My dad grew potatoes on his allotment years ago. The plants ended up about 2 foot high with potatoes the size of your fist! All done without fertilizer!! Amazing my dad.

      Hi Paul
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
I do a lot of things still now what my dad taught me when I was a kid.
Your dad sounds an amazing person.

Thanks Rob, hope they grew well. We are just starting on the home grown approach. Good to make use of our food and garden waste. Interesting see 50/50 mix of new and old compost because we'll need a lot 😂 im often busy working on the house so simply looking to grow anything low maintenance that might save enough to buy more cement 😂 thanks again for taking time to share your knowledge

Nice to see you getting those potatoes in Rob!! Lovely healthy chits on them too! Early spring always brings such pretty flowers!! That's a beautiful peony you have my friend! Soon to flower by the looks of it!! Nice spot to put the spuds!! Shame to have the unwanted visitors... tis the season for it though I guess! Pickling cukes sound like fun!! I hope your week goes well, my friend!! Cheers!!💖

      Hi Chrissy
It was great getting some planting done but we still having frosts at night.
I love cucumbers but they don't like me, but pickled cucumber is ok with me.
Take care my friend and looking forward to your vids when you can get on your plot.

Hey Rob!! Sorry you're still getting them, hopefully for not much longer, my friend!! Many people feel that way about cukes, as long as you can enjoy them as pickles though, you're all set!! Plot got halved my friend, they made a mistake, but hey, maybe I got a cute new plot mate? Have a great weekend my friend!! 💖

Interesting you use spent compost.I'm gonna have to try that out.:)I tend to bury my containers to save on watering, just dig a hole for them, use dug earth with a little compost and BFB and put the whole thing back in.I have no water source so it works for me.It's hard work carrying water down 3 flights on stairs to water the garden. They only need watering when it's dry for ages.I live in Wales so that is very rare lol.

The main reason I grow in pots is to stop slug and wire worm damage, I used to grow in the ground but would have to throw half the crop away with slug or wire worm damage so I stopped growing spuds until I saw a video on about growing in pots.
I always use my compost at least 3 times before it is spread over my plot / raised beds.
The way I look at things, once you harvest a crop throw the soil in the garden do we throw it away, No.
So why should we throw compost away, just refresh with nutrients the same as we do the garden then it is good to go again.
Have you thought about getting a long hose from your window and hanging down to water.

I planted sweet potatoes in a kiddie pool last year and they did pretty well so I think I am going to do the same this year. I love to plant any potatoes in some kind of container just helps when it comes harvest time. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a bit late with my second earlies, they are going to have to go in this weekend along with my main crop. I'll be doing two seeds per 30l pot

I released a video on planting my first earlier this morning and I did mine almost the same as yours, I just left out the blood, fish and bone...maybe I'll add it when I do the rest. Thanks for the advice Rob. Take care 😊

I would not bother with the BFB Rob. Too much nitrogen - but if that's what you do then that's what you do LOL We are all different.

Can anyone give me a quick discription of first early, second early and main crop. Mainly difference between sowing time and harvest.

    • @davidthescottishvegan
      @davidthescottishvegan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

First earlies can be planted in mid March to early April and harvested May to July, Second earlies planted end of March to early April then harvested June to end of August, Maincrop mid April to end of May for planting then harvested from September to November. The harvest time depends on the variety which applies to First, Second earlies and Maincrop.
