  • Renowned British dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin, who has already won six Olympic medals, including three golds, will not participate in the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. This decision comes after her suspension by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) due to allegations of animal cruelty.
A four-year-old video, recently resurfaced, shows Dujardin whipping her horse more than 24 times in one minute during a training session. The video was recorded by a 19-year-old at the time. On Instagram, Dujardin admitted it was a "misjudgment" and voluntarily decided not to compete in the Olympics. She wrote, "What happened is completely uncharacteristic and does not reflect how I train my horses and students. But there is no excuse. I am deeply ashamed."
The FEI announced on Tuesday that Dujardin is suspended until further notice. The organization stated that her behavior during the filmed training session violated the principles of horse welfare.
Incidents of animal cruelty in equestrian sports seem to be increasing. During the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, modern pentathlete Annika Schleu faced criticism after she struck her horse with a whip at least nine times and used spurs multiple times after it refused to jump. Instead of winning gold, Schleu faced a scandal and an investigation for animal cruelty, resulting in a fine. Subsequently, the modern pentathlon’s equestrian jumping event was removed for future games.
It remains unclear what further consequences Charlotte Dujardin will face beyond her suspension. However, it is certain that someone else will claim the dressage gold medal at these Olympic Games.
