    Love this channel and your knowledge to catch stripers is huge. We have caught plenty with great captains and there charters but just bought a targa tracker and wanted to catch them in the mouth of the river. Used your method plus a three swivel with weight method and we caught our first ones on our own. Thanks brother

    I finally got a boat with my brother. I really appreciate how you let us learn from what you do. I will be sure to use your methods as we put it in the water this spring. Thanks again Mike

    Beautiful fish man. Thanks for showing how to release them. Feel like a lot of people don't do it and a lot just do it poorly, seems like you have a good system.

    Some guys offered us eels a couple days ago, we took them only because we didn’t have any bait. We were low key talking shit saying that these eels weren’t going to work. 30min later we caught the BIGGEST striper I’ve ever seen. Shit was soo wild that we had to go back and get some more eels just for reassurance. The next day we went back with the eels and caught 5 MONSTER stripers within 2hr. It was unbelievable, from now on our go to bait are eels.

    Just letting you know I watched this video on my way to my boat. I stopped and picked up 3 eels and trolled just like you said and I hooked up. First time I've ever had any success with eels. they usually end up in a knot and all my stuff is tangled. Thanks for the tip.

    How do you keep your eels from “spinning” when trolling?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im really crawling. I vary speed, but rarely go very fast. Usually I’m just a few tenths of a mph over what the current gives me. If your eels are healthy they swim along fine. If you see birds behind your floats you’re spinning them 😛.

    How deep are you trolling the eels? Do you want them to be close to the bottom?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anywhere from 5 feet to 40 feet behind the boards. They will pull straight down when lively.

    Up here on the hudson river we drift fish and alot of times we are moving 1-1.5 mph
    With eels should i leave the baitrunner open and let them run with it a second or keep it closed? Circle hooks are mandatory

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t. You are moving at the same pace as the river so speed won’t affect the hook up unless your anchored

      Awesome!! I appreciate the comment. The biggest factor is water temp. I don’t even think of moving south until water is below 46-47. Some fish stay all year.

    Man I love your videos! Wanted to use planer board for a long time and finally picked some up for the open ocean off cape cod on calm days. Sounds like they are great for fishing lots of rods/covering lots of area when fish are close to the surface. I assume if I mark most fish at 20ft and deeper planer boards aren't the way to go, or is there likely bass I'm not marking up top? WiIl Experiment :)

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

      Sure! The floats are made by RediRig. You want the TOS planer floats. I designed them for RediRig. Team Old School float. (I don’t get a cut or anything, just free floats)😁. I’m using Zakk Royce signature planer boards here, but there are LOTS of good ones around. Zakk is on Facebook and can hook you up. Thanks for watching brother!

      EnterNameHere I would troll to get started. That’s your best bet until you learn the areas better. Fish the edges of the main channels to start. Troll simple mojo chute rigs like these amzn.to/32pOp1o
      There are some Striper there all year, but the big numbers won’t show up until fall/winter.

      Raymond Bushey Would love to, I’m always looking for new spots to fish, we were actually supposed to do a video up there this past May with Keepin it Reel, but we were on a huge bite in the lower Raritan and didn’t want to leave it😉. I used to run charters on the Roanoke River in NC many years ago, it’s a very similar fishery. We would drift big River Herring before they were protected with floats. Huge numbers there. Shoot me an email in April, maybe we can connect and shoot some video 👍👍👍 mikesmedley9@gmail.com thanks brother!

      It’s tough to keep that spring scale from bouncing all over the place in a rocking boat. If you don’t pinch your fingers right on the gap the fish will never stop bouncing. I don’t keep big fish anymore but when I did you would see a pretty big difference in what a fish weighs on land versus in the rocking boat. Not to mention the shaking arms when holding a 50lb plus fish up and away from your body without the tail touching the deck. The struggle is real 🤣
