also to back up the fact that she is a princess: out of all colours she wears purple a color that has always been linked with royalty due to the difficulty of accessing such pigments. I believe there was a sumptuary law about the wear of the color purple in antiquity I know there was such laws in roman era but I 'm not sure about greece.

it is because the natural dye is extracted from certain sea snails and it is really long and really rare to produce now tyrian purple is a little bit more red than Megara's purple but bright colors were still a mark of wealth in ancient greece

I not only agree with you Fangirl but my mind has burst with an even bigger theory to add. Megara was the princess of Thebes but had a rebellious nature and didn't want airhead friends who would use her. She fell in love with a commoner and prayed to their goddess Apotrophia (which is a byname for Aphrodite the Goddess of love and this other name was believed to be instituted by Harmonia the goddess of harmony) for a way for them to be together. Through a dream, the King was told to give the boy a challenge that he would win a hand in marriage with the princess if successful. While trying to complete this challenge the boy was gravely injured. Desperate for a way to save him, she turned to Hades against the goddess's advice. Hades offered to bring the commoner back to life in exchange for Meg becoming a servant. She agreed on the condition that after the sentence she would be able to go home.
When telling the commoner he promised to wait for her. But over time the Kingdom became restless with the princess's absence and the lack of a royal wedding. Feeling the King went back on his word the commoners turn on him and even the goddess they worshipped. Bitter about being tied to a woman he could not have, the commoner boyfriend turns to another girl. The broken-hearted king dies from sadness and stress and the other children move away wanting nothing to do with a broken kingdom. The high-class citizens pray to Aphrodite for help but the commoners reject her.
In fury, Aphrodite curses the commoners which is why Thebes was so messed up in the movie yet there were well kept rich buildings in the more developed areas (like the villa where Hercules went to live with his trainer after defeating the hydra). Worse I think the curse followed these citizens until they repented for turning on Aphrodite and Meg's love. Which came full circle when Hercules came along because he was Meg's, fated new love. Accepting him broke the curse after the hydra was defeated. Also, I think people in his old village might have treated him badly because since he was adopted and troublesome (by accident). They might have feared he came from Thebes and was therefore cursed to bring disaster.

Hercules and Megara actually had three sons together, but thanks to a trick by Hera, Hercules ended up killing her and their three children, Hercules then had to complete a set of trials to atone it. the last one being to kill Hades pet three headed hell hound Cerberus. the disney version is better for children, but I wish they had stuck more to the original story of the fact that Hercules was born from only his father Zeus and Hera should have been the bad guy, just Hades.

    • @kayleearafinwiel8186
      @kayleearafinwiel8186 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Katelyn Lewis In the original myth, Hercules' mom was not Hera, but the mortal woman we see being his adoptive mother at the beginning of the movie. Zeus got around quite a lot, and Hercules was raised by his mortal mother and her husband. Hera, not Hades, had it out for Hercules because Zeus cheated on her (the same way she had it out for all his illegitimate children) even though Alcmene and Amphytrion named the boy after her (Hercules is the Roman spelling; Herakles means "Glory of Hera") to try and alleviate her anger it did no good. When Hercules grew up and married Megara, and had children with her, Hera cursed him to go mad and kill them all - the Twelve Labors were a punishment for his murder of his family (even though Hera caused it).

I have always thought that Hades actually used pain and panic to seduce Meg's boyfriend because Hades is a shady deal maker (like the stereotypical, cartoonist car salesman). He does not play fair and normally, when not under pressure, will only make deals that will always benefit himself in the end.

I always loved Mythology especially the Greek ones. While I’m not a fan of Disney version of Hercules, because of how poorly they represented it, I still favored it and it’s what got me to love the world of myths and fantasy. Since Disney has been remaking their old movies into live action films, I really hope they make a live action movie of Hercules and make it more canon to the original story line. Ps, while I’m not a fan of the Disney trope of evil step mothers, in this case I would make an accption because Hera was Hercules step mother and she didn’t like him!

    • @TheFangirlWatches

Honestly, Meg's situation in the movie reminds me of a character in a book series I'm reading. In the series, said character (Della Tsang) had a boyfriend who left her and got engaged to someone else three months later. Because of this, as well as some family drama, Della was afriad of relying on anyone else for fear that they too would turn their backs on her. Della's boyfriend left her because she was turned into a vampire (He didn't know that) and as a result, her skin became perpetually cold. He told her to come back to him when she warms up again, and left.

When she mentions Adonis being her ex in the series it's more of a gag that their horrible date was enough to make her want to get the magic amphora with water that makes you forget. She clearly didn't love Adonis at all, definitely no where near enough to sell her soul to save his life.
My headcanon is that it might have been Achilles or a different hero. Hear me out. If she was in love with a man who she looked at as her hero (someone she thought would always love her and defend her) and he left her high and dry, it would make her affection for the selfless Hercules mean even more.

All the episode with Meg did it right.
    She was in two.
The first one was a spoof on James Bond. Hercules as James and Meg was the bond girl.
Yet they were both teens then. She worked for Hades even then. But something happened and forgetful potion falls on them when they about to kiss if I recall.
They all "eww who are you.." "eww bye" They walk away. So the potion finally worked in full, so when the film took place they didn't even recall that moment. When they were grossed out at their about to kiss yourselfs.
And the 2nd was the final episode. All of the series was Herc telling his new bride Meg about his teen years. Which is funny, for you think that one epi would ring a bell "OH! So you were the girl I meet in my teen years huh?" who say that did not... As final epi could not cover all their reactions for each epi/story he was retelling.

    • @cthonisprincess4011

Hades and Thanatos were more or less the same characters at times. In Euripides "Alcestis" Hades is described as ‘dark cloaked and winged’ and confirms that Hades and Thanatos were the same god, and there are a plethora of stories that mention Hades getting attacked while simply doing his job as the god of death. Hades also had a title that refers to him as "god of death and darkness" ("Hesperos Theos") and even the ancient authors make it clear that they don't especially distinguish between the two figures.
Moreover, as the King of the Underworld, only Hades had the authority to bring back someone from the dead, trying to do so without his permission was one of the ways to capture his wrath.

Euripides' "Alcestis" confirms this when Alcestis dies and a ‘dark cloaked and winged’ Hades comes to retrieve her soul, prompting Herakles to get into a fight with him, ultimately making Hades give her up and restore her to life.
Apollodorus likewise mentions that Herakles had to fight Hades in order to be allowed to restore Alcestis' soul to her body.
In another story, Hades is sent by Zeus to retrieve King Sisyphus' soul. Stealthily King Sisyphus asked Hades why Hermes, whose job was to escort shades to the Underworld, had not come for him. Because Hades was busy trying to come up with an answer, he was unaware that chains were being placed around him until it was too late. As long as Hades was tied up, nobody could die. Because of this, sacrifices could not be made to the gods, and those that were old and sick were suffering. The gods finally threatened to make life so miserable for Sisyphus that he would wish he were dead. He then had no choice but to release Hades.

Lovely theory as always, but I have another topic for you: where is Persephone in all of this? She’s supposed to be in the underworld every fall and winter yet she’s no where to be found. And does she know about Megara? Would she feel jealous of her? Food for thought.

According to the mythology, at that time Creon wasn't king yet, it was Œdipe, as he was a siner (killed his father and married his mother without Knowing who they were) so the gods punished Thebes with desasters and diseases unitl that siner shows up. If you want to know more, read Antigone by Sophocle, or a much modern version by Jean Anouille but it's not as rich as the original one ☺

River styx, the place where, in mythology, dead dreams go to be forgotten. Dreams as in ambitions. In the disney version it's the river where dead souls go to be forgotten. When you think of it, neither version is that different from the other. However, the river didn't become the place for forgotten ambitions until humans came along. Before humans it was once a beautiful river with nectar flowing through it. Now it's poluted with forgetten dreams and regret

Maybe the king was de throned somehow after the royal family broke apart when they disowned Meg for the Hades situation and that’s part of the reason why Thebes is so chaotic when we see it in the film? Or maybe seeing his daughter get into a situation like that broke his heart, he couldn’t continue to rule and there were no heirs, again leaving Thebes with no government?

If Meg was immortal while working for Hades, that would make sense why Hades was so cavalier about this caveat Hercules introduced when striking their deal (that she wouldn't get hurt when he gave up his strength). But then she DOES get hurt. Why? Does trying to save Hercules count as a sufficient betrayal of her "contract" with Hades, thereby making her susceptible to mortal wounds? Was Hades desperate enough to overlook this loophole, or just too frantic and caught up to even think about it?

Pretty sure Megara is also one of the 2 wifes Hercules had. Also although told through mythology everyone goes to the underworld, this still is divided into seperate parts 1 for the real goodie goodies, 1 for the normal citizen (it is told your memories of earth will be taken so you won't be tight to any earthly burdens) and there is the part where you get tortured by the furies for eternity. Greek Mythology yay!

Well actually its one hundred percent possible to retrieve an already dead person from the underworld. Orpheus (son of Calliope and goddess of poets and musicians) almost did retrieve his true love from the underworld. He charmed Hades and Persephone into letting him try and retrieve Eurydice(Orpheus's love) from the dead. The only reason why he failed was because he looked back at Eurydice to make sure that she was still following him against Hades wishes. Also in the myth about the princess that Meg(in the movie) is based off of her love died so she became a servant to Hades to get him back.

Maybe being a princess and LGBTQ was wrong and she decided to try women. her parents might have found her with women and disowned her so she was fully Hades. But she is always sassy with hades and hades always get mad at her. he could have easily tortured her but maybe just maybe he fell in love with her so he dint want to hurt her. and would rather see her dead and spend eternity with him than be with Hercules so he killed her and she went to the underworld
