The TCG playerbase likes to copy the OCG. They like to think it's the "natural" result but I bet if we couldn't look up OCG reports/reveals a lot of our top decks upon a set's release would look very different

That's why so many players are jumping to older formats like Goat and Edison and other games entirely like Magic, Flesh and Blood, Pokemon and especially Digimon, there seems to be a huge influx of Yugioh players to Digimon particularly

I often get the feeling that the TCG is an inconvenience to Konami as much as it is a cash cow. When you look at the live stream events you make a point of in this video and i often think to those collector rarities in the OCG and how its multiple reprints of good cards like Ash Blossom you can see the trend of favouritism and dare i say a little bit of something else.
It never occurred to me to put it in those words, but now that you did, everything makes a lot of sense. That perfectly encapsulates Konami's general behavior towards the western playerbase.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way (because I was called a slur once for saying this take) but as an Asian living in a developing country, the reason why TCG prices are through the roof is because TCG players simply eat them up. While yes, Japan and Korea and Singapore are one of the richest nations in the world, a huge portion of OCG playerbase is also made up of players from developing countries like Malaysia, Thailand and the Phillipines. There's no way the game was gonna grow in the OCG region if they handle the price the way TCG does.
A tidbit about the TCG split mentioned at 10:14 in the video: part of the reason that the TCG got a split list was because Allure of Darkness was a TCG exclusive at the time. Allure was semi-limited for us in May, but it wasn't released in Japan until September that year. It was a significant boost to the already-strong Dark decks that ran rampant at the time along with DAD, Disk Commander and DMoC, and it made Dimension Fusion and RftDD stronger due to the additional banished monster (especially Dimension Fusion due to DMoC). The next OCG list followed suit with the September list as they also banned Dimension Fusion and DMoC and limited RftDD, so the TCG brought the list back in line by unlimiting Allure of Darkness, although it didn't stay unlimited for long.

That article is interesting but I find that they left something out... financial reasons. I refuse to believe some cards aren't banned because Konami wants players to move on to new product, regardless of a decks viability at the point of it's hits. Your tier 2 decks are not safe so to speak.
It's quite simple, honestly Konami, as a Japanese Company, doesn't give a shit about the TCG. We just subsidize the OCG. That's all we do in their eyes.

It's amusing to me how we've come full circle from that infamous 2012 list where Plants got hit even though Wind-Ups and Inzektors were the biggest problems, to the most recent list where Halq decks got hit even though Tearlaments and Mystic Mine were the biggest problems. Without clear communication from Konami, the community is left to make up its own speculation about why some cards are being protected from the banhammer but not others, and in the absence of transparency from the company, the most cynical takes about profit margins from newer sets frequently win out. More than any other purpose, Konami needs to re-establish those channels to the community in order to rebuild trust. It's something that WotC, for all its many many faults, does very well with Magic: the Gathering, putting human faces like Gavin Verhey front and center in communicating design and development decisions.
Farfa is a very well spoken and gentelmanly man in this video. He spoke so eloquently and gracefully. I never truly noticed how good of a speaker/talker he was. I mean this genuinely. This is different than his normal pickle bald jeff content, although I enjoy that immensly as I originated pollo 👍, which was a thing for months back in 2020-2021 until I went away from yugioh for a few years. Its good to be back.
I just wanna talk to a guy that works on konami, even the girl that brings cofee to the depentant, just to know what they're thinking about: why do mine still free? Why are they creating a swordsoul card that outs your mine? Why do they keep curious free but lavalval chain was a mistake?Why brave token exist? WHY INVOKED EXIST?!?!
Instead of us as a community saying ban mine or firewall or whatever, we need to start telling Konami plz communicate with us on why cards are banned so they can see it in the public view

You forgot to mention how the banlist in the TCG is mainly made to push out new card while nearly killing old decks that would compete with the newer decks, such as the list that killed Pendulum, Orcust, Striker and Salad.
the ocg does the same thing though. ocg refused to stop playing adventure to the point konami had to hit it multiple times. same went for them hitting previous decks that were from sets no longer in circulation. they even unban cards to push products like rusty bardiche for phantom rage and electrumite to push the set with metalfoes in it.
Master Duel: "The changes made to the list reflect our aims of preventing Decks from being too difficult to counter, and ensuring the game's tactical element is not compromized by overly short Duels."
One more thing regarding the no sooner than date, originally when the dates were removed we had no time estimate at all, which eventually lead to 7 months without a banlist after the August 2016 one. Shortly after that we started getting the month for the no sooner than date, and a couple of banlists later we got an exact date

Why I sympathize with the points as to why there’s a ban list, I think we should also take into account there are three types of cards that get put on the list: 1: Cards like Ancient Fairy Dragon that were undoubtedly bad when printed but then all of a sudden became good for one reason or another. 2: Cards like Snow that were okay and were balanced around the fact “it would be really hard for players to meet this condition” but as the game went on it became exceedingly easy to meet that condition and since the limiting factor on the card was “this would be hard to reach in a duel” and not “you can only use this effect once per turn” the card becomes broken. 3: Cards that from the go you can tell, “Hmm this is kind of broken”. Konami should have some kind of idea of what’s “broken” before they even decide to print card. I feel, if Konami were actually trying, the only kind of cards that would be on the ban list would be cards in the first category. Where some kind of card combination or change in the game suddenly makes a card go to “we need this banned”. Cards in the second and third group can easily be “not a thing” if Konami would put even the slightest thought into what they *decide* to print. Konami is making conscious decisions to print some cards and they’re making conscious decisions not to future proof and thinking through their own game.
Funny thing about the author being listed as just Konami and no longer a human being. This isn't unique to Yugioh or even to Konami. The video game industry in the 80s and early 90s was notorious for putting in fake names for the end credits because a lot of individual developers were freelancers and companies didn't want competitors to go head-hunting for their talent. As a result, there are a significant amount of old video games where we actually have no idea who made them. Who made Castlevania 1? We still have no conclusion. In the Genesis Sonic games, Mark Cerny was uncredited, and we would have no confirmation that he even worked on Sonic 2 if Sega themselves hadn't re-released the game years later. But this practice was still most heavily done in Konami, where for a time they explicitly forbade using real names in the credits. Even in re-releases of old games like Castlevania Anniversary Collection, they still have not changed those names (likely because they don't even know anymore). Konami is historically one of the most hostile, dead-end developers in gaming.
This was wonderful and thank you for the history lesson. It would be nice to get some more insight into the changes on the banlist. But first could we get an update to the konami blog website
What I'd like to see: 1. Unified card pool and releases between all regions. 2. Unified F/L list. 3. Full breakdown of hits. 4. Releasing new cards at 1 or 2 if they know they're going to be incredibly powerful.
I think you missed that we did in fact have some communication about the banlist from Konami in April 2019. It was when Konami said that they felt the player response to the current list was very positive so they would release the list in late April rather than early April and would only have small adjustments in it.
Honestly I really hope Konami watches this, we kinda know they do pay attention to content creators channels so this one should be sent straight to R&D and the social media team and whoever is in charge of them respectively. We don't just want communication, we need it, its a vital part of Konami keeping in touch with the playerbase and not just being some far away company who makes the cards and changes the banlist and runs events, yes while that is their primary purpose, in a digital age where social media is a career, the absolute least we can expect is some genuine communication, even if that means bringing back Kevin Tuarte or someone that worked with him to manage the social media team at Konami HQ.
So I had a crazy thought while watching this well-put together video. What if Konami is keeping the banlist date secret to stop resellers etc… With the current controversy over gambling I wonder if this is something they can reference if someone tries to put yugioh into some type of category like “gambling” or “ betting.” Note to farfa: When you take time to structure and professionally present something, you do really well. I think you should take this type of approach more often, like once every 1-3 months. Good video 😊

I'd argue that not revealing ban list dates would be more towards defending against a legal aspect than anything else, while still allowing Konami to operate business as usual for the most part.
not really a big thing, but in OCG here, date of banlist implementation is fixed (i.e. 1st Jan, 1st Apr, 1st Jun and 1st Oct every year), and the announcement usually around 10+ on the month before new banlist start implement. In the past the announcement were made through V-Jump magazine (which lead to many high-skilled photoshoped fake lists). Subsequently the announcement is made through the official website that dedicated to announce all ygo OCG news. I think since COVID-19 if not mistaken, they start announce it through TH-cam video first.
Bruh missed out on talking about the worst part of the no date period. The period with no banlist updates from August 2016 to March 2017. That shit was never gonna end.

It may not have started like this, but the banlist is the way for konami to keep changing the meta so they can release more cards and get more money as fast as possible. In theory the concept of the banlist is good, but in reality is just a "cash graber" depending on the region and playstyles and yugioh is a very expensive game and nowadays is a solitaire card game the same thing they said they were against. I miss 2012 yugioh
One benefit of having a “no sooner than” date is that if you have a tournament a week or two out, you can be sure it will come under the current banlist. The problem is that once we approach or pass that date, you lose that benefit. The banlist could drop literally tomorrow or next month, and you have no idea if it is safe to start building your deck. That’s when you get people hassling Konami about the banlist. What Konami should do is have the “no sooner than” date. Once they get within a week or so of that date, they should either commit to doing a banlist on that day and update the text accordingly, or kick the date down the road a couple more weeks in the future.
The only problem with this is that it's placebo. People think that the "no sooner than" means "will definitely happen then" and get paranoid like you mentioned and/or start hate mailing because they want the banlist asap because screw Mine. Regardless of whether it's the "no sooner than" or "few months", they normally give a week from the list dropping to implementing it so that people can edit their decks, if needed. While a vague window for release is annoying, it is better when fewer things need changing. It also gives them the freedom to do emergency banlists without them being as noticeable.
You know, when you said on stream that you were working on a banlist documentary, I was expecting something way longer. This is still pretty well researched though
As a longtime Magic player who is not a fan of the direction of the game, at least Wizards gives us amazing communication about the ban lists. Not just one article, multiples. Hell, when Nadu broke multiple formats and got banned, the designer responsible for last minute changes to the card even wrote an article copping up to what he did and how it happened. Konami definitely does certain things better than wizards, but communication is not one of them.
I do like that they started posting on Twitter. Edit: I like it cause you can just go there and you don’t have to worry about missing something on the list
hearing old justification for not wanting to encourage decks that stall really makes me support that mystic mine should be banned regardless of whether you think it keeps combo decks in check or not. It combined with time rulings means that it should really go

You forgot to mention how the banlist in the TCG is mainly made to push out new card while nearly killing old decks that would compete with the newer decks, such as the list that killed Pendulum, Orcust, Striker and Salad.
the ocg does the same thing though. ocg refused to stop playing adventure to the point konami had to hit it multiple times. same went for them hitting previous decks that were from sets no longer in circulation. they even unban cards to push products like rusty bardiche for phantom rage and electrumite to push the set with metalfoes in it.
Electrumite has been limited for 3 years in the OCG. Not banned.

One more thing regarding the no sooner than date, originally when the dates were removed we had no time estimate at all, which eventually lead to 7 months without a banlist after the August 2016 one. Shortly after that we started getting the month for the no sooner than date, and a couple of banlists later we got an exact date
I like how badly Kevin Tewarts letter on the banlist aged, man's lists the reasons there's a ban list, and it was literally to prevent the game from getting to this point....that didn't age well lol...."avoid one dominant deck"...

Why I sympathize with the points as to why there’s a ban list, I think we should also take into account there are three types of cards that get put on the list:
1: Cards like Ancient Fairy Dragon that were undoubtedly bad when printed but then all of a sudden became good for one reason or another.
2: Cards like Snow that were okay and were balanced around the fact “it would be really hard for players to meet this condition” but as the game went on it became exceedingly easy to meet that condition and since the limiting factor on the card was “this would be hard to reach in a duel” and not “you can only use this effect once per turn” the card becomes broken.
3: Cards that from the go you can tell, “Hmm this is kind of broken”. Konami should have some kind of idea of what’s “broken” before they even decide to print card.
I feel, if Konami were actually trying, the only kind of cards that would be on the ban list would be cards in the first category. Where some kind of card combination or change in the game suddenly makes a card go to “we need this banned”. Cards in the second and third group can easily be “not a thing” if Konami would put even the slightest thought into what they *decide* to print. Konami is making conscious decisions to print some cards and they’re making conscious decisions not to future proof and thinking through their own game.

Funny thing about the author being listed as just Konami and no longer a human being. This isn't unique to Yugioh or even to Konami. The video game industry in the 80s and early 90s was notorious for putting in fake names for the end credits because a lot of individual developers were freelancers and companies didn't want competitors to go head-hunting for their talent. As a result, there are a significant amount of old video games where we actually have no idea who made them. Who made Castlevania 1? We still have no conclusion. In the Genesis Sonic games, Mark Cerny was uncredited, and we would have no confirmation that he even worked on Sonic 2 if Sega themselves hadn't re-released the game years later.
But this practice was still most heavily done in Konami, where for a time they explicitly forbade using real names in the credits. Even in re-releases of old games like Castlevania Anniversary Collection, they still have not changed those names (likely because they don't even know anymore). Konami is historically one of the most hostile, dead-end developers in gaming.
This was wonderful and thank you for the history lesson. It would be nice to get some more insight into the changes on the banlist. But first could we get an update to the konami blog website

I think you missed that we did in fact have some communication about the banlist from Konami in April 2019.
It was when Konami said that they felt the player response to the current list was very positive so they would release the list in late April rather than early April and would only have small adjustments in it.
Honestly I really hope Konami watches this, we kinda know they do pay attention to content creators channels so this one should be sent straight to R&D and the social media team and whoever is in charge of them respectively. We don't just want communication, we need it, its a vital part of Konami keeping in touch with the playerbase and not just being some far away company who makes the cards and changes the banlist and runs events, yes while that is their primary purpose, in a digital age where social media is a career, the absolute least we can expect is some genuine communication, even if that means bringing back Kevin Tuarte or someone that worked with him to manage the social media team at Konami HQ.

I remember getting hit by that first banlist. Took years to get my Chaos bois back.
So I had a crazy thought while watching this well-put together video. What if Konami is keeping the banlist date secret to stop resellers etc… With the current controversy over gambling I wonder if this is something they can reference if someone tries to put yugioh into some type of category like “gambling” or “ betting.”

Nope, Konami colludes with resellers. Konami is the reason why resellers are profitable with their rarity bumping and short printing.
@@Tyler-Wiley Ok got it, my question would be what stops this from colluding with resellers if that is the case? I'd argue that not revealing ban list dates would be more towards defending against a legal aspect than anything else, while still allowing Konami to operate business as usual for the most part.
not really a big thing, but in OCG here, date of banlist implementation is fixed (i.e. 1st Jan, 1st Apr, 1st Jun and 1st Oct every year), and the announcement usually around 10+ on the month before new banlist start implement. In the past the announcement were made through V-Jump magazine (which lead to many high-skilled photoshoped fake lists). Subsequently the announcement is made through the official website that dedicated to announce all ygo OCG news. I think since COVID-19 if not mistaken, they start announce it through TH-cam video first.

It may not have started like this, but the banlist is the way for konami to keep changing the meta so they can release more cards and get more money as fast as possible. In theory the concept of the banlist is good, but in reality is just a "cash graber" depending on the region and playstyles and yugioh is a very expensive game and nowadays is a solitaire card game the same thing they said they were against. I miss 2012 yugioh

One benefit of having a “no sooner than” date is that if you have a tournament a week or two out, you can be sure it will come under the current banlist.
The problem is that once we approach or pass that date, you lose that benefit. The banlist could drop literally tomorrow or next month, and you have no idea if it is safe to start building your deck. That’s when you get people hassling Konami about the banlist.
What Konami should do is have the “no sooner than” date. Once they get within a week or so of that date, they should either commit to doing a banlist on that day and update the text accordingly, or kick the date down the road a couple more weeks in the future.
The only problem with this is that it's placebo. People think that the "no sooner than" means "will definitely happen then" and get paranoid like you mentioned and/or start hate mailing because they want the banlist asap because screw Mine. Regardless of whether it's the "no sooner than" or "few months", they normally give a week from the list dropping to implementing it so that people can edit their decks, if needed. While a vague window for release is annoying, it is better when fewer things need changing. It also gives them the freedom to do emergency banlists without them being as noticeable.

As a longtime Magic player who is not a fan of the direction of the game, at least Wizards gives us amazing communication about the ban lists. Not just one article, multiples. Hell, when Nadu broke multiple formats and got banned, the designer responsible for last minute changes to the card even wrote an article copping up to what he did and how it happened.
Konami definitely does certain things better than wizards, but communication is not one of them.
I do like that they started posting on Twitter.
Edit: I like it cause you can just go there and you don’t have to worry about missing something on the list
hearing old justification for not wanting to encourage decks that stall really makes me support that mystic mine should be banned regardless of whether you think it keeps combo decks in check or not. It combined with time rulings means that it should really go
