      @@davestvwatching2408 No. Walter was extremely physical irrespective of size. So much so that several years after Campbell's career was cut short, Payton was approaching Brown's all-time mark. When asked about Payton, he said, "I don't know how he's lasted as long as he has playing so physical at his size (5" 10' 205lbs). I didn't." Payton saw Campbell come and go. He wasn't a big bruising back, but he exploded into defenders for 13 years, missing only 1 game. He wasn't ONLY a power back like the dudes on this list. He was a halfback, so he could make you miss too, but he was known to run over DBs, LBs and some DLs consistently.

    Jim Brown once said, “you can put me at number one, Earl Campbell at number two, then you can put the rest wherever you want”! Earls most famous nickname was the Tyler Rose. He grew up in Tyler Texas on a rose farm. His thighs were the size of tree trunks! I got to see him 10 to 12 times as a kid. He always had the Astrodome (stadium) rockin!

    Cool video, but the most feared running back in NFL history was NOT a power back. His name is Barry Sanders, and NO ONE wanted to find themselves one on one against him for fear of being made to look incredubly foolish. You should check out his highlights.

      Barry Sanders for sure. I would put LaDainian Tomlinson up there, too. Everyone already knew he was going to light up the game when he got the handoff, much to the glee of all those lucky fantasy football players who got to pick first. An average game for him would be aa career game for most players. He still holds (or shares) 15 NFL records.

    The reason that John Riggins got better with age was coaching. For most of his career he had coaches who made him fit into their system.
    In 1980 Riggins sat out the season due to a contract dispute. He was 31 at the time. In 1981 the Redskins (now Commanders) hired future Pro Football (coaching) and NASCAR (team owner) Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs. Gibbs talked Riggins into returning (famous Riggins quote “I’m bored, I’m broke and I’m back”) and then built an offense around Riggins’ running style.
    Riggins’ nickname of “The Diesel” was because, just like a diesel engine, it took him a while to get warmed up, but once he did he could go forever.
    Today, most running backs are washed up by 30. With today’s defensive linemen being stronger and faster than linemen of the past due to enhanced training techniques, they put more punishment on the bodies of running backs and they wear out younger.

    I had the privilege to be in Houston to see Henry in the final game of the 2020 season. I was stoked to go to my first NFL game, but I was ecstatic to see Henry. I was cheering for the Texans and hoping he would make history even though he is a Titan. It was definitely incredible seeing him plow through the Texans defense like he did. It was the big topic that me and my mom talked about on our way home back to Austin from the game.

    The comedian Richard Pryor used to like to tell stories about Jim Brown. One of them went like this: During a game a defensive player stuck his hand thru Jim's facemask. Jim immediately bit down on the hand. When asked why Jim responded: "Everything outside my mask belongs to him. Everything inside my mask belongs to me." I don't know if that's a true story, but if it isn't, it ought to be.

      Those are all speed or elusive backs, this was a list of power backs. All three mentioned are great running backs in their own right and sometime even better than power backs, but you go into games wondering how bad getting hit by Derrick Henry or "The Bus" is going to hurt when they collide with you, you go into games against Barry Sanders wondering how foolish you're going to look tackling air when he jukes completely around you leaving the tackler wondering where he went.

    Hey Bees, one thing you should know about american football - back in the days when most of these guys played, the offensive backfield consisted of the quarterback, the running back or halfback who was the speed runner, and the fullback… who was positioned behind the QB & in front of the halfback.
    Back then they did not use the shotgun snap - the QB was immediately behind the center who snapped the ball.
    The fullback would usually be the lead blocker for the running back - plowing the way for the speedier guy to get past the other team’’s defensive linemen.
    But often the fullback would be given the ball and could be through an opening more quickly than the halfback because he was closer.
    That’s where these big guys were featured. Thanks !

  • @arcxjo

    6:50 on average, running backs have the shortest NFL tenures, usually tapping out after 2 or 3 years, so even making it TO 30 on the pro stage usually means you're in elite company. To have your best years at that point is virtually unheard of.
    The positions with the longest NFL careers are generally kickers (good ones play into their 40s) and perhaps surprisingly, quarterbacks (the league likes to protect their money makers, so you can't hit them or, if it's Tom Brady, even hurt their feelings).

There is a specialty position called fullback and that's what these guys generally are. Not exclusively, but all of these backs are known for being huge slamming players. I would guess someone has already said it, but this is a list of the most physical running backs; not necessarily the best running backs ever. From this video: Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Jerome Bettis, John Riggins, and Derrick Henry (whenever he retires) are the ones who would be on a Top 20-25 All-Time list.
    Brown is always in the mix as the best ever. It's always between him and 3 or 4 others. Usually Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith thrown into that interchangeable group with Brown, along with a few others. Depends on who is writing the list.

  • @TheLwaller09
    @TheLwaller09 ปีที่แล้ว

    This list is accurate.
    #1 Jim Brown
    Everybody else.
    And that's coming from a guy who likes Walter Payton and is old enough to have seen Barry Sanders play.
    Barry is probably the greatest football player ever pound for pound. He was indescribable for his size. But Jim Brown in his prime would dominate TODAY'S NFL. He was a freight train with a helmet on.

    • @ambisinistral
      @ambisinistral ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to further clarify, Alstott average 3.7 yards per carry in his career. Those are mediocre numbers for a running back. However, in an era when fullbacks were either not used or mainly just blockers Tampa Bay lined him up as a half back but listed him as a full back where, since he out preformed real full backs, he got his pro bowl bids. Real a sleazy move on Tampa's part which a lot, and I mean a lot, of fans around the league complained about. It's a joke he is on this list compared to many much, much better power backs who were omitted.

  • @tvc1848
    @tvc1848 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think maybe a few people misunderstand most feared.
    These guys are punishers that probably hit would be tacklers harder than they get hit.
    Jamaal Charles from the Kansas City Chiefs had the most yards per carry in NFL history (5.38) and most yards in a single quarter (165) but I don’t think anyone was scared to tackle him head on.
    Earl Campbell only had a 4.3 yards per carry and no one wanted to tackle him head on.
    Jamaal Charles, Barry Sanders, Tony Dorsett and those types of runners would try to step, spin or slip around a defender for extra yards. Mike Alstott, John Riggins, Christian Okoye, etc., would say, hold my beer and watch this as they put a helmet in the sternum of the attempted tackler and see how far they could knock them off their feet.
    THAT is what this video is about.

    Thought court case should be won by August 2023 but might take a lil longer.
    Will update when more info is provided.

    The average career for a running back in the NFL is 3.5 years, they take a beating especially power backs

    I've watched all of these players on the list in action and the only criticism is that it dismisses players from an earlier year. One such guy that I've often heard about was Marion Motley. He not only attacked defenders but would also play linebacker and knock the crap out of the other team's running backs.

    My son started playing football at the age of 6. He ended up getting the nickname’Big Mac’ because the one child grabbed his pants and my son dragged him down the field. In high school he took down three boys at one time just by putting his arms out and the boys ran into him. They looked like they ran into a clothesline they just went backwards and took a minute to getup.

    Sadly these kinds of power backs are mostly a thing of the past. Fullbacks have been all but phased out entirely and with such a heavy emphasis on the passing game in modern football the focus is now on more finessed RB's that can act as receivers as well. That said you CANNOT have a list of feared RB's and NOT put Barry Sanders on there. I know the theme of this video was RB's who can just run guys over but that's just it, Barry didn't need to. He'd just zig-zag through your entire defense breaking tackles as he went. No one wanted to block him because he'd just embarrass you as he made a cut that left you faceplanted in the turf while he hit the turbocharge and ran it in for 6.
    Here's a list of just 50 of his best plays and this barely scratches the surface of the RB GOAT's legacy. th-cam.com/video/PBhn1wMyzV4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=NFL

      @@italiano8686 Yeah and I watched him live. Same for Barry.
      Payton trucked people but he wasn't considered a power back. Most consider him to be a balanced back. Capable of both running styles. The guys on this list are pure power runners.
