I love how his reaction isn't fear: it's impatience, because he knows he can defeat Javert with his little finger and doesn't want to waste the time. And Javert knows it too, because every time Valjean starts forward he runs back. Masterful stuff.
In the book, when Javert enters Fantine's room, Valjean grabs a fucking iron bar and says calmly to Javert "I advise you not to disturb me at this moment!" and Javert backs away!
This scene is funnier when you remember the valjean is supposed to be like 10 years older than javert. when the bishop said there is bread to make you strong he was NOT messing around 😂.
That's ironic. They're both known for playing the Phantom of the Opera in London and the 25th anniversary UK tour, one after the other. And between both shows, they playing Javert and Valjean in this tour
@@cooper6381 It probably happens more often on the West End where Phantom's also play Valjean and Javert, since Les Miserable wasn't on Broadway simultaneously for most of the last few decades. The more recent revival of Les Miserable on Broadway had Ramin Karimloo as Valjean, but he never played the Phantom on Broadway.
the tempo for this production's confrontation was faster, yeah. I like it. Gets the blood pumping and they're both really well in-time. I feel like this is how it should have been from the get-go.
