You laid it out quite well. Especially glad about the part in the end saying the just smut or shipping is not actually wrong either. That is such an overlooked argument because its so much more convenient to just say all fanfic is not like this. And a story even can be smut and deep (not that every smut needs to be, but I saw it quite often). For example Entrapdak fandom (ship between an autistic bisexual engineer and an physically disabled vaguely male alien clone who is also an evil overlord) has written so many fics that are about s*x on the surface but use that to explore how alienated from your own body and desires you become as a disabled person living through discrimination.

@@Hyzentley i love that! the entrapdak fanfic sounds beautiful! smut can be the plot device!
but yeah, i mean it’s true that not all fanfic is smutty or ship-y, but even if it is, i think it’s okay. sometimes i just want characters to be in love (or better yet be in love and there be a lot of angst).
and a lot of irl books anymore have a lot of smut in it. like my older sisters were talking to me about an irl boom they were reading with smut. friends have recommended me books with a lot of sex scenes like woven in there. like idk why it’s weirder if i wanted to talk about pre-established fictional characters.

i love this video!! i've been in fandom spaces seriously for about 5 years and some of my favorite written works have been fanfictions!! i've written my own and it's seriously helped me become a better writer in different ways. fanfiction defender until i die!!!

hi and thank you so much! i feel like even within fandoms, there's usually a fun like sub-community among fanfiction readers and writers. i agree that writing fanfiction can really help with writing skills in general. i also think it helps reading skills because we're probably reading a lot more than the average person haha. and i am glad i've found a fellow fanfiction defender!

fanfiction is kinda just what reading was before publishing houses overtook a reading "market." people would swap journals full of short stories, or just share them in any public form available (like in a newspaper) and you'd just have to give something a try before knowing you'd enjoy it. you didnt rely on recognizing someone's name from an ad (or even pre-established works, a lot of the time. remember, there were times before even Austen and Dickens were well-known!), you didnt wait until a reputable publisher who "knew books, so you trusted their tastes" sold you on something, you just gave it a try from the love of reading.

i agree. i'm glad we're getting to a point where reading fanfic isn't something that has like 'shame' around it. it's literally just a story-- just because a publishing house publishes a book doesn't make it good and vice versa!

Please excuse the long comment, but I didn't want to leave like 10 comments lol
    I hope you feel better!
I love a good fanfic video. Glad I found your channel :)
In middle school I read and wrote shitty fanfic, but I think it made me a better writer! It's such great writing practice to have a world and characters to go off of. Also, not all fanfic is even romantic! I love a good platonic/found family fic. But even if it, SO WHAT!
Your take on Marvel movies being fanfic blew my mind!!
Completely agree with your take about lack of queer representation. With Harry Potter as an example specifically, when the original author is a piece of shit and/or the source material lacks diversity, many fanfics remedy these issues. Also, with one of the most popular tags being about ignoring the canon epilogue, people have the space to imagine the characters resolving in a more characteristic and satisfying way.
I just don't get why people love being mad about things that don't affect them.
    (also your cat is gorgeous)

Omg I love the long comment! I’m sorry that this is probably an even longer response!
I also wrote fanfiction in middle school, and, while I don’t think it made me a better writer, it made me happy and helped me make friends in fandom communities I was a part in!
I love found family so much! I also just love character analysis fanfiction, especially if it’s like getting inside the mind and empathizing with characters we don’t get to see the pov much in the IP. Like it truly can be so canon compliant and not-romance, but I just want to know what the character is thinking. And some people write it SO BEAUTIFULLY.
Thank you for getting my Marvel analogy! Yes, I did feel like I peaked when it occurred to me haha. Anyways, I’m personally a BIG comic book fan, and most comic books are taking a beloved, pre-established characters and like just tell a new story. Like comics even have special graphic novels that are literally “non canon oneshot spin-offs”. Literally a fanfic AU!?!?
I agree, I think the want for more queer representation has been and will continue to be a big factor in fan fiction, and I love it. I’ve also seen other people/ other videos taking about reclaiming Harry Potter from the horrible creator, and I think it’s great!
Thank you for the great comment. Again, I feel like fanfiction has become a lot less stigmatized, but I was still shocked when someone commented negative vibes about it haha.
(And my cat Tokki says thank you)

@@MaliahLin YESS to the character analysis fics as well!! Even some rewrites from different character perspectives can be really good at times without it just reiterating everything we’ve already seen/read. I love when people really dig into the mind of character.
I’m the type of person where even if someone’s take on character isn’t exactly what I had in mind, if the writing is good I’ll still give it a read and find it super interesting.
So many comic writers just write AU Fanfic and not enough people are talking about it 😤😤
I’ve also seen a few video essays about the Harry Potter issue. Specifically how that basically where the entire Marauders fandom came from. It’s sooo interesting! I just love the way fandoms can take a piece of source material and truly make it their own!
I definitely agree that is less stigmatized now a days than ever before, which makes a negative comment like that so surprising!
Hope you don’t have to deal with too many more, but don’t let them get ya down! Some people just want a reaction

thank you so much! lucky the comment wasn’t too crazy, and i didn’t let take it too personally. it mainly just reminded me that i wanted to talk more about why fanfic is great on my channel haha ☺️
