With "Home" and "Away" at the top of the screen, both set to zero at the very beginning, but the numbers increasing into the hundreds as you reach the later missions.
Despite the hillside filling with more and more little white headstones, still those little guys march round the bend and queue patiently to be recruited.
It meant absolutely nothing to me as a teenage boy, but now as a 40 year old man, the lesson is so very clear, yet it's one which we never ever learn from.
A true masterpiece in gaming.

In the 3DO version of Cannon Foddder, all the names are different. I suspect there's a hidden mission in Red Alert where you travel back to the 3DO timeline and make the squad miss their train, thus saving them from the horrors of pixelated warfare.
I had a playthrough where Stoo actually survived as a general!

I first listened to this performance at work and was grateful that it was the end of the day and most people had gone home because otherwise I would have had to try harder to hide my tears.
I had no idea of the backstory of this song until now, more than 30 years after the game came out. It gives the game a whole new level of poignance I was unaware of.
To this day I'm not sure another game has been produced like Cannon Fodder. Truly a standout game and the combination of humour and sincerity/gravitas helped mark it as such.
