'56 White 9000TD: First Start in 18 Years

- It took my brother, my dad, and myself the better part of a day to get everything tuned up and repaired so that we could fire up my 1956 White 9000TD for the first time in 18 years. It only took two sniffs of ether (one for each start up) to get it running. We ran it for almost an hour while checking over everything, starting and stopping it to see how it started on diesel only, to fill the oil system back up, and to check out the hydraulics (no clutch yet, started it up with the hydraulics in gear).

Use to drive over the road in the 60's with a 9000 white, no a/c, no sleeper, just making a living. Brings back memories when I was a much younger man. Thanks for the video.

Latest update: I sold the truck to help fund buying a house. It went to a good home and is being restored and converted into a tow truck.

It can be driven legally on the street once it has been restored and passes its federal safety inspection. As it sits, it has a tare weight of 13000 lbs and is 96" wide. It's the same size as a small school bus. There are several trucks similar to this within 50 miles that are on the road on a regular basis.

Love seeing old iron come back to life. We're going to be working on a '56 Chevy car that's been sitting for 34 years and try to fire it up. It has the original motor so we're hoping it will run and be rebuildable.

White did have an agricultural division that purchased Oliver and Minneapolis-Moline sometime in the 60s and was later bought out by AGCO. White started out as a sewing machine company and the sons of the sewing machine company wanted to start an automobile company. They did and they made cars and trucks until the mid-teens, when they switched to truck-only production. There is a lot of information available about the history of the White banner available online.

I drove a 1964 White 9000td,an old Acme Markets truck , back in 1973.It had a 220 Cummins and 10spd Road Ranger.Those old trucks were so simple and basic.
It had a compression release that came in handy.Thanks for the memories it brought back,as that was a great time for me. I just got my Class I as they used to call it.And so began my career in diesel trucks.I just retired 2 years ago,but still love those old trucks! lol.

She looks like the one that was in the movie "Convoy".When I turned 21 in 1973 I was put in a 1964 9000TD.It was an old Acme Markets truck from Philadelphia,Pa.My job was to transport rendering products,probably the stinkinest job in the world.I just got CDL (called Class 1 back then) license,and I was in my glory with that old truck and a 38ft. Strick Trailer and my stinky load!

I remember as kid seeing a lot of White 'Super Power' gas, 'Mustang's' and diesels. The east coast was good for seeing many Whites, Diamond T's International 's, Mack's, Autocars, GMC 'cannonballs, Dodges, Ford's, and sometimes the occasional Pete, KW, or White-Freightliner. This was along time ago for me as I'm. heading toward 71. Their were also Federal's and Brockway's.

Nice! My '57 IH with a 220 Cummins sat for 18+ years without starting. Short story shorter, put in batteries and a little bit of ether and it fired right up. Built oil and air pressure and charged right off the bat, too.

That old truck probably made somebody a lot of money back in the day. Hopefully, it can be restored, and go on to be a useful some more.

The White-Freightliner brand was a joint venture between White and Consolidated Freightways to build cab over engine (COE) trucks in the 60s and 70s. White continued to make their own conventional cab trucks and COE trucks throughout this time frame. Freightliner also made their own conventional cab trucks. Eventually White was bought out by Volvo and Freightliner was bought out by Diamler.

Seems like a JN-130 or C-160 i to me! What a great sound! Grew up with these and JS-6-B and sold & serviced 21,000+ Cummins engines in all applications save submarines😂

We had a few of these still kicking around at a concrete company that I used to work for up in New York State we had a Flat bed with a crane mounted on it along with a few 2 old dump trucks and a semi that were all used as yard trucks they were far from being road worthy. We also had about a dozen old Cement trucks that were used for parts supply

I didn't know White used the "block" lettering in'56. Must be the "White 7000/9000's,(Diesels). The Gasser Wb/WC series used the "written script",up until '59,or '60?? These Whites are my favorite trucks,and I am a TRUCK NUT!! THANKS For gettin' her runnin' again!! Hope you restore the old GEM!!
This truck is supposed to have the "script" grill emblem. The block lettering emblem came with it when I bought it and the holes had been drilled into the grille frame. If you take it off, you can see the outline of where the script emblem used to be.

If everything checks out, most engines can run after sitting even longer. My '45 Farmall A sat for 30-ish years before I started it up again. If it has fuel, compression, and spark, it will run. Sometimes you also have to have a pinch of luck going your way too.
teeter1939 man you are lucky sounds like earlier she tried to do a run away on you good thing she caught herself in time are the engine would have been toast or if you covered her air to breathe then it would have worked too but still nice truck

I love it, history is back on the road to make more history! I love hearing these old trucks come to life. Lol so much i posted my own videos doing the same thing with my 1980 Chevy Kodiak. I would like to see more of the truck

Nice vid. Keep a CO2 fire extinguisher handy when firing a diesel which has been sat for some time. They can get loose and when that happens spray into the air intake to starve it of oxygen, that will shut it off without doing any harm to the motor or turbo.

First semi I ever drove was a White 9000, Cummings 220, 10 speed,single screw with a tag axle. Pulled a milk tank.

@51CORNBINDER I'll add the key style master disconnect once the battery box is replaced (hopefully over this summer). Until then I'll keep taking the hot wire off of the batteries and tuck it out of the way. I do the same thing to my IH when its parked for more than a day at a time.

The trick is to not panic and have a piece of solid wood to block off the intake.
or a huge towel. had a VW diesel that loved to run on blowby- dang thing got 55MPG with my foot completely off the throttle going down the highway

I found her while looking at a friend's truck. This one was sitting off to the side looking rather neglected. I called the faded phone number on the door, spoke with the widow of the owner and it was for sale. It took a few months, but we worked out a price and it followed me home.
The crane is one of the main reasons I bought the truck, besides it being an antique and stub-nosed. I plan on using it for hauling my two tractors and larger hit and miss engines (some day pipe dream). I plan on painting the whole thing. I'm not a fan of "show room trailer queens", but it will shine when it needs to and get dirty when it needs to.
The 9000 means that it has a 90" BBC length, and TD stands for Tractor Diesel. This truck originally had a 5th wheel. The frame was stretched roughly 6 ft and the rear axle moved back to be near the hinges on the bed. You can still see where the axle used to be, this truck had a very short wheelbase for something of this size.

English-Ash I DO, old trucks have always been an interesting thing for me, I was born in 2002 and I prefer the old truck ERA over our "new generation" of Semi Trucks. My Favorite old Truck Brand in Diamond Reo, or Hayes
So that makes you 13 then? Long way to go yet before you look at these old trucks at a classic show or in a museum and say "I used to drive one of those when it was new!"
Im not saying I drove one, Im just saying I like the look of them better than todays trucks.
My Dad worked at White Motors in Cleveland for 30 years. He retired in 1973.
He might have even worked on or seen this truck. Pretty cool

The TD stands for Tractor Diesel. White used letters after the four digit number to designate the different options the truck had. This truck was originally a road tractor with a 5th wheel. The frame was stretched approx. 6ft. and the flatbed and crane were added. A C-series Cummins with a turbo would be a C-190. There was a supercharged variety that was designated the C-180.

This engine is well before any kind of ECM made it into trucks. The only electrical parts on the engine are the generator and the fuel shut-off solenoid, and that is wired directly to the ignition switch. Some of the sending units are electrically based, but they are wired directly to the instrument cluster.
You forgot the “GLO-Plug” that you use when injecting a spray of diesel fuel in to the intake manifold that ignites when contacting the hot plug😊 (Pump, pressure gauge and electric switch on the right hand o f dashboard towards the passenger seat)
Ether is for Jimmies that came as plastic capsules in a little cylinder you hit with a key or gsmmer 😂😂😂
