FrostNova is such an amazing character. Her and Patriot are a tandem that I am really emotional about. Add to that, Ace and the Old Operators of Rhodes Island, their deaths made me so invested in their stories.
BaoUner - composer of the most of those orchestrated BGMs - is usually overshadowed by works of Adam Gubman, Obadiah Brown-Beach and other artists who do character singles - but still i could say that this man is the one who's influence on the feel of the game itself and main story line is the strongest
Mudrock's boss theme (Unshakable) and the menu theme (Der Tag neigt sich) from Twilight of Wolumonde are some of my favorite tracks in the game. BaoUner is definitely underrated amongst the other composers who have worked on Arknights.
I don't know if anyones mentioned it but she's also in universe the singer for Mephisto's other theme Lullabye- which is supposed to have been something Frostnova used to sing to calm Mephisto's chronic nightmares and something Faust also enjoyed listening too.
Random fact: FrostNova used to be a kind of sister figure to Mephisto and Faust, and she often sang to them, that's the origin of the song Lullabye that I'm pretty sure you did a video on
FrostNova is really, one of the few characters that the fandom really loves, to the point that many were coping for her to be playable Her story, from her abuse by the Ursus Empire (equivalent of Russia), to her being rescued by Patriot (the behemoth of a unit seen besides her) and her inevitable fight against Rhodes Island, really made her a very well-written character. They WILL drop a "what if" banner when she dies in the anime. Mark my words. This is what they've been waiting for. This wouldn't be the first alternate reality operator and the anime tie-in is giving them the excuse to finally do it. It would also just be a very successful banner financially and could potentially get a lot of new players from the people that just watched the anime without playing the game. Not doing it would be extremely idiotic on every level.

When she's at death doors, her powers die along with her, so she warms up in the Doctor's (you, the player) arms, and can finally feel human touch.
Frostnova is so terrifying in lore, but unfortunately not so much in game when you can just deploy an angel that likes apple pie and not deal with her for the whole stage.

Also, I have to agree with the argument that BGM goes way harder when you do have the context of what's happening, so I want to point out a really awesome detail about Absolute Zero. If my memory serves me right, among others, Absolute Zero plays in a difficult stage in which you are against FrostNova and her Yeti squadron, it's a very simple linear map, in which the Yetis and FrostNova march towards your point of defense, behind that point, there is a cliff and even if they would pass you defenses they march towards their inevitable death. The stage draws a very cool parallel to the tragedy of FrostNova and the Yetis in the story, the only way to stop from their doom is to end them yourself, there is no going back, no place for reconciliations or attempting to make amends. Only a battle to the death.

Long time no see. The frost nova theme is the the first song in Arknight give me this cinematic feeling. You can feel the danger frost in the air, and death grasp your throat. Hope Macro can do more main story OST song like double dragon, tarlula boss fight. These are all hidden gem.
FrostNova is an extremely sympathetic antagonist and horrifyingly strong, so her themes certainly do her justice. Under different circumstances she would have been one of our greatest allies.
The story of Frostnova and Patriot is really just a tragedy as a whole. RI against Reunion, two different factions who are fighting for justice for the infected, but the difference in their ideologies has set them up on different paths. Where RI is trying a more diplomatic approach, Reunion has chosen the path of blood and violence to take control of its own situation. They are so far gone that they cannot stop even if they want to, even if they know they are wrong because stopping now means the death of all their brother and sisters who died believing in a world where they can be equal would be in vain, that they would be subjected to even greater violence if they do not accomplish what they set out to do, that they will not stop until every single one of them has fallen and become a catalyst to further spread the infection. It's just tragic to know how unfortunate circumstances can spiral resolvable conflicts into catastrophic battles.
Funny you mention the dirty fighting part as in the story the entire fight is your guys trying to live long enough for frost nova to essentially die of cancer.(to really simplify things)
It's just my theory, but drums and percussion will make much more sense if you listen to patriot theme. They reflect Frostnova's relation with Patriot in my opinion.
One thing that never occured to me with 37°C which Marco mentions is a "passing of the baton" to the strings ( 19:51 ) , which I think is actually meant to represent Frostnova passing on her hopes to amiya at the end of her story, since Amiya is often musically represented by the violin since she's a violinist herself (see wrathful cerulean flame). Realy beautifully captures that last conversation with her
Marco saying "I have to do this, I can't stop here right now, I got to move forward". You see that line right there is what she did in the story in Chapter 6. Honestly I'm still amazed by how accurately you guess the character or game story from the music alone. So long story short she did move forward and she didn't stop but her time is up as she collapse and after exchanging words she finally died with a smile on your characters arms.
Quiet vengeance, ice cracking, it's dangerous... Yeah, that brings me back to when I faced the second boss fight against her. Not only her mechanic at the time was devastating, her power is just overwhelming for low-players that it literally made us pray for RNG, please don't land that black ice on my operators. Else, she'll shatter your line of defense and... game over.
This!!! This is what I felt and experienced at that particular stage... I only had Puresteam as the only one capable of unfreezing my ops and it was a nightmare didn't finish the stage until I got Lumen as another healer with a status resist buff... Even then took me several tries since there's no defence against the black ice...

However, they were so powerful she could never feel warmth and her body could cause freezing if anyone so much as touched her for too long. To add what others have mentioned about Frostnova constantly moving forward, I really feel that her theme emphasizes the sheer power and inevitability of her advance. In the boss battle itself, one of her gimmicks is that Frostnova freezes tiles, and when that happens she both instantly knocks out anyone you have deployed on those tiles and renders them unusable. So you've got this constant sense of this inevitable wall of ice pushing toward you during her boss fight.
They aren't vilains, they are enemies. And to be honest, the last moments of Patriots must have been really terrifying to assist to has he died just before ending Amya's life in a hope to save the world.

37˚c always makes me so emotional. It signifies Yelena’s heart finally thawing out in her final moments, as an honorary Rhodes island operator. 37˚c is the usual body temperature for humans.
This bring me pain again.. I remember feeling I had when encountered her for the first time. Song by song. The Winter is marching forward. She will take what she has to, walking through the frozen ruins. How can an Element be interested in your fate? Will you flee and live, or will fight and die - to Her it is does not matter. You brought an anger of the Element upon you. Now, you will pay the price for it. No. More. Holding. Back. You will die here. (And 37° is just... warmth and pain.) So much pain and suffering that cause so devastating anger and hate towards this twisted and sick world Eh... True, this is a case where context matters a lot. Though she not really was a hero, she was a warrior indeed. As to "all this was not in vain", who knows. All her old companions and battle brothers are dead, and no for a good reason. But maybe.. Another "fun" note is that FrostNova is a daughter to the Patriot, whose character song you already well know under the name of Requiem. Definitely one of the happiest families out there, heh...

@16:38 On that heroic part Marco kept mentioning on the Absolute Zero song; that's exactly the vibe I got when I was first reading the story. Yelena is doing something heroic by her standards but she also knows it is the wrong thing to do in order to move forward towards her ambition. It's also hard for her to give in and change armies in the middle of war(since iirc we had given her 2-3 chances to change over to Rhodes) since her very own father who adopted her is following Reunion until his last breath. Frostnova looked to be intelligent, perceptive and heroic to hell and back. She just had to pay with her own life~
While it only plays for the first time after her death, and for another character, Lullabye is actually part of FrostNova's story. We're told that, in the early days of Reunion when they were a ragtag resistance group scrounging around the Ursus tundra, FrostNova would sing a lullaby to Mephisto to help the poor PTSD ridden child to sleep, and that song is implied to have been Lullabye (which is why the lyrics are in Russian [Ursian]). So when, in his final moments, in pain and transformed beyond recognition, the stage - and to me, Mephisto too, diagetically - breaks out into Lullabye, it adds another layer of heartbreak. Not just to Mephisto and Faust's deaths, but to FrostNova's as well. It's also notable that one trailer for the new season of the anime, that's adapting the Main Story chapters that include FrostNova, decided to use Lullabye as background music.

Let's be honest here, you are crying not because of the music or the FrostNova's story but because how hard the stage is, especially if you day 1 player who faced this battle in early 2020...
Frostnova, a beautiful and tragic character that the fanbase loves for good reason. The coldest of cold, to her very heart, but wants to believe in hope. You, the doctor, reach out to her during the conflicts, but its all words she has heard before and suffered from (“I want to help you”). Ursus, a powerful but harsh country, was not kind to her and those close to her. Alongside Patriot, who helped her survive, she can not mentally afford to be burned again, making her even colder. This side is the only one she feels she has a chance to survive, even for another day, and nobody will get close enough to hurt her. After a tense, methodical, slow paced fight, as a front of ice and snow creeps up on you, literally taking the very ground from you, Frostnova is defeated and her coldness becomes warmer since she can no longer maintain it. She dies in the arms of the doctor, your arms, after being unable to touch anyone for so, so long, due to the originium arts that she has relied on to survive in a brutal world. A world that seemingly hates people like her and wants destroyed. It hurts, as the doctor, because defeating this disease is your mission and you can’t save everyone. Frostnova deserved better, both as an enemy in battle and as a person, and to hold her as she passed is an honor, but a very painful one. You want to save her, because her pain is real. You know she is not evil, but someone who hurts. A lot of people really hoped she could recover and become an operator. Frostnova is a well written and developed character that makes you feel for her, despite being fictional and an enemy at the end of the day. Her music gets me teared up. Especially 37°C. Frostnova is the kind of person where during your journey, you swear to work and fight harder so “Frostnova” never happens again. Cold, lonely suffering, and wanting to change a world that wants you gone because you are different, and it isn’t your fault. It’s justice for those hurt, but also love for your fellow person. The lore in Arknights is dark, but beautiful. I’d like to think my personal “doctor office” has a small shrine to Frostnova, to remember her, those who passed, and to help those like her. “Do it for her” kind of feeling. That’s my essay on it anyway.

To add what others have mentioned about Frostnova constantly moving forward, I really feel that her theme emphasizes the sheer power and inevitability of her advance. In the boss battle itself, one of her gimmicks is that Frostnova freezes tiles, and when that happens she both instantly knocks out anyone you have deployed on those tiles and renders them unusable. So you've got this constant sense of this inevitable wall of ice pushing toward you during her boss fight.
Frostnova and her adopted father Patriot are the two villains in the series you feel awful for having to fight
They aren't vilains, they are enemies.
And to be honest, the last moments of Patriots must have been really terrifying to assist to has he died just before ending Amya's life in a hope to save the world.
@@lechatrelou6393 Yeah Patriot essentially decided to take the risk in the hope the prophecy would not playout and let Amiya live. Like he had the chance to end her before he died, but didn't.

It's heartbreaking melody when you as player need to execute the character who has this ost, and she isn't even the bad person.... Just the principle and circumstance.

@16:38 On that heroic part Marco kept mentioning on the Absolute Zero song; that's exactly the vibe I got when I was first reading the story. Yelena is doing something heroic by her standards but she also knows it is the wrong thing to do in order to move forward towards her ambition. It's also hard for her to give in and change armies in the middle of war(since iirc we had given her 2-3 chances to change over to Rhodes) since her very own father who adopted her is following Reunion until his last breath.
Frostnova looked to be intelligent, perceptive and heroic to hell and back. She just had to pay with her own life~

While it only plays for the first time after her death, and for another character, Lullabye is actually part of FrostNova's story.
We're told that, in the early days of Reunion when they were a ragtag resistance group scrounging around the Ursus tundra, FrostNova would sing a lullaby to Mephisto to help the poor PTSD ridden child to sleep, and that song is implied to have been Lullabye (which is why the lyrics are in Russian [Ursian]).
So when, in his final moments, in pain and transformed beyond recognition, the stage - and to me, Mephisto too, diagetically - breaks out into Lullabye, it adds another layer of heartbreak. Not just to Mephisto and Faust's deaths, but to FrostNova's as well.
It's also notable that one trailer for the new season of the anime, that's adapting the Main Story chapters that include FrostNova, decided to use Lullabye as background music.
I would like to see you reading about the characters in the wiki after listening to the music, like you do with League of Legends. I think that would be really cool!!!

Frostnova, a beautiful and tragic character that the fanbase loves for good reason.
The coldest of cold, to her very heart, but wants to believe in hope. You, the doctor, reach out to her during the conflicts, but its all words she has heard before and suffered from (“I want to help you”). Ursus, a powerful but harsh country, was not kind to her and those close to her. Alongside Patriot, who helped her survive, she can not mentally afford to be burned again, making her even colder. This side is the only one she feels she has a chance to survive, even for another day, and nobody will get close enough to hurt her.
After a tense, methodical, slow paced fight, as a front of ice and snow creeps up on you, literally taking the very ground from you, Frostnova is defeated and her coldness becomes warmer since she can no longer maintain it.
She dies in the arms of the doctor, your arms, after being unable to touch anyone for so, so long, due to the originium arts that she has relied on to survive in a brutal world. A world that seemingly hates people like her and wants destroyed.
It hurts, as the doctor, because defeating this disease is your mission and you can’t save everyone. Frostnova deserved better, both as an enemy in battle and as a person, and to hold her as she passed is an honor, but a very painful one. You want to save her, because her pain is real. You know she is not evil, but someone who hurts.
A lot of people really hoped she could recover and become an operator. Frostnova is a well written and developed character that makes you feel for her, despite being fictional and an enemy at the end of the day.
Her music gets me teared up. Especially 37°C. Frostnova is the kind of person where during your journey, you swear to work and fight harder so “Frostnova” never happens again. Cold, lonely suffering, and wanting to change a world that wants you gone because you are different, and it isn’t your fault. It’s justice for those hurt, but also love for your fellow person.
The lore in Arknights is dark, but beautiful. I’d like to think my personal “doctor office” has a small shrine to Frostnova, to remember her, those who passed, and to help those like her. “Do it for her” kind of feeling.
That’s my essay on it anyway.

You should check out the Mundus boss fight from Devil May Cry. Something about track 2 makes me think of it. Maybe the vocals.
