      @codygarrett866 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@godspeed5428 so having the opposition comes from being one square away from the enemy king, directly across from your king, at the end of your turn, meaning you move, and now there is one square between your king and the opponents, but its now his turn and can only move back or to the side. Distant opposition is the concept, where one is an odd number of squares, so is 3, 5 and 7, and knowing this, you have the same result if both kings were to start moving towards one another. Its opposition at a distance.

    • @MA-er3yw
      @MA-er3yw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@wildgurgs3614 I disagree, forks, discovered attacks, forcing moves, making the king stop guarding a piece, stalling, spike checks, game conversion, counter attacks, these all start from checks (edit: I don’t mean every fork comes from a check, or that every counterattack starts with one, I’m just giving examples)

      @@MA-er3yw Fair point. What I meant to say is that it's often tempting, especially for novices, to deliver a check without planning out a line of moves, leading to the checked opponent simply moving their king out of the way with no real consequence.

    12:34 actually you can play king c6, cause if king c8 you just push b6, and if king b8 you push b7, since you're not behind the pawn the black king can go to a7 and you play king c7, now the black king can't go to b8 so you just push and promote.

    These concepts gave me much more control in the game I have just played. I had a bishop and knight up but I won the game by using my king to protect the free pawn to promote and then rather than using the queen with bishop and knight I just used my king to push their king down the board and did 1 queen move to finish - versus my usual scramble of allowing their king to just move out of the way. Pawn races make me nervous, especially if I only have a few minutes on my clock. So in the position at 18:32, my approach would me to win the h pawn first: 1. Ke6 Kg7 2. Kf5 Kh6 3. Kf6 Kh7 4. Kg5 followed by Kxh5. Once I have eliminated the h pawn, my king can run to the queenside to gobble up the pawns on that side. The opposing king has to capture my h pawn before he can run to the queenside and will get there much too late. There's no pawn race to calculate, which is good for my nerves!

    I dont know how many will see this but if you are defending against a rook pawn with just your king, if your king can get to the c7, f7, c2, or f2 squares depending on your side and pawn, it is a draw because the other king will have to be in the corner or on the side of the board itself and you can stalemate your opponent by force.
    Eventually your opponent will play that last pawn move to a2, a7, h2, or h7 with their king in the corner and you play the king move that pins the other player and stalemate them. Very useful knowledge that you may not have to make it into the corner yourself if your opponents king is there itself.

    OMG!!! My son is a chess player and I've just been the chess mom for a while, but decided to take on it myself. Doing group lessons, private lessons, watching videos, solving puzzles....
    I know how the pieces move, and basic knowledge....but no knowledge of openings (and I know there are over 1000 of them with their variations....and not much knowledge of endgames. it's so much to learn!
    Anyway my coach just taught me the King-Pawn, King-Queen, and King-Rook endgames today.
    Your video on opposition is wonderful! Also because you mentioned the "100 endgames you must know" by Jesus de la Villa
    My son loved it too. When he was also around 1900 I bought it for him....and one more coincidence is that you went to DR, which is where I am from.
    Anyway....just a chess mom following you now.
    Thank you for the great content!!

You explain concepts fluently and with high detail, explaining the consequences of each variation. Most importantly, you're funny and energetic. You spread that energy to your viewer and make us thrilled to your content. After all, you're a bad chess player indeed (that was a joke because I always see new hate comment, and I'm starting to think that they actually know your expertise in chess, they just want to make jokes about it. 8:32 "There's no way you're going to get that king out of the corner." But why not? We need you to finish the lesson and demonstrate it so beginners understand. You can say it, but I don't understand why that king can't be moved. If you'd taken ten seconds and shown what happens it would make sense.

      Because the black king will keep shuffling between a8 and b8 and you cannot get it out of the corner because the position will eventually lead to the pawn behind the black king in the corner and the white king will be either on a6 or b6 and moving away from the pawn results in a draw as well

    I need more pawn endgames. King moves are very counter intuitive a lot of the time

    • @Questionmark142
      @Questionmark142 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      i think one of the reasons for king moves being counterintuitive comes from diagonal movement. a king on a1 needs the same amount of moves to get to a8 then he needs to get to h8, even though the latter is much further away. so a king moves sort of faster when he goes diagonal.

    When is a Queen stronger than two rooks? It seems clear on most situations with otherwise equal material that the two rooks will prevail, how far ahead on pawns/what positions etc. can the Queen at least draw if not better? Is one pawn enough in most cases?
