Let's hope the surviving Velvelettes, like surviving members of the Marvelettes, Cotours, Elgins, Kim and Brenda, whatever members of Jr.'s band still survive also know their ways around a pc and their way to TH-cam so that they KNOW we haven't forgotten and we still cherish what they gave us. If this stuff caught as you were entering your teens, as it did me, you know that it may as well be part of your DNA, because you're never going to stop being drawn to it. I'm its prisoner and I love it.
"Really Saying Something" is one of Motown's CRIMINALLY underrated hits, and the beautiful, enormously talented Velvellettes should have been FAR BIGGER. Another example of these ladies' talent is their other biggie," Needle In A Haystack." Quintessential mid-sixties American music !!!!
As Berry Gordy didn't see the star quality in this group, he couldn't be as smart as he thought he was. With the right promotional machine behind them, these babes could have really achieved something.
Ms.Betha McNeal ws absolutelt awsome as was the intire group. She was my music teacher in Mddle school inKalamazoo Mich and it was such an honor to have her teach me what she knew!!
This video is one of the coolest on TH-cam!! If you aren't in a good mood after this, then it is really a bad day! Unreal how these ladies can still bring it!!
I can only vaguely recall the Velvelettes in the sixties. Seeing this video has made me realise I missed an excellent group. The rest of their music is also fantastic. They are still young in this video (1989) even though over 25 years had passed since their formation. To think that they are still performing after 2010 is incredible. Many thanks to Ian Levine for putting this video up on youtube.
I was in my car listening to 60's on 6 on Sirius XM, and this song came on. It blew me away so, that I had to break many a speed limit getting home to come on TH-cam to see the video. These women had the voice and the charisma that was lacking of the Supremes.
Checked out these ladies because I heard Amy Winehouse talking about them in an interview and I love Amy so much but I'm extremely glad I listened to The Velvelettes
bop,bop shoobie do wah ! brilliant ! just freakin' brilliant ! i had this track on a single back in the day on release ! it came out here in the UK back in 64 on the black stateside label along with marvin gaye's "how sweet it is to be loved by you and the supremes "where did our love go " this is memory lane ! thanks for sharing ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Dave
Razelma, you're just fabulous. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart. I wish there were a few more like you around. You, Soren, Phillip, Andy, NRGFan and a few others, are the reason why I take as much care as I do with this music. You're my inspiration. And you make the effort in editing all this stuff actually feel worthwhile.
I love this video, I find it very charming and a little bit camp! The ladies look like they're really enjoying themselves. One of my all time favourite songs.
This is a fantastic video. These girls still sounded great. I would rate Cal as one of the best female vocalists of the (all) time - Lonely Lonely Girl Am I is THE classic girl group record. BUT I have never seen The Velvelettes live (nearly did once when they appeared with Martha & Vandellas but the venue was too full). Girls, if you're ever in Crewe - bring those dresses and call in - our living room is just big enough for a one off performance lol.
I love this Velvelletes video! And I really am a huge girl groups fan... But if you folks on here like this sound...and rockin' the house...do yourself a little favor (if you haven't already) and key in The Spinners...and check out their live performances of Might Love...and the one of them at the 75 Grammy's...just surf around over there. The Spinners rocked the house too...about a decade or so later.
Blimey! Here goes, more sleepless nights on TH-cam, catching up on incredible acts I missed as a kid. You'd think Motown consisted of just the Supremes, Smokey, Marvin, and little Stevie by the ladles of brainwashing blather doled out to kids over the decades!
The Supremes had crossover appeal and 3 really fine, diverse, talented voices that harmonized beautifully. There is no reason to compare these two groups at all as they were totally different types. The Velvelettes were much, much closer to The Vandellas in sound and style. I don't think Motown had enough material for another girl group - which was a dying breed by 1964. The Velvelettes should have been snapped up by another label if they had great potential.
Berry Gordy Jr. thought the Velvelettes had the talent and look to go all the way but he was never able to capture a niche for them. An album would have made a difference and was repeatedly put off when various girls came into the group as replacements. Hearing all that went UNreleased is a revelation as these girls could put any song over! "He Was Really Sayin' Something" also was recorded with the Marvelettes and issued as an album track.
This is not one of my personal favourites but I love what you are doing. Wonder whatever happened to Bottom & Co? Also, while not on either Motown or Gordy, I would love to know what the Lovelites are up to today.
I liked the '80s remake by Bananarama and Fun Boy Three, primarily because I had a vague memory of an original version from the '60s. It must've sounded like this. By the way, do they have glitter makeup on their shoulders and arms here, or is it just the quality of the video image? Goes with the "bridesmaid dresses", I guess.
Left to right are Millie and Cal Gil, then on the right is Bertha Barbee. Missing from this event is Norma Barbee, cousin of Bertha. This song exemplified the sound of Motown. In reality, The Velvelettes should have been Barry Gordy's number one group as they are much more talented than The Supremes. But Barry was more into Diana Ross and the rest is history. Cal has a superb lead voice and I believe that Norma, Bertha and Millie had the best background voices in the business.
Carolyn Gill's voice is still superb.
How do you NOT love these girls? Pure American music at it's finest.
+davidbspamboy Pure great music.

Someone heard my prayers!! I love this song!!!! Thanks so much for posting it by the Velvelettes.
As Berry Gordy didn't see the star quality in this group, he couldn't be as smart as he thought he was.

Great song, great version, great sound quality.
Ms.Betha McNeal ws absolutelt awsome as was the intire group. She was my music teacher in Mddle school inKalamazoo Mich and it was such an honor to have her teach me what she knew!!

The girls are smokin'!! You just crank this one up on your computer sound system and rock the house!!
They had more presence than all the others combined.

HP Lundholm you go
Tamla Motown it's number one in the world.

Nice.
What a class act. All they needed was a real break with a decent manager and they could exceed the Supremes maybe.
wait a sec, I had this by the Vandellas or either the Marvelettes back in the 60s...ok I am confuzzed now....
I think they are from Kalamazoo Michigan
I remember that body glitter stuff. Every school disco, this stuff was liberally applied to any bare skin.
Ah happy days...
love this now and then..
DC hand dance classic.
the girl group who should've eclipsed the Supremes !
Norma had to work on the day we shot this video, nineteen years ago now.
Bananarama's original lineup have reunited and are touring. In concert they're doing this arrangement of the song. It's great! search on TH-cam.
the original always sounds allot better. i know the group banana rama did a copy or this in the 80s. but this one is better.
Gillian Scott you are unique
This is not one of my personal favourites but I love what you are doing. Wonder whatever happened to Bottom & Co? Also, while not on either Motown or Gordy, I would love to know what the Lovelites are up to today.
I wish I could have said something
These are the greatest ladies and why don't females look like this today? These 20 year olds today look like they died 3000 years ago
I liked the '80s remake by Bananarama and Fun Boy Three, primarily because I had a vague memory of an original version from the '60s. It must've sounded like this. "With his collar unbuttoned.." Never knew they were saying that..
the velvelettes should've eclipsed the supremes
Millie is Smoking (The one on the right of screen). Would love to meet her
Do you mean on Carolyn's right? That's her sister and on Carolyn's left is Berths McNeal
+Bertha+
i don't know their names, but wasn't the late Sandy Tilley (later with Martha & Vandellas) an original member?
Left to right are Millie and Cal Gil, then on the right is Bertha Barbee. Missing from this event is Norma Barbee, cousin of Bertha. This song exemplified the sound of Motown. But they are onlñy three??????
SUPER SONIC RACING
They've nicked Bananarama's song (not LOL)
hey ! i've sample this vocals on my new track "Dream Dust" , come and move your feet !
girl, at least you didn't dress them like Britney!
