    Just seeing this video now and again I echo the sentiments of many here that it was very helpful. One thing I noticed just recently, and please correct me if I'm wrong, is that the ride height adjustment rod can have an impact on the amount of static sag available. For example, if you run a shorter ride height rod to lower the bike, there will come a point where the amount of leftover play in the suspension, i.e. static sag or fully unloaded shock, will be reduced since the shorter rod will pull in the swingarm away from the ground/towards the seat.

    Hi Nellie, great video and very well and clearly explained. One thing I don't understand is the setting of the ride height before adjusting the pre-load of the rear shock. If you check this with the wheel loaded, rather than fully extended, if you find you have to adjust the pre-load, then surely this will change? Isn't this why Ducati recommend you check and alter the ride height unloaded?
    Also this method requires the purchase or fabrication of the correct ride height tool. I've seen on a couple of web-sites where they measure to the fixed rear mount of the exhaust.
    One more thing, I think it's worth mentioning that most of the height adjusting rods will be seized solid and VERY difficult to move. I had to spend a couple of hours with mine on the bench and vice to get them free.
    Very much looking forward to the suspension set - up video.

      Hi Jono,
      This is the reason why I wanted to separate the discussion on Geometry settings and suspension adjustment, you are correct they can impact one another so you have to recheck ride heights after setting preloads.
      As for the rear ride height you can also use the length of the adjuster itself, there are plenty of sites that share the detail. I would only use rear seat for measuring preload as its unlikely you will have a standard height to start from.
      Good point on the ride height adjuster, I always work them loose before I start any work on a new bike.

    Can you share what the eye to eye length of your linkage rod is now, for those of us who don't have the tool? Or is your shock itself also non-standard length.

    Hello mate. Such a great video. Thank you once again.
    Can wait to see it finished. So I guess the right order will be
    1 chain tension
    2 sag
    3 geometry
    Right ?
    For the rear can you please next tell us what is the distance from wheel to exhaust bolt ?
    Thanks :)

    Excellent video! (As always), really enjoyed that, thanks. Took delivery of my 748R this time last week, so am spending time going over it, correcting a few niggles but i have noticed that the PO has indeed dropped the forks through to -15mm like yours were. Not got the rear measuring tool, but may try and source it so that i can measure if it's also been set up "aggressively". Looking forward to part 2 with the damping teach-in!

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wish I still had my 748R, nice bike 😎
      15mm drop through is very aggressive and lowers the bike a lot as well as making it nose happy. Finding a setting you feel good with may take a little time.

    • @spencerabaker
      @spencerabaker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DesmoWerx Thanks Nellie, yep, that’s part of the fun, playing with settings, very much looking forward to it. QQ....would you see the fork drop height to be relevant/consistent whether it’s on an Ohlins fork (mine) or a Showa? I assume that both forks were the same length, so it then becomes a geometry thing rather than a damping discussion, and therefore yes, 15mm drop is still aggressive irrespective of the fork? Am I correct with that thinking?

    Really helpful video thanks. I kind of knew most of the front stuff but the rear has been a mystery. Will you be doing a suspension settings video. I'd be interested in what settings you run (I know it depends on things like rider weight, preference and even the particular track) cheers

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martin, Glad you found it of use, yes will do a suspension settings video as a few people have asked to see one. Will do it once the bike is complete and fully weighted. 😎

    great video, keep them coming I really enjoy them. Would you happen to have any recommendations for an 848 rear swingarm height measurment?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I used my 1098S at 240mm, Stock is 230mm but I have seen suggestions going from 235mm through to as extreme as 255mm, I suppose as with all things suspension it will be down to how you like the feel of the handling when inputting the change.

    Really enjoy your videos, very relaxing and informative. I'm wondering what brand track stands you use for your Ducs? In the US, all we get are Pitbull brand and they are $250US and always sold out....I like the style of the ones you use, seem more pro.

      Hi Matt, the workshop stand is an ABBA stand with the Ducati fitting kit, the rear paddock stand is the Ducati paddock stand, the front a biketec one.

  • @robevans916
    @robevans916 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Usually a rear ride height figure is selected to achieve a desired swingarm angle. On track sport bikes typically like to be between 12-13*. Did you ever measure swingarm angle to see where your ride height resulted?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob, no I have not gone that deep with the settings. It might be an interesting one to look at on the Ducati's 😊

  • @suicidemotoprod
    @suicidemotoprod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video, interesting content.
    Do you have an input on increasing the ride-height in both rear and front?
    Lets just say you put your specific numbers on it and ad 5-8mm more in height. Would it affect the 916 chassis in a positive way?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would alter the centre of gravity by moving it up, so the bike handling would change slightly, depending on how you raise the height might also affect the wheelbase.

  • @zx9b2
    @zx9b2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you make significant changes to your 1098s' geometry to make it handle the way you like around silverstone??

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Russotf, I dropped the front forks by 5mm and raised the rear the same 5mm. However I like the bike to be front end weighted so remember what works for me might not feel good for you.

    Amazing video! Learned so much about stuff i'd heard about but didnt know what it meant. 2 questions!! With a 748 you adjust chain tension with a eccentric hub, how does this affect the geometry and should i adjust the hight when i tention my chain?
    And how does hight affect handling. What happens when i lower or raise both front and rear at the same time??
    Keep the vids coming!

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Flyingdutchy01,
      Yes the adjustment of the chain will alter the ride height marginally, so always worth checking afterwards.
      If you raise and lower the whole bike you will make changes all over the place but basically the main impact is centre of height change making it easier or harder to change direction due to the amount of force needed.
