I add a swivel to the front and a split ring to the back hook and i almost never loose a fish. The swivel eliminates twist and the split ring allows more twist on the hook so a big fish can't lock the hook and use the lure weight to throw the hook. It works and credit goes to Matt Allen of Tacticalbassin from a video of his i watched years ago.
I was in Colorado last summer, up in steamboat springs. Stagecoach reservoir up there has big pike. I had one of my saltwater rods with me and my ten foot old town canoe....yep, I caught pike over twenty pounds from a canoe. whopper plopper, the big ones. I smoked pike and canned it. I have several cases of delicious smoked fish. the pressure canner causes the bones to go away or turn completely soft. 110 minutes at 15 pounds.
Most fish I catch bite the front hook. I put a good red treble on the front and an in-line single hook on the rear. I have caught multiple 20 -21 inch smallies on the 90 size bluegill color. Bone is second and Loon is third.
Randy, just wanted to let you know, I have been watching some of the Lynn Dollar fishing videos of you guys back in the Citgo’s and older Bassmaster vids. You, Denny, Rick Clunn, Ron Sheffield, Davey Hite, ABSOLUTELY ALL you guys ARE Hammers! Love the way you fish and are so well spoken. I’m about 4 years younger than you but, when I was in High School, you were my favorite! Thank you for your service to the overall fishing industry! Thank you again friend! Tight Lines Always! Randy Hoobler👍🏻
I use the smallest one. It gets stolen by a lot of pickeral, but otherwise has been very effective. Downsizing tends to work better in pressured water.
I like the stop and go retrieve myself because it seems like a more natural motion instead of just reeling it in straight. Maybe it's just me. Thanks Randy.
Bigger hooks will reduce hook ups rate if the rod isn't stiff enough to easily sink the bigger hooks , best hook size is a close interaction with rod stiffness.
First off👆This is great advice. Like you Randy, I haven’t fished a whopper plopper in a long time for all your aforementioned reasons. Today I started throwing a walking bait with very little success. I remembered your video and I tied on a ‘loon’ whopper plopper. I used the burn and pause method you mentioned with incredible success. I caught around 10 fish in a couple of hours 2 biggest smallies were 3-15 and 4-2. Thanks for the great tips….worked like a charm!!
Randy id love a video on when to switch from red hooks to the standard black treple hooks bc down here in Florida I usually keep the red hooks on lures but I will change during the winter months.
I lost way too many fish throwing them on 20lbs fluorocarbon. With braid, I don't even have to set the hook. They hook themselves if they get it. Darn smallies will blow it out of the water and not get stuck though. Largemouth always seem to get it though.
Randy the only think I don't like about flouro, sometimes I'll slow it down. Use it more like a pop-r it will make alot of commotion. Or very little. Just this morning I was curious of smaller hooks would be better for a slow retrieve. I haven't caught now where near the fish you have!!!
That's a lure I've never tried but it should work for the saltwater. It would definitely catch jacks and snook in FL. Maybe I'll try one on the Chesapeake Bay in the early mornings for redfish and trout. A striper might hit it too. They're supposed to be around but i haven't seen one in the year I've been here.
I have fished woppler plopper several years and upgraded the hooks to size up. This WILL MAKE THE PLOPPER SINK too MUCH AND SO IT WILL NOT MAKE THE PLOPPER NOISE. It might work on the 130 size. Anything less the plopper will sink too much.
My loon plopper didn't catch any fish. So I painted it fire tiger. Still haven't caught any fish. Fire tiger torpedo catches fish as long as the propeller is spinning.
Go fish dock walkways with mono or fluro, let me know how that goes. When that 5# fish bites 2 cables away, im more confident in braid getting that fish out.
@@MrJNOTHUM I fished around boat dock, cables, my whole life at the boat dock lake capital of the world, which is lake of the Ozarks and I’ve never used braid and never had any problem
th-cam.com/video/5PSChBd3b9o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dnLnX6ZrTWBMwx-b I fish the 3 1/2 inch size exclusively, I have two of the larger ones but never throw them.

I do the same with mine! Lol. They look just like yours. Sharpie.
Gonna make sure I watch this all way through so you don’t get mad

Tight Lines Always!
Randy Hoobler👍🏻
If I'm throwing $20 lures I'm rocking braid.
Gonna get my lure back lol😅

Berkley Choppo 120, needs no modifications.
Great info Randy! Gonna try some of them soon. Love a Whopper Plopper bite! What about adding a good quality swivel to reduce line twist?
I like the stop and go retrieve myself because it seems like a more natural motion instead of just reeling it in straight. Maybe it's just me. Thanks Randy.
Ploppers were great a couple years ago.. now I'm lucky if I get a hit.
For some reason, the frog is the best setup for summer long top water strikes.

I like the 110 size the best
Bone or black 110 size is magic

Good stuff randy, never tried the stop and go.
Another mod is to add a Swivel on the front . Stops and line twist if , when it rolls over
ITS THE WAY U WORK THE BAIT IN MAY A DIFFERENT RETRIVE THAT CATCHES THEM

Thx i did this speed retrieve with a buzz bait i forgot!!!!!

Topwater, so mono for me. Thanks for the info.
Do you ever try the shrink tubing on the back hook/split ring to keep the back hook standing out straight?

Great Info . . . thank you.
I like the 70 and 110. 12# mono and a crankbait rod
I love the 90 and 110. Bone, Loon and monkey Butt colors
The smaller ones are pretty good for smallmouth bass in rivers and streams. The bigger ones are definitely better for largemouth.

different brand hooks weigh different. try light wire.
@user-ro5rl5et5i OK, good, I will try them. I appreciate the feedback 👍
You're using the wrong treble hooks. G-finesse are lighter wire
My loon plopper didn't catch any fish. So I painted it fire tiger. Still haven't caught any fish. Fire tiger torpedo catches fish as long as the propeller is spinning.
I have almost no luck with bone color, but black kills them. I think Im going to use your black magic marker on my bone color.
I bought some #1 g finesse trebles and they are smaller in overall profile than stock. Are you sure you don't mean 1/0?
What is wrong with 20 pound Mono, lot less expensive? Works fine with all topwater lures. Great when fishing a Spook !!!
You could probably get away with that

How do you avoid line twist ?
Do you fish or just comment on fishing lures, etc
You need to watch the skeet Reese interview on BTL when he talks about FFS
