Hi Joe, I covered that in my last video on Late Season Uptiding For Cod mate, as we get back towards autumn and winter again I'll be doing videos for shore cod rigs and baiting up too. thanks for your feedback its much appreciated and gives me an idea of where I can steer my videos to help everyone out. tight lines Rich
Its lashed on to the hook with elasticated cotton, I baited up with it in my Uptiding for cod video. It always lasts 15-20 mins, which is all I leave each cast out for before refreshing my bait. I'll be covering it further later in the season when we turn back to Uptiding and winter shore fishing for Cod. Others salt it to make it like putty, or wrap it in finger bandages. Its all down to personal choice.
I like to wrap half a opened up squid on one side and maybe some blacks well wrapped with bait elastic on the other, this increases scent trail and slows washout.
You do get some early starters but autumn time is best September/October/November If you're in touch with a Crab Fisherman, they will usually keep you updated on availability & condition of crabs.
It's unlikely you will see a difference from male to female as bait at this stage in their reproducive cycle . Female crabs have to have shed ( be soft) to be mated and then carry fertilized eggs under the tail ( a berried femail) when a femail is ready to shed and mate she gives of a pheromone which attracts males but also fish Male Green (shore crabs) can be found in the spring carring a female under them waiting for her to shed these are the peller crabs you buy for bait , the males shed earlier in the year so they are ready to mate .
I am an angler for more than 45 yrs and this latest TH-cam cart craze is just depleting the crab stocks to the point where they will be an endangered species pushing up the cost of eating crab for the general public. In my opinion 🤔
You're entitled to your opinion, but we've been using cart in our region for over 30 years, so its hardly a latest craze. The crabs used would of been landed for food or whelk bait. The crab that are landed aren't specifically for bait, you cant blame the crab fishermen for wanting make a livlihood, your issues should be raised to the government and the people that make the rules, if you feel so triggered by it.
I remember us not being able to use it in the amble open. That ruling has been lifted now. We still fish it every year. I actually put this viceo together before lock down. The price of wings is crazy now, it might help a few folk save a few quid making their own.
What do you think eats crab eggs? Cod. With the general destruction of predatory fish stocks, crabs and lobsters are a very healthy population. Squid and other molluscs even more common these days, so use those as great baits if you're concerned about crabs
There is no more increase in crab being caught, the people producing cart buy the crab from the suppliers or boats who would be selling to stores or restaurants.
You can buy crab wings already prepared, which tbh is loads easier if you arent using many. A box of crabs will set you back £40-£80 and you can usually expect around 100 wings per box.
Nice one richie

Cheers mate, appreciate the feedback!
Good video, would be good to see how you hook them up!

“Pretty dead is like being fairly pregnant LOL

How does that stay on the hook, it must turn almost like jelly once it's defrosted?

how much do the crabs cost or do you catch them yourself
Depending on market prices £40-£80 a box, and you should get around 100 baits per box

@@Fish.Bros. yes the Yorkshire lads started using in the 80s it was banned up here in comps . But it is the latest craze on TH-cam

I'd rather eat the crabs then use them for bait, this must cost a fortune..
