  • This video is recorded on Calgary Transit #1074, a 1980 GM Fishbowl on rt.299 which runs between Brentwood LRT station and the Abour Lake neighborhood. This route includes a short highway section, which is the first part of this recording of the bus running at approximately 90km/h! The second part of the video is recorded as the bus does lots of hill-climbings at the beautiful Abour Lake neighborhood.

Love that 2 stroke Detroit Diesel sound… brings back a lot of memories.

I miss this bus! Soft and awesome seats! A lot of memories growing up riding these to school and with my parents to go to work!

wow, does this ever bring back memories. Sounds I'll never forget as I rode the route 54 Edgemont throughout many of my school years, usually in one of these GMC busses!

Well said. I cannot agree with you more. These old fishbowls were common in New York City and Boston and I took them as a kid well into my teens. I miss them.

It appears to be filmed in late 2007.
Yes, as of August 2009 there's still many of these buses around in Calgary. You might see one every second day or so, but they're around. Sort of like Checker Cabs eh?

Montreal retired them all back in 2002, but a few of them were spared before that thankfully. We have 4 in our collection and a private collector has one other. I see this Calgary bus has quite a few modern bus features, like the destination box in the rear, the stop request in the front and the plastic wall behind the driver. Montreal left them almost original from when they first got them. But I like you kept the cushiony seats. Very New Lookish! The sound is a bit deeper than ours was though.

@Kaynos - Yes. Calgary still has 105 Fishbowls in operation. They only come out during the peak hours normally though. We still have 117 MCI Classics as well.

There are some hard-core bus fanatics on this site. Some of you even have favorite engines and engine noises!
One advantage of these buses is that they don't seem to get stuck in snow as easily as those low-floor buses.

I have to move to Canada to kick it with these real buses like New Looks like this and MCI Classics, they're my favorites. I miss these buses in Chicago and New York City

@qwandiddy - Well, Calgary still has 104 Fishbowls remaining in service and they are still fixing some of them up with rebuilt engines and body work. How long they will be around for is hard to know. 40 Nova LFS forty footers are to start arriving next month and 30 for next year. It is unknown how many are for replacement or expansion of any sort at this time.

nice little ride. Interior lights should be off, but i guess its the law to run headlights on in Canada.

It sure would be nice if Calgary Transit kept these buses! I don't know if you've ever taken the 301 in the winter, but the heating in the new buses is almost non-existent. In these old buses you almost roast (which is a h*ll of a lot better than freezing!
Every so often one of these will show up for the 301, and then I know it's going to be a great day.

ClassicTVMan1981X. Them fishbowls need that 4-stroke AT with that turbo.

  • @ford9572
    @ford9572 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well maybe some Canadian Fishbowls were powered by modified 3-71s, I'm not sure.

  • @ford9572
    @ford9572 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@hallosuxforlife, Sorry to tell you this, But I don't think GM ever used 3-71s on the New Look Fishbowls, I seriously doubt that a 3-71 would have enough torque to move a 40 foot Fishbowl, GM first used 6V71s then 8V71s and then 6V92s I have book on them and there's no mention in there of any Fishbowl being powered by a 3-71, Sorry to bust your balls there Buddy!!
