FYI: the cow is not dead yet. Modern stunners don't usually penetrate into the brain to prevent mad cow disease in the brain from spreading. The cow basically got the most intense knockout punch to the head possible.
Actually the captive bolt does penetrate the brain, rendering the animal unconscious but doesn’t kill it. Mad cow disease can only be spread by eating certain parts of the infected cow, and has essentially been eradicated from many countries :)
