Soooooo I'm pretty sure all that "dirt" coming off on the paper towels is actually the shellac finish. TSP and shellac don work well together. To answer the question. TSP is trisodium phosphate. It's kind of a heavy duty cleaner

He doesn't say it in the video. You do this to get the wood stripped down to the bare wood to apply a new layer of shellac. This is not for daily cleaning. You only do this if you're going to re-seal it.

Ross , how can you tell patina from dirt ? It is a delicate dance that most people don't understand. Patina nuts like the Keno bros would probably be yelling NOOOOOO! while watching you clean. People that are crazy for originality, including dirt are probably gonna send you hate mail for devaluing that table in their opinion. I like to strike a balance between cleaning gently and watching closely for actual oxidized patina opposed to real dirt.

The Keno brothers were banned for committing auction fraud, and nobody wants dirty old barn furniture full of bat guano and snake skins sitting in their living room. You HAVE to clean it.

Depends on the buyer. Back in the day, everything was cleaned and refinished. Leaving far less pieces with original grime and finish. So old finish and no repairs, can be the difference between $200 and $2500 or even $25,000. Still needs to be a great piece to begin with.

Will the 3M pad not scratch the underlying finish?

What did you use to scrub with? I've used tsp to try and clean old cupboards and it didnt work well. Was afraid of trying anything abrasiv that could damage the wood.

Ross, I'm curious about the use of TSP. When would you choose the clean with TSP? versus when would you choose to clean with something like Krud Kutter? pros and cons of each?

Does this video not explain what TSP is? Lol

    • @MrWolfSnack

It is a very hazardous industrial cleaning solution. It is a powder you mix with water. You must wear a respirator and thick gloves. It will eat through your skin to the bone. What he is using in the video is likely the civilian stuff you can find in the store which is not actually real TSP. Genuine TSP is not sold to the public.
