  • The castle, a motte and bailey was founded by Picard, a follower of Bernard de Neufmarché in the 12th century. Picard's son, Roger Picard I, replaced the motte with a shell keep. By about 1230 a tall cylindrical keep was added to the inside of the shell keep, possibly by his great-grandson, Roger Picard II. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Picards tired of loving in a cramped castle, and so the north range of Tretower Court was built.
    They sit in the village of Tretower, near Crickhowell in modern-day Powys, previously within the historical county of Breconshire or Brecknockshire.

    At the opening of the film Ironclad, you can see a mock-up of what this castle may have looked like.

    The well built barn across the road from the court’s entrance, has as of 2023, been opened as a restaurant, (Wed-Sat).
    The castle’s bailey wasn’t unique but was unusual, being a triangle, with the keep near one corner.

    Love your channel! These are so fascinating to me! I read Akashic records and I know they can be read for a place, but I've only read for people. I'd love to try for a castle

      Yes, we managed to film this one on a nice warm day. It was lovely there. We aren't putting the films up in the order we filmed them so next week you can see us in big coats and silly hats again. 😀

    8:35 wellllll, the architecture changed after the Crusades. Round towers don't have corners which are a weak spot that siege weapons could focus on and potentially bring down. Yes, i'm sure that being contemporary was seen as an important status symbol and may have been the primary motivation for many castle owners, but it was part of the ebb and flow of the medieval arms race.

      As for the little cubby-holes, I recall the bloke who gave us the tour saying they were 'garderobes', a combination toilet/wardrobe. And later used to hide priests during the reformation, I think.

      You would think I would learn to watch the whole thing before commenting, but alas, no.

      It's easily done. I often tell the telly who done it in murder mysteries. I am often wrong about that though. It's never the butler.

    I love the information, but I would have liked to see less of you and more of the house. The camera is moving so fast (and with you in the way of the view!) that I had to pause every few seconds to take it in. Also... the tiny room ""with the seat thingy"" is indeed a garderobe - a toilet. In the 14th cent, any respectable wealthy manor had them, as did castles. If there wasnt a moat or river under it, there would have been stone troughs, like gutters, that the rain would wash, theoretically. Alternatively, there might be a barrel at the bottom. The waste would likely be used for gardening.

    • @MostlyCastles
      @MostlyCastles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We shall bear that in mind in the future 🙂
      Didn’t know about the trough/ barrel- thank you for that!
