It's live. This TV show was widely known for 1 take 1 shot to nail it, with no going back to overdub. What u see is what happened. Sepultura did this show back in 1996, I believe

Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002. And they are one of the biggest, heaviest and most important bands in the scene. By the way his performance was recorded in 2004. So that is 19 years ago not 17 :) And the singer Simone Simone was 19 years old here. She had joined them as lead singer two years earlier at only 17 years old.

Yes this is a live show on Dutch TV in 2004, not long after they released their first album

Love that song, my first encounter with Epica was WGT 2004 in Leipzig, and that song stood out to me.

This studio concert was at the very beginning of the band's existence, at that time the band was about two years old or less. And this song became the group's first single. At the moment, the group is over 20 years old and over 20 years they have become real professionals and watching their live shows is a real pleasure. They are very cool. The sound has also changed, the music has become more complex, multi-layered and technical. Just check out some of their latest music or live performances. Highest level

Hi Casey, this one is always a winner, a sci-fi theme about the machines taking over the world,
and an amazing video too 🙃

Mark’s growls now are completely different and have improved hugely. This was the first song they wrote after forming in 2002.
Simone started classical training when she was 15 and joined Epica aged 17 (she was Mark’s girlfriend at that time).
The backing singer with the long blonde hair is Amanda Somerville, she was Simone’s vocal coach at that time (not on the classical side but helping her develop her pop/rock style). The singer next to Amanda with the black hair goes on to marry Coen Janssen, the keyboard player and still does backing vocals on Epica’s albums today.
This was part of a live studio session, recorded for a Dutch TV program.
It’s worth listening to the version of this song for their Omega Alive live stream in 2021 to see how they have progressed. Here is the link… th-cam.com/video/z8DWFOk5EwE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oR0L0LASAXvIIWln

I was coming here to say almost the same thing. Mark's growls and Simone's voice have completely changed over the years. I second that you should do the omega alive version, although I'm pretty sure that one of the next AFAS LIVE releases it's going to be Cry For The Moon, there is no official live yet which is surprising. You can find some live performances in TH-cam but there's no official live if you know what I mean. For now the Omega Alive performance will suffice. Hope you do it. And of course you should do more of their newer songs

Drummers usually have separation when playing with an orchestra, usually plexiglass. Here they don't. Arien is out there with them so he has to "tap it" in order not to overwhelm.

You mentioned the harsh vocals needing work. I would recommend listening to the version of "Cry for the Moon" from Omega Alive, both Simone and Mark have improved drasticly and really found their own styles of vocals.
There has been 3 line-up changes since they started, swapping the drummer, lead guitarist and bass player. The current lineup has been together for more than a decade, and it really shows when you see them live. I saw them live for the first time in January this year in Copenhagen (was supposed to have been in 2020), and in a few weeks I will be traveling to the Netherlands to see them (and other bands) again. They are absolutely amazing live.

One of Epica earliest songs still sounds as good if not better over 20 years later. Baby Epica. Check out the 2023 live Exit festival version on YT to bring it right up to date for comparison.

Welcome to Epica man. You have no idea what you’ve found. Epica is truly an epic band.
This song was Epica’s first single from 21 years ago and this performance is from 2 years later.
This is a nostalgic piece that is still played live nowadays.
Try to listen to something newer to get a clue how far they evolved -
Epica - The Skeleton Key - Omega Alive
Epica - Consign to Oblivion - live at the Zenith (one of their older songs, performance from 2016)
Epica - Kingdom of Heaven part 3 - Omega Alive (one of their epic masterpieces)
Epica’s albums are recorded with full orchestra and choir, children choir and even some exotic instruments - about 150 musicians took part in the recording of their 8th album Omega, released in 2021.

Trained voices usually don't reach their full capability until their early 30s. Simone was 19 here. This is just hint of what she would later be capable of, as you have seen from more recent clips. But this is still one of my favorite youtube clips by them. Thanks for checking it out. Oh, the blonde singer (one of her two main backing vocalists) is Amanda Somerville, a major figure in metal vocals who was one of Simone's coaches.

There are live performances from this song to be found on YT. They are all very good and you can hear the development in both their voices and their musical abilities. Check Epica live wherever and you'll find out. Welcome to this rabbit hole. Rock on!

Simone Simons = the Avenging Angel still in her teens. Stunning choir made up of metal and opera singers. I think 8 in the choir.

This is great stuff. Several years ago I send this video to a bunch of people and got zero response. Bunch of losers. It's in better hands here. I first saw Epica when they opened for Kamelot in about 2007. Been a fan ever since. It's true that from a 2023 perspective the whole performance could be beefed up a lot, but as an early attempt working with an orchestra, it stands well

    Bloody heavy subject.

    (and yep one shot)
    Anyways, always stays true !

Dude, stop nitpicking. You have no authority. You're merely a consumer who technically make profit out of musicians. Mind you, that drummer is not a part of Epica anymore, and their current drummer is probably one of the best drummers in metal out there. Geez, i can't, with these pretentious know-it-all reactors whose life will probably peak here on the Internet.

Well, Americans are so used to computer generated autotuned commercial soleless pop they have to pick on real singing and drumming. I suppose Justin Bieber is the go to superstar?
