Securing the whip for a swing is two movements. First you do what he did and get it wrapped around the beam. Whip users call this a "knot" but it's really not. the only thing holding it in place is friction and momentum. You then need to throw a wave down the whip to cause the middle to cross over the end, pinning it to the beam and preventing it from coming loose. And once you've done that you need to make sure your swing doesn't pull it in a direction that causes it to let the pressure off the end and let it slip. It's definitely not easy, but it's very doable with practice.

Yes very true. Is basic rope science! The whip must be secured by the last over part being played over the coil. This stops the whip being able to move. It's actually the Wight of the person swinging, that stops it slipping.

Also an Indy bullwhip man myself. Totally right. It's the pressure on the knott that allows for a swing. I tell people this video is some scientist pretending to know what he's doing... But Adam didn't research whip technique at all

This actually kinda makes sense, if you pay attention to the original film, Indy is very experienced with his whip and swings over the gap flawlessly, but Satipo being inexperienced with the whip, he almost falls to his doom.

Hey, major bull whip user here! I have 18 years of practice with a variety of different whips but the bullwhip is my strong suit. I can confirm, preforming a "wrap" and swinging from it is 100% doable. Its a matter of flicking the whip over itself on the wrap you create by doing the "wave" technic as the gentleman below me mentioned. From here, an overlapping interlocking "knot" is created and in this way, yes, swinging from it is VERY possible. Providing you are using a high quality whip made with good material. Kangaroo and Nylon Paracord I have found are materials best for this, especially if you plan on putting heavy work on it, swinging, grabbing, ect. Dont try it with a whip from spirit halloween.

In the full episode they did it successfully when they made the tree branch actually have a treebranch-like surface. But in terms of something like the smooth branch in this clip, like someone said in the comments, it requires a little more finesse to get the whip to 'knot' securely

    1) I don't think this works with just any whip. 2) You need know how to handle the whip, you need practice (which Indi has in abundance). So this test doesn't prove anything, except for lazy preparation.

The first one to actually teach him how to use the bull whip was lash la rue...the king of the bull whip. Though you hear a lot of others take credit later on. No one was better with a bull whip than lash (Alfred). I met him twice when I was a little girl when he came to visit my grandpa. I never realized how loud a whip was until then.

if it was done all in one motion it would have a better chance of holding you thru the swing wether theres a knot or not your momentum and the slight bit of tension in the whip will hold you long enough to clear that

If it's a continuous motion like if you run, jump, whip and the force of you falling tightens at the point of the swing it should stay tight enough for you to get across. You whipped it, then waited allowing slack in the rope to loosen. If it's one continuous motion done by someone athletic and not some nerd it should be doable. The trick is loosening the whip to get it back once you've made it across.
