    thank you so much for this tutorial! i've been looking for elegant ways to let something pop up from under the "drawer" of a matchbox and peek through a hole in the "mantle" when sliding it open (and being able to let it fold togehter neatly when sliding it back in, too!). this tutorial greatly helped me! thanks for sharing your knowledge with us with these very easy to follow videos!

    I'm making a pop-up book of memories for the love of my life. I'm watching your videos because I want to make a book of memories we made together during our courtship, and the last page will be how I want to make more, with a ring hidden to ask for her to marry me. This, I think, is exactly the way that I think I want to "pop" the question, by having her pull a tab and the flap comes up with the ring attached behind. I'm going through the basic videos again because I am not at all a creative type, but I've used parallel folds to construct one or two pages that have come out better than I could have done if I tried to do it on my own. I'm visiting Rome in 2 months and hope to have the book finished by then. THANK YOU for these videos and for giving me some sort of idea of how to be unique in asking her to marry me.

      @@thepop-upchannel4919 So I decided to go a slightly different route. I chose to do the “door opening” mechanism, as I felt it looked more like a ring box with the top opening. I really appreciate your videos and helping me to find something creative and unique as an engagement idea. Here is the final result if you’re interested. th-cam.com/video/An1-0yfufJU/w-d-xo.html

And I loved even more to learn the very simple mechanism (which was unsuspected by me so far!!) of how to create the effect of moving the cloud, surprising us with what was on the other side of it, which we did not see at first sight. I also loved knowing how to open the two window bands at the same time and how to make a cat stand up, ha ha!!! Thank you so much for another amazing classroom, dear teacher Duncan !! See you soon!! Hi ! I love your videos and they have been so helpful to me but i was wondering if there was a way to combine this technique and the automatic one? Im trying to get a door (a flap moving with the direction of the pull strip) to open but i can seem to figure one out to work with the automatic one

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First make the automatic strip as shown in Tutorial 16 at 0.40 - this is the variation where the strip goes under the page then reemerges. Then add the flap as shown in Tutorial 26 at 0.40. Make sure that the slits in the page where the strip goes under and then comes up again are cut back enough to allow the strip to lift up a bit. The distance from the spine fold of the base to where the strip sticks down (usually about 1cm.); will be the same as the distance from where the strip is stuck to the flap and where the flap is stuck to the base.

  • @brendahom7842
    @brendahom7842 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    is there a way to make a pull tab move a flap in a direction perpendicular to a flap? e.g., pulling down on a tab that would make a little double door open?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! It is possible, but it is a bit difficult. The basic
      components are explained in Tutorial 27 at 3.50. Use a hub to hold an “L”
      shaped piece to the back of the page. This “L” shaped piece should be able to
      rotate easily. Use two pull-strips of the type shown that have a little flap with
      a hole in it. These two strips are attached to the page using “sleeves”
      (explained in Tutorial 25 at 3.00). They are attached at right angles to each
      other - one is the strip that juts below the bottom of the page and is pulled
      to activate the mechanism - the other is the strip that lifts the flaps (“doors”).
      The arms of the “L” shaped piece go through the holes in the flaps. The work
      will need to be quite precise; the strips must be able to move as smoothly and
      easily as possible; keep the strips as close to the hub as possible to generate
      maximum movement; the “L” shaped piece will take quite a lot of strain so may
      well need to be double (or triple) thickness. I hope this all makes sense and
      that your mechanism works beautifully!

    I want to make the one that's folds away from the tab, but I want 3 flaps on them that all flip simultaneously, is that possible?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is possible. All three of the flap mechanisms (where they go through the page) would be the same. The strip that activates them needs to be modified - the end that emerges from the page and that is pulled remains the same - underneath the page it is modified so that it has three "prongs" each of these then has a flap attached.

  • @roderickmurray4425
    @roderickmurray4425 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another fantastic tutorial, but this one's a bit hard to figure out without the measurements that you've already marked out. I'm following your book as I watch the tutorials. Should i be using the same proportions as for the automatic pull strip on page 85?

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, sorry, not very clear. The first type of flap (shown working at 2.52) has similarities to the automatic pull-strip - the measuring here isn't very important just make sure that the cut where the strip goes down under the base isn't too close to the flap or it will restrict the movement. On the second type of flap the important measurement is shown at 4.58 the distance between the (rather faint) pencil mark at the base of the flap and the crease is 0.7 cm. - I see that in the book on page 138 I've given a distance between D and E as 1 cm. The most common mistake people seem to make is to make the slots between the little tabs and the main flap too wide - they only need to be about 2mm.

      @roderickmurray4425 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Do you know if the animation in the popup book "little mermaid" by Robert Sabuda, the one where ariel jumps over the rocks (it's the first page and on that page the last animation inside of a booklet) is possibly made with the double-action flap but automatic? because when you open the page and close you see one hand disappearing first then the other... thank you if you could help :)

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That mechanism in The Little Mermaid is an interesting one. It's actually a variation of the mechanism explained in Tutorial 42. In the book the mermaid's arms are attached to a couple of narrow parallel strips which are attached to one edge of a Parallel-Fold. The movement is generated by a hidden V-Fold which moves up as the base is opened. Sorry it's hard to describe just using words without any illustrations. If you have a copy of the book it should be clear enough. It might be a good mechanism to feature in a future a tutorial.

  • @donnaleiber6214
    @donnaleiber6214 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made the first two types similar to yours. For the first (where the flap moves in the same direction as the pull-strip), it looks like I can rest the paper base flat on the table or even adhere it to a card and it still works. However, for the second one (where the flap moves in opposite direction), it seems like the mechanism needs space underneath and/or slightly raises the base, so it couldn't be operated lying flat on the table nor adhered to a card. Is this accurate or did I somehow build it wrong? Thanks.

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got it exactly right. Usually in pop-up books all the pages are double thickness so that parts of the mechanisms (the strips, hubs etc) are protected and hidden from view. If you look at Tutorial 26 at 5.50 you can see that as the strip is pulled and the flap flips the two layers of the page separate slightly.

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The action is created using hubs and pivots (Tutorial 27). It's a clever variation as there is probably only one hub but the pull-strip will be forked so that it has two ends behind the page - the end that moves the leg in the direction of the strip will be attached below the hub; the end that moves the leg backwards away from the pull strip will be attached above the hub. It's tricky to explain without a diagram but I hope this helps.
