good afternoon my friend, I am really enjoying this series! Take care!
Glad you enjoy it!
Totally love this series.. so glad the hear you are feeling better. I am in love with corridale fleece.. seems to be my go to .. lol. Great spending time with you!!
Corrie is like the Martha Stewart of wool, it can just do anything 😂
You look so much better, be gentle with yourself while you’re recuperating. Those staples were AMAZINGLY long! I too have spun crunchy wiry grandma’s wig wool, I’m pretty sure it was Cotswold? I hope you find your book. Be good, love ya🤘🏼
I found the book! I thought I put it in the description because I figured it out during editing, but maybe I better check! There are other grandma's wig breeds - generally not my faves, but they all have their uses 😂😂

It’s so fun to watch you spin the breed study. I’m new to spinning, and I haven’t heard of a lot of the breeds in your unboxing video. Fun stuff!
Awesome! Thank you!
So glad you are feeling better! This breed study is so fun and interesting. I was shocked when you showed the staple length of the Corriedale.
Glad you enjoyed it! Honestly, you could skip the Devon probably and not be missing out unless you really want to make rugs or saddle blankets 😂
Thanks for your update on the wool study. I spun the corridale 3 ply light sock. It spun like a dream. So far it’s my favorite!
I really enjoyed it. I have to say for me right now, it's between the Corrie and the Charollais fighting it out for favorite.
Fun and educational. Thanks for your hard work putting these videos together.
Thanks for watching!
I'm so happy to hear you are feeling better. I'm loving this series. Thank you for sharing everything you are learning!
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I love that this package is a fairly economical way to spin a bunch of different breeds that most people probably wouldn’t be exposed to.

the spinners book of fleece was published in 2003 it is a blue and white book. It has some spun wool, locks and a niddy noddy on the cover.
That was it! I knew some of you would help me find it!

Thanks! You don't realize how bad you felt until you start to feel like yourself again! I didn't make that Devon too tempting, I know, but I was telling the truth! 😂😂
I just bought a moorit corridale fleece on Sunday. It is pretty. The sheep is named peanut brittle.
Oh, you lucky thing! There are so many colors and variations, I never get tired of it!
I am also doing a breed study. I got woolgatherings 30 breed wool samples. So far I've done about 5 breeds so far sents January 1st. So much fun!!
That is awesome! This is the same study. I found it on Etsy and thought it would be perfect!
I am trying to think of a project to do with all the little sample skiens when I have completed my study. I will be adding a few more breeds to my study. I have a small herd of romeadale/cvm. I will fornsure be following your progress. I love your personality you are so fun.
your hair looks really good in this video!!
Thanks. I am very challenged when it comes to hair. If I wasn't married to someone that likes it, I would get myself a pixie and be done with it.
I really enjoyed watching these and can't wait for the next batch!
It's filmed! So it should be up next Tuesday with no problems! Thank you so much.
That looks like a great book. Thank you
It really is a great book.
If you get a chance to view "In Sheep's Clothing" by Nola Fournier, I think you would enjoy it as well. Thanks for sharing with us as you go through this journey. Yarn looks great!
Thanks, I will look it up!
Yay for Breed Study!!!
If someone made you a scarf from Devon, they are mean.
I ordered the fleece book today. I wish I could spin with ya, but have to wait on ashford
You can spin along with the playlist later if you want to! I'll always be here, spinning it over and over again for anybody that wants to do it later.
I'm so glad that you are feeling better! I'm loving the breed study. Any thoughts on what you will do with al the yarn?
I've had a few thoughts, but no final decision. I have been thinking it might be fun to knit something with linen stitch just going through the yarns one after another and frame it. I've wanted to frame a big piece for my living room for a long, long time. Or I might weave something with it instead. I do think it's narrowed down to those two.
I really enjoy these series, even though I don't spin yet, but I'm very close to starting. At the moment, most of this sounds like gibbrish to me, but I really hope by watching these I'll learn something and once I start, I can rewatch these and actually understand what's going on 😄
What was your first spinning project?
Are you talking about Alden Amos' book? The Big Book of Handspinning?
It was Beth's book, The Spinner's Guide to Fleece. I bought it again, but this time it's digital, so it won't take up space!
Spinners Book of Fleece sorts by fleece type and is blue and white.
That's the one. I bought it ... again 😂
I know from people here in the uk , have had those tired feeling after COVID-19.
Could be! I've tried a few that felt similar. I know there is a use for each type, but I will probably skip it in the future 😂😂
Please show us how you wind the turkey claw yarn on your hand to two ply it. TKS have a great day....
Hi Kathy! Here you go: th-cam.com/video/wz-O8HSbLWw/w-d-xo.html
Fascinating! I think I’ll be saying that a lot 😂
I think the book you are thinking about might be: The Knitter’s Book of Wool.
There's a Spinners Book of Fleece and The Fleece and Fiber Source book. I own both and they're great! I'll have to look for the one you mentioned.
It turned out to be The Spinner's Book of Fleece by Beth Smith.
Do you ever get the puppies fur caught in your yarn as you spin?
It has been caught when he stands up to change positions, but I am trained now to raise the yarn enough to clear him. It hasn't been enough to scare him off my lap when I spin. I think he likes the rocking now like a baby😂
I wonder if the hairier wool is more water resistant?
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that it's more a function of how much lanolin is left in, and how it is spun, and then used that makes it more or less waterproof. I have never really spun for that characteristic, and I really don't like more than a tiny touch of lanolin left in, so there may be someone with more experience on that aspect that would like to weigh in!
Romney is a good fleece , I spin this a lot.
Me too, and I LOVE IT, but I think fine wools were more difficult to get then, so breeders were trying to make everything produce a fine wool. I love a really crisp woolly feeling wool, so Romney is a favorite for me.
Ooher that Devon is a no for me lol!! I do love Corriedale though, am addicted to the pumpkin shade fron world of wool and it's still on sale 🤣
Corriedale can do anything, it's like Wonder Woman. But yeah, Devon will definitely be a no from me in the future as well. Blech!
Are you thinking of The Spinners Book of Fleece?
Yep, that's the one! I bought it .... again. 😂
Whenever I’m making a two-ply yarn, I wind it off of the bobbin onto a book with a double pointed needles in the middle of it, to Andean ply. Is there a significant difference between Andean plying and the Turkey Hand method?
Nope. I have done that way too. Turkey hand is just a subset of Andean plying!
What spinning wheel do you have?
I have five wheels, There's a video somewhere on them. th-cam.com/video/s_n3v1QRcY8/w-d-xo.html
Hi Trish,
I have question. My weaving is lopsided. What do I need to do to correct it? I have pictures if you can email or or text me. I’ll put my contact info in a message on Etsy.
Thank you,
Cat
I got it, and answered you there!
Well now I've gone and purchased a breed study.. not this one. It's only 12 breeds.
Good for you! You'll learn so much!
@@FiberLoveDiary I guess the only question is what to do with the yarn when I'm done?
I like luther. let him spin.
He can't do it without yanking hair out from between his toes, but I'm not against letting him try 😂
Can you imagine weighing 24-44 pounds less after a haircut? 😆
Even 10 pounds is crazy. They must feel so free!
