- The in-depth story of how the infamous Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival (aka "Bull Island Festival") of 1972 turned into "the worst festival of all time".
It was billed as the "Woodstock of the Midwest" - a massive three-day festival featuring the biggest names in rock and roll. 300,000 eager fans made the pilgrimage to a marshy site near Evansville, Indiana, lured by the promise of iconic acts like Black Sabbath, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac.
They expected a laidback celebration of music, but things went horrifically off-script at the Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival. The event would, however, become infamous, not for its music though but as one of the most disastrous music festivals ever staged...

@@wattage2007 Think for a moment -- how many people out of 50 or 60,000 does it take to leave trash, or loot? It may be 5 percent of those who attend a concert. Note the Burning Man festivals - they always leave the places where they hold those without a speck of trash or damage.
Besides, rock concerts are big business operations. Their downsides are reflections of capitalism.
It's basically a one-time space so you need a lot of good solutions to minimize trash, and even then it gets tough to manage!
I am impressed. Just two dead? ... despite 300.000 ppl... it could been endlessly worse.
may be others were eaten?
There were probably more deaths. Disneyland started the practice of not including deaths of patrons when they were removed off-site and declared dead at a hospital. Keeps comp figures down & avoids negative publicity. It is still used today - Astro world had more, but again they were declared off site. It costs the insurance company, artist & organiser less money. Not so good for the injured or the deceased, however!!
Did they drown in one of the 6 toilets?
Woodstock 99 had zero deaths, if I remember correctly? That was a huge dumpster fire as well.

The epitome of "imagine the smell"
Smells like raw, human shit and horrific body odor.
'A hippie is someone who looks likes Tarzan, walks like Jane and smells like Cheetah'
It's an old saying but I've got nothing against them!
That was my first thought. My second thought was "imagine the nasty stench of B.O. & crotch rot when opening a tent from drug fueled (& sober) hippie sex". Hell, one probably didn't even need to open a tent, the whole damn grounds probably smelled like excrement, B.O. and crotch rot for miles and miles.

If each person has 1 minute in the restroom it'll only take 209 days for everyone to get a turn.
Your pesky math had no power over those promoters!
Idk how you calculated that, but it should be 35 days
300000people/6toilets/24hours/60mins = around 35days
@@sandraaiden8587 He neglected to factor in that there were 6 toilets, so his calculation was 300,000/60mins/24hrs.
@@feponcio that should give around 180 days tho
@@sandraaiden8587 If you multiply 30x6, then you get 180. But remember that your correct answer was 35 days (approx.) not 30 days. So you should be multiplying 35x6.
I was there, age 17. This is mostly accurate and has more pictures and video than I've seen anywhere else, but there were a few differences from the description. One is the toilet situation. People on the outer edges may have walked into the woods but for the most part everyone just dug a hole where they sat, did their business, and filled it back in. They left out a few of the more bizarre things going on too, such as all of the people having sex on the ground in the middle of the crowd and people just walking around naked.
As I understand it, the open sex & nudity happened (and still does) at other such events. What horrifies me, though, is that having sex in such unsanitary conditions is a recipe for severe illness!

The thing that goes swept under the rug at these events is the amount of sexual assaults.
Very true
I've met women who told me of recollections of waking up from drug induced unconsciousness to find one or more males on top of them or groping them. And not necessarily at big events, but also at small parties. What we have been told to think of as "progressive" and "enlightened" often is not at all. The patriarchal system wears many facades.

I went to a free concert that was organized at the last minute back in November of 1991 in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. 300, 000+ people showed up in memorial of iconic Bay Area concert promoter, Bill Graham, nine days after he died tragically in a helicopter crash. The 'Indian Summer' weather could not have been better and multiple HUGE acts including the Grateful Dead, Robin Williams, and Journey performed. It was an all day event starting at 10:00 AM. Food was largely scarce save for one little neighborhood grocery store across the street that quickly sold out of EVERYTHING. However, event had PLENTY OF PORTA POTTIES and medical tents to service that enormous crowd. It was a GREAT event despite my having had no sleep the night before, and partying all day. Great memory to have in light of the tragic circumstances which inspired the concert.
You mention an Indian summer. Yet how can there be an Indian summer if there is no winter in San Francisco?
@@wokeeye6441it’s a San Francisco weather thing. Like Mark Twain said, “The coldest winter I ever had was summer in San Francisco.” It gets cold there so an Indian Summer’s possible.

I like how these hippies talk about peace and love but they all turn into rats when pressed for simple comforts.
Yes, that's what a breakdown in society does.
This IS a breakdown in society. If this had been a survivalist festival it would've been a ball and a biscuit. These people had no idea how to survive despite living a lifestyle that has become synonymous with living in unity with the planet.
I know it's easy to say but why didn't more of them leave after so many bands didn't go up? They wanted to get fucked up and do fucked up shit. Hippies suck. 😂
@@alaeriia01Society would breakdown as it is now with only six toilets. 🤦

Yea the stuff readily available at any Starbucks.
*Can't say I feel sorry for the attendees. They ruined it for themselves by destroying 300 toilets, tweaking, looting, and stealing*
The BBQ must have been shitty!
Oh that was the authentic hippie experience. Happened just about every time hippies gathered anywhere in the world.
What they didn't mention here, was the fast spreading of several STD's I'm sure happened as well. A woman once told me, that she had 5 different ones at the same time at 16, after having hitchhiked randomly around in Europe in the summer of 1970.
To be fair, this is pre-hindsight
Not saying it's anything good; we just have the infrastructure and ideas that can make these not more violent than actual metal/punk fests
300 toilets still wouldn't have been enough. Especially if you have no way to empty them (the roads were clogged so trucks to pump the port a potties weren't going to get there). This is all on the organizers.
An unplanned festival in a city might be fine. City infrastructure can take a lot of the strain. But once you're in the middle of nowhere, you have to provide *EVERYTHING.*
Yeah the main problems I could think of for having it poorly planned and managed in a city instead of a large rural open space would be rioting damage, or a crush incident, like happened with the Love Parade dance festival in Duisburg, Germany in 2010. But even that latter one would depend on the geography/infrastructure quirks of the urban area itself, and chance.
People are also you know mostly incompetent so if there's not a bunch of super obvious infrastructure they'll just riot 😂
the city would never allow it as these hippies where basicly savage animals that destroy everything in their path
Defo . A point lots of sheltered folk might not realise
Depends on the city.
Basically, never underestimate the stupidity of humans, or visitors will use 300 wooden toilets as firewood instead of as toilets, and choose to poop out in a field. I'm not saying the organisers wasn't to blame, they definitely deserve the biggest blame, but I don't get how the presumable stench from the poop field alone didn't make people go home. And how did some visitors react to finding out that there was no more food in some food trucks? They torched them, as if that would solve their food shortage. On top of that, some people took things in their own hands, and chose to illegally slaughter a nearby cow to get food, rather than realise that maybe it was time to go home. Madness.
100% !
One word: Drugs (and to add more words....more than just a little MJ....)
Its because hippies are stupid af, their brains already not existent after all the drug and cannabis abuse… I mean look at this crowd, half of them look like cavemen or apes
Yeah hippies are trash. Look at the aftermath of any protest. Remember "the chaz"? Ruined a whole block
And they burned their source of food.

Woodstock was unforgettable. This was unforgivable. People need to stop trying to be better than Woodstock. Every event that advertises to be “bigger and better than Woodstock” always turns into chaos…

This was way worse brother 😂 it's quite obvious you don't I ow much about anything 😂
Unless it takes place at a dedicated, permanent concert site, most outdoor rock music festivals were for the birds. Most of the people that I knew who attended Woodstock hated it. These middle class kids were used to comfort----me too. I once attended a festival that featured Ike & Tina Turner and ten minutes into their set, a huge thunderstorm ended the whole shebang. There was a small pond on the site and people used it as a giant swimming hole and commode. Thousands of cars got stuck in the muddy field that was used as a parking lot. The car I rode in was one of them, and it took ten hours to get it out. The music was O.K. but it wasn't worth all of the problems.
I honestly dont understand why people torture themselves with these festivals, I'd rather go out camping in nature before i camp with 300000 unwashed hippies.
Yeah. Even with relatively civilized sites like wineries within a suburban area and just a one-off show, you can get bad problems. I remember one Robbie Williams concert held at a winery in my city, where the traffic just didn't move. The people who had taken the complementary buses from the nearest train station were caught in the traffic jam, ended off walking several Kilometers on foot and barely arrived in time to see the main act. Some people who had parked at the venue waited in their cars for 5 hours to be able to even get out of the carpark afterward.
And that's in a city, with a single main act. The amount that can go wrong with a multi-day festival in the wilderness is just compounded.
I loooove watching concerts from the comfort of my home.
title is truly a worse fate than death

It's kinda hilarious how only organizers are blamed when 80% of things are on the junkies. They caused violence, they overdosed, they dismantled the toilets..
The violence was probably an abject fury at the lack of organisation and not hearing the bands they paid to see. I'm assuming it was a cold part of the year (it rained?) so people tried to stay warm, when maybe the organisers should have considered a different time of year or warmer place; also, there should have been proper security to kick out anyone vandalizing the infrastructure.
The overdoses are not strictly the organisers fault necessarily, but it's interesting that they had pill testing; we keep getting told that pill testing at festivals would prevent overdoses, but I've never believed it and it's possible it contributed to a false sense of safety in the drug abusers.
*"With thousands of people taking to the Wabash River to bathe."* - With only six toilets for 300,000 people, I'll bet "bathing" wasn't the sole motivation for jumping in the river that day.
2:14 - "REO *SPEEDWAGOM"*
It also says Nazerath lol So unprofessional from the beginning
Seven toilets. Don't forget the grand piano
I think I might have suggested this to you. I have lived in Evansville since 77(I was 2 yrs old) and you would think that it would be a local legend but I never heard about it till I stumbled across something online about it.
Great how the promoters just fly away.
This is like an accidental experiment to see what humans will do/resort to when in the mass together without structure or government. Whether it be following, hysteria, rage, freedom, dance etc its a great way to analyze how mass amounts of people react under extreme stress and frustration.
and drug-addled stupidity.
I'd say it wouldn't make for a particularly good one unless you specifically wanted a behavioural model for smelly hippies as the crowd does not exactly make for a good cross section of society.
And this is why I don't go NEAR music festivals.
The OG Fyre Festival.
It’s pretty hard to feel sorry for the people having to share 6 toilets when there were 300 wooden ones and they used them for fireword. How can you sympathise with those involved with doing such things insane and disgraceful things? Same with looting and burning the food stall when you’ve almost run out of food. I imagine it was a case of “well I can’t afford the crazy prices they are charging and was too disorganised to bring any food with me, so I will make sure nobody eats”. I do feel for those who just wanted to go and listen to bands, but it sounds like a lot of them behaved like animals and had no morals at all. They then burned the states and looted cars from others who were parked there.
I’ve been at festivals in the 90’s and 00’s that had 2 feet high human waste piles in the Biffy’s. Also in gas station bathrooms around the venues. Can’t get these images out of your mind.
Oh shit! 😂
So they complained about having few toilets... After they took down the wooden toilets?
I can't even... They were asking for this. You can't fix stupid.
Yeah, that seems a bit strange.
Have that image in my head … someone taking a dump whilst others are dismantling the loo … 🚽
They wanted the wood to keep warm. The organizer should be responsible for not providing bonfires to the entitled hippies
God I love living not even 30 minutes from where this happened. Love hearing the stories of this chaos.
Turd fields lol😂. Sounds lovely.
Can you imagine … morning sunrise … fog slowly rising from the ‘Fields of Turd’ …
This festival gave inspiration for the popular board game _Hungry Hungry Hippies_
6 toilets for 300,000 visitors... so.. a standard Phish concert.
Except better music for the festival
there was more but the event goers turned them into firewood
Zip to Zap was much smaller, but just as crazy. National Guard chased us out of town. 1969 in ND.
Where do you hide money from a hippy? Under a bar of soap.
Their biggest mistake was booking the acts before they had a place for them to perform, especially after Evansville was still angry about the Freedom Fest fallout. And the restraining orders from counties didn't help matters. It would have been easier to cancel and return all of the money.
No wonder people hated these type of crowd...
This is the best video on TH-cam.
I wanna know how the 'waste' even got 2 feet above the seat
Yeah, you'd think after it reached 1 inch, the fields would be looking infinitely more appealing.
They were pooping while standing up
Sounds like a real Shitty situation to me!!
Imagine the anxiety poops and the dread of needing to go. This was an outbreak of severe gastroenteritis waiting to happen.🤢🤮Edit…what’s the point of going somewhere, putting up with all the hassle of a festival, being right there with musicians you’ve wanted to see, then getting totally wasted? If you’re going to do it you might as well save money and do it at home.
I...have...no...words. 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
Ahh yes, “peaceful hippies.” 😂
How were the doors supposed to preform in 1972 when Jim Morrison died in 1971 ?
Hologram!
THE DOORS made two albums after Jim died. You didn't know that????
Hold on. Loss of livestock due to marijuana inhalation?? 🤔
Yeah, that's milkin' it....
even nowadays enough people would believe that.
hahhahahahahhahahhahahahaha
it ends up looking like the result of one of Nikocados "Hot spicy chicken wing" mukbangs...
😳😱the horror
Best comment :D
Figuring each person spent 2 minutes using the porta potty, it would be 69 days before everyone got a single chance to use one.
Nothing more dangerous than a *HUNGRY HIPPIE* lol...
The cows did a much better job keeping that piece of land green & fertile. While humans, who are so "evolved", only took 3 days to destroy it.
I’m wondering how ONLY 2 people died.
How? Like seriously, HOW?
👍😂
I wouldn't attend an outdoor concert under the best of circumstances. What a hell hole.
I'm sure misspelling "REO Speedwagon" on the flyer didn't help either!
As soon as I read the title I thought "Fuck that I'd just shit myself"
Seems like plenty of people had the same thoughts 😭
