In this clip, Sinbad spoke with Luenell about his marital journey that included divorcing his wife, having another child after the divorce, and eventually remarrying her after 11 years. Sinbad also discussed filing for bankruptcy and the stigma associated with it. However, Sinbad learned that bankruptcy is a tool that can be used to change one's life. That is all they need to know, because when your back up against the wall not one of these people criticizing you will have anything to contribute. Most Americans were never taught, and never REALLY learn about money and how to handle it. I would guess that goes double with Foundational Black Americans. "Show business" and 1099 can be a real trip. One year you miiiiiiight make $3.5 million (which sounds like a lot, but it's NOTHING in a major city (like NYC) or a state (like California) with a high cost of living), and you have to file your own taxes out of that, and pay employees, an agent, an attorney, a CPA, etc. I could see where net net, YOU end up with maybe $102,000................and you might go 2, 4, 8+ years between jobs or major paydays. Hell, a tiny 1BR condo in Harlem or certain parts of Brooklyn could easily cost $500,000 or a $1 million, PLUS $600 or $800/month HOA fees. It's no joke. Also, the irony is, if you're a superstar like Eddie Murphy or Will Smith, you can live wherever you want. But, if you're not on that level I would imagine you almost "have" to live (near where the gigs are) in southern California or New York.
"Show business"/independent contractors is a tough game. Ask any barbers/hairdressers, 100% commission salespeople, restaurant owners, etc. how they've been doing during this Coronavirus thing.
