  • A playthrough of Data East's 1992 platforming shoot 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Atomic Runner.
Atomic Runner is a port of a late 80s Data East coin-op that was pretty unique in its setup and control scheme, much like its DECO stablemate Midnight Resistance. Also like Midnight Resistance, it's an excellent port that sees a few upgrades in the conversion.
The Genesis port changes the story up pretty significantly. Whereas in the original game Chelnov (the titular runner) is a Russian coal miner caught in the meltdown of a nuclear reactor who gains superpowers and is hunted by the KGB, the Genesis game turns him into a man in a superhero suit trying to save his sister. Yeah, both of those stories are a bit ridiculous, but so were the 1980s and many of the policies of the Soviet government, so I guess it's fitting.
The game itself is a fantastic mashup between a platformer and a side-scrolling shooter. Chelnov runs endlessly to the right, jumping on and over enemies as he collects various upgrades and power-ups. He gets full 8-way shooting controls, can somersault in air to lay down a covering fire, and can face and fire in the direction opposite of which he is running in. With the amount of freedom they provide, the controls do take a bit of time to grasp. They are quite well adapted to the Genesis controller, though, and rarely leave you hanging out to try.
Atomic Runner is every bit as hard as you'd expect from an 80s arcade shoot 'em up, though. The first stage goes a bit easier than the rest so that you can get your bearings, but the others will cut you down fast until you start memorizing enemy and power-up placements. Progress definitely comes easier the longer you play, but the game certainly makes you work for it, and it's quite a satisfying game to finish.
The graphics and sound were updated from the arcade title, and the difference is fairly dramatic. Backdrops have more detail, and the sound got a massive boost. The coin-op's FM soundtrack was good, but the Genesis version of it is godly - how many first level songs are as memorable as this one is?
The song also gets remixed for the 1995 SNES fighter Fighter's History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu, as the background music for Chelnov's stage - he's the last boss and a hidden playable character. If you want to see that (Chelnov looks awesome in a 2D fighter!), you can see it here: • Video
The Genesis was no stranger to offbeat and experimental game designs, and Atomic Runner is a shining example among them. I love it.

This game was so, so weird and addictive. Too bad Data East is gone now. They'll be always missed.

This arcade conversion is yet another excellent Genesis Data East port that manages to be even better than the game upon which it was based - especially with that amazing soundtrack!

What's with Genesis Data East ports being better than the arcade? This, Two Crude and Midnight Resistance?
Though on the the latter two, having Hitoshi Sakamoto do the soundtrack is a huge plus! Though the Stage 3 soundtrack in this game is godlike! (But everything else sounds great, right down to the voices and that AHHHHHHH in Stage 2)

Far more coherent than the Engrish debacle the arcade version used.

Adore this game. Much better than the arcade version. That first stage track is serious breakfast music.

Oh, wow, it never clicked for me that it was the character in this game that was the final boss of Fighter's History! I think I was always too distracted by the fact that his armor seemed to have a pair of boobs on it.

Better than the arcade version, longer game (stages felt far longer), more music, more stage variety, though the story was changed. Plus you could pick a controller configuration that made more sense (I believe it's the 3rd or 4th option in the option menu, where controls can be changed.
And it ends in Murica, on top of the Statue of Liberty.

The x-factor for this superb re-make is the controls. This game sat on the shelf ( quite awhile, like months )until I resolved to understand it and pick a control type that made sense and acclimate to it. This was probably the best game, shooters wise from that Era, early 90s.... The tale is cohesive and for its time, the music is quite above average too...not really a graphics buff, but this game boasted parallax scrolling and did quite well with it, too. theres a variation of weapons and enemies that makes you learn from extensive battles. Idk why i flashed back, but suppose maybe this was the best game overall...had a high re-play value, for sure...

This is quite possibly the strangest game on the Genesis. I never knew it existed despite having owned a Genesis since Christmas of '89. I learned about its existence when the Sega Genesis 2 Mini released. It was one of the first games I played on my Genesis 2 Mini and while the game looks neat the control scheme is just too odd. It does not play like you think it does. I have never been passed the first level it's that counterintuitive.

Like the original arcade, I find this game a love/hate affair: its gameplay and control scheme are the cause of both its quality and its grievances - oftentimes you have to fight more with the constant running and having a button for turning than with the enemies, and some obstacles (like the bouncy floating discs) are clearly made around those limits.
This Genesis remake always amazed me for how much they improved the visuals, although at the cost of coherence (go through a cyber-Egypt and fight a giant Dogu boss, then Aztec stuff? OK!), while keeping all the original placement of enemies and platforms. I miss the dinosaur with an iron mask though, replaced by that Aztec dragon with another face in the mouth.

Incorrect, each system could do what it could do, and both put out some quality software. That's a saying Sega used to sell Genesis over the NES, and never the SNES. In the end, it didn't matter, sales figures say so otherwise, and both 16 bit systems eventually got retired with some great games for both.

Did they though? There is some extenuating factors that really tell a different story. Before I begin...I had both the Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes growing up so no fanboy here. Here goes...
The Sega Genesis led the 4th generation from 1989- the middle of 1995. They were the undisputed kings of the 16-bit generation until Sega of Japan stupidly discontinued the Genesis in early 1995. This left Nintendo as the only company from 1995 forward to feature a fully supported budget console. Essentially, Nintendo "won" the 16-bit generation at the tail end by competing with itself. Had Sega of Japan left USA Sega alone they would have easily beaten Nintendo. Once SOJ killed the Genesis/Mega Drive projects left and right began to cancel until nothing was left. What a shame, but the story does not end there...
While the 16-bit generation was all but over for Sega in the US, UK, Europe, Japan, and South Korea it did not end everywhere. The Sega Mega Drive lived on in Brazil as a fully supported console well beyond 2015. When I say supported what I meant was it became the #1 best selling console of all times in Brazil while moving tens of millions of officially supported and branded Mega Drives all over the country. When you factor in Mega Drive sales in Brazil they quite easily smoked Nintendo in sales by a wide margin. Sega's victory may not have been pretty but in my eyes they beat Nintendo with the help of an emerging market. I think it's at least an interesting story...
