To anyone who it may concern, please follow this advice! I started shadowboxing and hitting a bag when I was about 12, and I didn't know how to punch correctly. As a result, after 2 years on and off punching wrong, about 80% of the cartilage in my right elbow has disintegrated from hyperextension and high stress. I had been pulling punches and bending my arm out. Learn how to punch correctly, and follow this advice. I learned how to punch from videos by Shane and by Michael Jai White. Get basic form down, and turn it into instinct. I am currently 16, and am living with pain in my elbow almost every day. I have lost about 5 degrees of range of motion in my right arm. You don't want this to happen to you. Trust me. Any time my friends wonder how I learned how to punch and kick and things like that, I tell them about this channel. Thank you fightTIPS and thank you Shane for this video.
Thanks for the heads up about the cartilage thing... I thought it was purely a muscle issue whenever it hurts. I'm gonna be way more careful now when it comes to punching with elbow pain.
Thank you. I'm sorry about your misfortune. Try massaging the elbows with castor oil every day. It helps with my knee pain. I'm going to take it extremely easy on the shadow-boxing.
2:08, Thanks for the explanation 👍. For anyone else out there, I once hurt my elbow tendon pretty bad in whiffing a jab. After icing my elbow and resting it for a couple of weeks, I found that I was turning my fist over too late during the jab. I started turning my shoulder into it a little more to take some of the stress off the elbow and it's been helping because I don't feel that tender burning sensation in my elbow anymore 👌.
Came back to this video for the fourth time lol, i keep think i have golfer/tennis elbow on my left arm but i think i finally find out that its actually tricep tendinitis, it does not rlly hurt but when i do pushups or when im punching, my elbow feels weird and i dun even chop my punches lol but shits hella annoying
Its not painful, and it wont affect my daily life but i have been ignoring and continuing with my boxing and work outs, i think i should start to let it heal b4 it gets serious
I wanna say thanks for this bro I just got done working out and panicked thinking I got a bad injury and found out I was turning my fist little to late as well thanks 😁🙏✝️❤️
Ah! I have this exact condition and I didn’t realise why or how to fix it. Thanks for the enlightening video, and that idea of a string on the ceiling is superb.
Bro I’m proud of you Shane i remember your page when you was just teaching people about street fight outside at the playground now to see the gym the logo the 2 million subscribers u have you really built ur brand i love it
The "punch along the pole" thing is a life saver, my punches were far from accurate and after only a few minutes of punching my elbows would hurt bad, the pipe thing forced control and man that control helps a *ton*
Really ingenious method to use a string! Kinda similar logic to how the human eye is only able to move smoothly from one side to the other when tracking a moving target - sometimes you need something tangible as a reference point.
I feel like I haven't commented on one of your videos in forever but I'm still watching. Keep doing your thing man and stay safe during this pandemic brother!
My advice would be turning the fist before full extinction, meaning you start with your thumb facing the ceiling and right before impact or full extinction you turn your fist where your thumb is facing the wall. So you start with a horizontal fist and end with a parallel fist, I hope I made it clear.
S. Oddity Ah.. well essentially you hang a rope across the room or space, then you tie a thin string coming from top downwards and ending at your head height. Next you punch a hole in a paper and tie that string into the paper so it’s hanging at head height. We do a lot of high kicks using this method to improve speed and try and kick the paper before the wind of our kick pushes it away. Furthermore the ultimate challenge is to punch through the paper!!
Years ago I saw a video of Mike Tyson shadow boxing with a tennis ball hanging from the ceiling. I've been doing that at home + double end ball for years. Im still waiting on your double end bag to go on sale to complete the setup!
I’ve done MMA for I think a little over 3 years now and I don’t think I’ve experienced elbow pain even after I took almost a year off. Now I come back after taking 5 months off and shadow box and have no elbow pain, I shadow box again and do and then I do it again and have elbow pain again. Kind of discouraging considering the fact I’ve been doing this for awhile and haven’t felt this, I realized I’m chopping sometimes when I jab and over extending with my right hand, I guess after a while off you develop some bad habits, I think after I shake this rust off and focus on technique for a couple days I’ll be back like nothing. Thanks for the video Shane. 💙
hey shane i have been using the string hanging for a few weeks now. i learned something very interesting using it. u can actually prefect your jab and straight punches and hooks. like learn how to get max power without using all your might and calking back/ telegraphing the punch. the string tells a story when u hit it!!!! very interesting!!!!! i can show u a demonstration if you would like! thanks for all the videos !!!!! :)
Modification: buy a kumbucha 20oz from Walmart. Drink/ empty it fill it with water. Tie string around the cap. I personally am using a pull up bar that hooks to my door and put the string and bottle in the center of it. But if you can hook to the ceiling in a open room you could add some avoid getting hit drills
Another good one Shane. Bruce Lee used paper. I use a tied 2 liter soda bottle with water in it...that way it rebounds quicker, and more realistic. Have to be a little controlled not to hit too hard though
I like to attach a sheet on the rope so i can put more power in it. I focus to put power inside the thickness of the sheet hooks isn t easy. I have permanent elbow pain (12 yrs) physioterapist teatched me to stretch the ligament under the elbow. Place hand on wall at shoulder height fingers down. Elbow should face down. Arm fully extended, stretch this ligament by getting both shoulders perpendicular to wall with the hand still on the wall. 5 sec 5 times.
Thanks so much!! What a great idea hanging a string. I taped it to the ceiling which gave me a huge area to punch and kick the string during a kickboxing youtube! Thanks! Great instructional video!
might be chopping punches (from elbow down), "send" it instead imagine pipeline starting from fist, throw it straight through without hitting the edges only connecting with target > shoot it straight < (ie use footwork to get in position to shoot it straight) thank you mr. fazen
Fight tips getting tips from someone that listened to fight tips tips. 😀 I going to try this. My elbow is messed up. I cant straighten my right arm for months now. I'm constantly stretching it straight. When I wake up in the morning its swollen same with my hand and forearm. Sucks!
I have a question, and this is off topic but I’d like an answer please. So I stud up against the school bully a year ago, because disrespected me and a few other people. I said to him “all you do is talk you never fight” and he said “ so what’s up ?” And I said “ alright square up then” then he said “ you were that pressed me “ is this a sign of him showing fear ? A weakness ? What is this ? I never heard someone say this to me before. Can someone please explain ?
A couple year ago I was hitting pads and Damaged my wrist, I got a sharp pain every time I threw anything the pain still comes back every now and then. Any advice ?
I get that you're supposed to keep your arm straight without hyperextending it, but how do you do that without bending your elbow? I hyperextend a lot when I punch (never have any elbow pain or wrist pain), but I keep getting told that my arm is not straight when I throw punches. I feel like if my arm is bent, then I'm not getting full extension. How do I get a straight arm with full extension without hyperextending my elbow?
I don't know... my technic is pretty correct but my elbows or rather muscles around elbow joints ache anyway. Thing is i use 18-20oz gloves for speed (bagwork, sparring, mitts or double end).
@@severusfloki5778 depending on your weight and what you are working on. In Columbia i saw guys around 200 pounds train with 12oz on. They were strong and hit hard but the speed (both hands and foot) just wasn't there. If they continued to train that way they would never get decent speed.
@@severusfloki5778 i am about same weight. I like 18oz. Make sure you dont 'swim' with your punches (straight out - straight back). I am about to get that 18oz Hayabusa t3. Great wrist support and overall performance. Heavier gloves in general train those small control muscles. I used to worry about staying cut but now i don't really look at fat and muscle as something dif from each other. Its all just dead weight that needs to be thrown into equation. Fat requires less energy. I mean, look at Andy Ruiz :) worry about relaxation and development of control muscles. Also legs are 80% of the action. Relax, breath, move!

I’m concerned too cuz I’m teaching myself without any real life instructor
Thanks for the heads up about the cartilage thing... I thought it was purely a muscle issue whenever it hurts. I'm gonna be way more careful now when it comes to punching with elbow pain.

Day 24 of quarantine: Shane starts to punch against a thread.

Wow that’s exactly what I needed mate. Cheers! Stay safe and healthy.

I was literally searching for a video on this topic today before you posted.
I know... 👀
Thanks Shane perfect timing. I'm having this exact problem. My elbow's been hurting for a few months now
Hope this helps, Michael!
Thank you my coach says I was “hyperextending” my jab and didn’t want to help me correct it so this is really helpful thank you
I was wondering why I had elbow pain while punching a bag I’m sure it was cause of this it feels so much more natural and better!!!
And I thought I was the only one has that hurting my arm

Chaos and Pain?
I myself am a Thai boxing and kickboxing coach and therefore I consider as a specialist that you do a cool job, respect
The "punch along the pole" thing is a life saver, my punches were far from accurate and after only a few minutes of punching my elbows would hurt bad, the pipe thing forced control and man that control helps a *ton*
Thank you Shane! Send it , dont bend it is an absolutely brilliant statement.
Omg shane you fix all of my problems in quarantine!🤦♂️god bless ya man
How the f*** did you know a noob like me was having these issues
I was a noob once, too! I've also worked with lots of beginners for years. Stick with it! 👍
Really ingenious method to use a string! Kinda similar logic to how the human eye is only able to move smoothly from one side to the other when tracking a moving target - sometimes you need something tangible as a reference point.
Ohhhh my I finally know why I get that pain thanks man
I feel like I haven't commented on one of your videos in forever but I'm still watching. Keep doing your thing man and stay safe during this pandemic brother!
Same to you, Orlando! Thanks for checking in 🙏
1:04 that’s actually really inspirational
I'm a novice, and I have elbow pain. This video is very very helpful. Thank you!!

The "corkscrew" motion definitely helps recruit the forearm muscles -- great point, Adam!
I've been looking for the answer to this problem for years!
You life saver Shane was having this problem earlier today💯💯
My coach used to do this with papers to build speed.
Ooo elaborate please, i enjoy diy gyms

0_o damn there are some interesting ways to build up speed
The Otaku Dragon Slayer indeed mate.
Karate kid type shit :)
You can also put a tennis ball on the end to add some weight so it comeback at you
I have so much elbow pain 😭😭

Sparring and missed that right hand, now my elbow troubles me every time I'm in the gym.
Best combat TH-camr EVER
This made everything about shadowboxing 10x more fun
Thanks for those nice boxing tips bro 👍🏻🔥

i just hyperextended my arm thanks for the video
very helpful. i hurt my elbow once. then I always subconsciously bend my arms when throwing punches and lose the distance.
Thanks for this tip Shane
Thanks so much!! What a great idea hanging a string. I taped it to the ceiling which gave me a huge area to punch and kick the string during a kickboxing youtube! Thanks! Great instructional video!
Also another thing is to make sure you turn your shoulder into it, usually a twist of the arm does the trick, but just watch that you don't over twist
might be chopping punches (from elbow down), "send" it instead
imagine pipeline starting from fist, throw it straight through without hitting the edges only connecting with target

thank you mr. fazen
I was born in Philadelphia Thanks Corey & Shane.
Always loved and appreciate your videos dude.
No ego, Only passion. 👍
Awesome video!! Very helpful! Can you do a video for elbow pain from
Hyper extension? Any tips
Or exercises etc.

Excellent tip. I usually do the same thing with TRX cables hanging from the monkey bars.
Shane how do I analyze fights to increase fight iq
James Garside watch the footwork, watch how they create angles, watch the combos, rewind and watch a sequence multiple times
A couple year ago I was hitting pads and Damaged my wrist, I got a sharp pain every time I threw anything the pain still comes back every now and then. Any advice ?
No wonder I always had really bad pains in my elbows after a shadow boxing workout
usually i get elbowed, punched, then im in pain
hey sir big fan....like the way you teach....would like to learn more from you....where to start.??
Cool video shane. Thanks for the tips. I have a question though. what do you think about flicker jabs?
I’ve never had this problem this is new to me lol but the string is a good idea
Could you please make another video on how to wrap your hands with the technique you currently use?
Nice video!
Thx so much man!
Damn, it was really awesome video
Very good Thanks 🙏
"Sent it don't bend it"

I remember when you taught us to tie our keys on our hand wraps and then practice head movement
SHANE WHAAAT ??? THANKS FOR THE PIN !!!
@Sundaysad times
Can you do a breakdown on Muhammad Ali’s footwork ??

konpoy Do the 18oz affect your stamina while sparring? I mean the up side I guess is that it’s harder to get a glove through and past your guard
Bro this is smart asf I put up like 4 shoe strings 😂😂💯🙌
Feels like I'm watching a click it or ticket video except just for fighting
Thank you sir. Sometimes I’m afraid to throw a big right straight cuz my elbow hurts
Hey shane need a video about peekaboo footwork and headmovements
I do this with the ceiling fan cord lol
Thank you sir
