Epica ( Dutch band) has a much, much harder edge than bands like Nightwish, especially the last 5 albums. Therefore hard to compare nowadays. Epica is in a league of it's own. The band consists of 6 members ( three line up changes through the years) and they incorporate choirs and orchestra in basically every song. The guitar player growling is the founder of the band, Mark Jansen. Lead singer is dutch soprano Simone Simons who during this recording was about 19 years old. After they released their debut album The Phantom Agony a dutch tv presenter from a music program was so enthousiastic about their music that in that tv program they were invited to play that whole album live, it was recorded to be released on dvd later that year. ( 2004) This is a video from that recording.

Simone Simmons got a amazing voice, its in my opinion her and Floor (nw) that are the best voices in symfonic metal these days, and well to me in the world..
The growler Mark Jansen is the founder of Epica, and also write a lot of the lyrics, but Simone do write a lot to, and the other bands members sometimes to.. Epica became one of my absolute favorite bands about 3 years ago, when i really started to listen to them, and i have done so ever since, a song catalog full of great songs, and are just a amazing live band..
Mark Jansen will often represent the dark charecter in the song, and Simone will represnt light, and third player is the choir, who might often speak for the public.. that is not for all songs, but a common Epica way of doing it.. more Epica, yes thanks!!

Shortly after their debut album in ‘04 they released this dvd. There is also a dvd+cd version. I remember I emailed Simone to help me fill out the order form bc it was in Dutch. This was before they took off in popularity. She helped me and said if I don’t receive it, let her know, and she’ll send one to me personally. The Phantom Agony is still my favorite Epica album. She’s a mezzo soprano here but now she is a soprano.

This is a recording from a Dutch legendary tv program called the "2 meter sessions" (the actual length of the presenter). They usually invited well known artist and arranged a studio, and then gave the artists the freedom to records their songs in a way that a normal commercial recordstudio would not allow them to. Even though the songs are recorded in a studio for the best result it is totally live and unedited, wich was a trademark of the show. The only exception they ever made to them inviting renowned artists was for Epica. The presenter received their debut album from the record company which is not unusual in the business. When he listend to it he was so impressed that he went over to the producer and said "you have to listen to this". This resulted in 1 hour special (released on dvd/cd) and this was one of the clips. They were all very young is indeed (Simone had just finished her vocal lessons). One of the people singing in the choir was one of her vocal coaches (the blond woman called Amanda Somerville). If you watch the whole hour you see that she is very proud of her pupil and gives her some encouraging signals. The string sections in the studio were all conservatory musicians who had no prior knowledge of the music they were going to play except for the papers in front of them. The dvd has been sold out as you can imagine. I bought my copy second hand for 50 euro's but it worth every penny.
Another great song from this recording is "Feint". It is about the assassination of a Dutch politician (Pim Fortuyn) that had a big on society and that could have been our next PM at the time this came out. Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/FNTaIz5cABY/w-d-xo.html .

I love it!!! Imagine experiencing that one live wow. I remembered that song, must have heard it a looong time agoo somewhere, also knew of Epica, but thanks for connecting the song to the band for me, finally :D Gave me Noumena/Gallowbraid/Agalloch vibes when he growled and she began singing beautifully again. Love the face he makes when growling, like "urgh that was just too beautiful here have a dose of THIS". I guess as a set of genres I'd throw my loving for the whole thing into symphonic/melodic/atmospheric folk/gothic/dark/black/death metal idk lol, but that whole style of music is just great imo.
Oh yeah that's right, her voice reminds of Evanescence at times (well now I have to watch the DK rap/Evanescence mash up again) ^^
Now I listened to it again, this time focusing on the lyrics a bit more, and they're giving me chills, wow they're good
Man, came back to this video again, having watched it many times now - there's just so much for me to take in. Watching it the first time I was transfixed by the performance, but then jumping off to re-search and check the bands coming to mind and genres for reference. So was partly distracted by and pause-play-pausing because of that. Then watching only the performance with full attention again, listening to the lyrics while reading them along. Then a few times more to really feel the lyrics, their fantastic delivery, and grand composition along them. Then watching your video again to read everything I missed because of being too distracted as well as focused on the performance, and your reaction. Agree with much (all? all) of what you wrote ('n said) - not gonna reiterate all you wrote :D but e.g. yes great camera work, and yeah I have not thought about it I think ever, but thinking back on it, singing in a choir (especially for an audience) - it really is a powerful, unifying experience - I have difficulty truly capturing that experience with an adjective without sounding vague and pretentious, maybe it'll eventually come to me. Oh it's like a continual casting of an AOE magic spell where each singer is casting his own "little" magic, directing it forward and all of them merging into one big magic vector! Put the concept of that sentence into an adjective - magical. Well sounds vague and pretentious (if you're judgmentally inclined) lol, but true. And I've to smile and chuckle each time I see the growler and the reaction of the lead singer and other singer to him, and again when he finishes his growls with a "yaaahhrRWAH!" where you also chuckled. An abrupt ending to the song makes sense to me after reading the lyrics, like "We've said all that needs to be said." Yes and now on to playing it many more times in my head as well as on YT in the future *cue adventurous music - the part in that song with the "Ha~!"s*

They also have an epic (no pun intended) version of Hall of the Mountain King. Some of my favorite songs from them are Angels, Deceiver of Fools, Faster, Forsaken, Ice Queen, Mother Earth, Our Solemn Hour, Sinead, Stand my Ground, The Cross, The Howling, The Other Half (Of Me), The Truth Beneath the Rose, Iron, What Have you Done, Memories, Jillian (I'd Give my Heart), Frozen....well I could go on and on....so many great songs, same with a number of bands from the genre.

Also a quick suggestion, Epica songs (much like Nightwish) are heavy into lyrics, its worth reading the lyrics and understanding the song before listening. The growls are very heavy with great meaningful impact but sometimes are hard to understand.

Another vote for "Rivers" from their latest album. Mange tak! At least two of those female backing singers are great lead vocalists in their own right! Amanda Sommerville, blonde, was Simone's vocal coach. I should know the other lady, dark hair next to Amanda, but her name escapes me for the moment. They were still known as Sahara Dust when they made this. They took "Epica" as their name when they were signed and it comes from the title of a Kamelot album. Their sound shows After Forever and Nighwish influences.

Epica is a 6-member metal band but they work with orchestra and choir like Nightwish. They are in a similar 'symphonic metal' genre but they have a different style, usually more heavy guitars, harsh vocals and a prominent use of choirs.
The 'beauty and beast' style with the male growls and the beautiful female operatic voice they use in most songs but not all of them.
Also the lyrics are more political, this song for instance is about pedophilia in churches.
For a full live performance, Consign to Oblivion live at Zenith is one of the most recommended songs, sort of like their "Ghost Love Score"... otherwise they have a show called 'Retrospect', commemorative of their 10 years which they brought an orchestra live, it's a 3-hour setlist with most of their greatest songs, they also invited Floor as a guest for 2 tracks.

    Hello from Brazil.
This song is on the band's first album.
So Marc Jansen (sang growls) left After Forever (Floor Jansen's first band) he created Epica and this would be a continuation of After Forever's first two albums.
Imagine that it would be Floor and not Simone. We all won, but After Forever became prog metal with symphonic. Even the inserts and back cover are similar to the Prison of Desire (first from the AF).

You can pick any one or multiple from each album. All I ask is please don't do Sancta Terra or Stabat Mater Dolorosa. They don't represent Epica at all. They are great songs but they don't represent Epica at all but the ones I listed do. I like the reaction it was great.
