Overall the FJ is a fantastic truck but they do have a few minor issues that are worth watching out for.

i just had this happen to my 07 FJ. I don’t live in a rust belt and have very little rust on the undercarriage of mine so this dangerous occurrence surprised me. Just before taking a rough road trip I looked under the rig and discovered the rear retainer strap on the gas tank had rusted and snapped the tank was sagging down. I would recommend checking this when vehicle shopping or on every one that owns one and drives the roads. The dealer wants $200 for the pair but they can be purchased for as little as $50 a pair.

anotherspot to check for rust etc is the gutter above the rear door window. Fills with crap and can cause rust and is hard to clean without opening. You cant inspect it without opening the rear window.

Keep the content going mate. Did you change over all the pulleys or just the top one?
I changed all the idler pulleys three of them from memory, did it in a caravan park in Alice Springs because the old ones just died, too much dust and started to make noise and wobble. Had to use the repco pulleys are the dealer I Alice didn’t have any. They have been fine so far. Just be careful if your doing it yourself. One of the bolts has a reverse thread. I changed the serpentine belt at the same time.
The tensioning pulley wasn’t replaced as it was and still is ok but really expensive.
Just got my 2008 fj few days ago few problems, was neglected. Front brakes and rotors, the door check, u joints, and broken clips on front windshield upper trim. With 190,000 mile still runs like new!
They are an awesome Rig that’s for sure 🤙🏼
Yup. I just bought a 2008 base model last Saturday 174,000 miles, almost Mint Condition, but needs a little tiny bit of work. I really love these little trucks.

@@OutbackTouring I am in the buying process. Probably signing the titles tomorrow but doing overseas money transfer so it takes a couple of days.
Buying a 2010 base. Looked at a 2008 Trail Teams but the rust scared me away and the 2010 has the new engine and stuff so is probably better for me. Has 127K US miles but I dont think that should be a problem. It will come detailed and serviced but will change all fluids anyway just to make sure.

Hey mate, nice vid, thanks. Wondering what height lift you have? Looks great. I have a TJM bar in the shed Im about to put on but will also need to upgrade my springs. Any idea what rate springs you are running up front? Cheers
My front shocks and springs are ICON .
Front springs are 317kg, see link below.
However, I can adjust the hight up and down by adjusting the pre-load on the springs. I remember when I fitted the bar and winch I had to add more pre- load pressure to the spring.
Maybe have a chat to Dobbinson, I’m happy with the rear setup on the FJ.

It’s a two inch lift with standard size Micky Thompson ATZ’s.

@@OutbackTouring Thanks mate, I have Dobinsons now, monotubes without the RR's and have cranked them up as far as I can and with 580lb springs Ive lost 25mm since adding dual batteries and winch and in bar winch cradle. Looking at maybe using Kings progressives rather than Dobinson fixed rate to get it back up again
@@1Coolbanana sheesh, yeah sounds like you need a heavier spring.
@@OutbackTouring I was expecting that, when I first got the car it was dead stock and I put a lift on. Been slowly working on it adding stuff and as expected, its sagged accordingly, so yeah, looking at the different options to keep things comfy but get it back up high :-)
Hi, I tow a pop up camper trailer and have been thinking about having the torque converter lockup kit fitted....is there a particular brand you recommend?
I’ve fitted the wholesale Automatics kit. Works great except the instructions aren’t the best if your fitting it yourself. Just be aware you loose torque as the converter is locked and the engine can’t ride up on the converter. So have to unlock it to get the torque back. However the lockup is great on long flat stretches of road.
@@OutbackTouring Plenty of long straight stretches when you're touring around the country! Will also look at getting the transmission oil cooler fitted as well
@@michaelivory7606 if we ever get out of lockdown that is 🙃 Transmission cooler is definitely worthwhile upgrade.
Frame rust
I’m unaware of frame rust in Australia, I do mention it but I think it’s more of a problem in the US.
@Outback Touring I didn't take that into consideration. Unfortunately, it is a big problem in US, mostly Northern states that get snow. I have wanted an FJ for a long time. I finally found the one I wanted. A beautiful 14' Army Green, that looked like it just came off Showroom floor. Unfortunately when dealer put it on a lift, I was not happy at all....almost the whole chassis had rust. I didn't think at the time, to ask for a rubber hammer to start knocking around to see how bad it was. They were asking $35,000 and it has 71k miles. I was willing to pay that till I saw undercarriage. They swore that frame was inspected and was ok. I can hardly believe that...oh well!
Such a shame, keep looking, they are worth the wait. Check the tops of the doors too like I show in the vid.
