Blending Old & New Lacquer Paint For A Perfectly Sh*tty Paint Job!!

  • The 1932 Ford Roadster is practically road ready, but there are a few things left on the punch list. The one major item left is the paint on the areas that needed rust repair, and the passenger door. The car is painted with old lacquer paint and any new paint will require some work to help match whats existing. Matt and Steve get to work painting the interior first with some Eastwood Rust Encapsulator on all of the new floor panels. After some careful masking, Matt gets to work spraying some primer, and then some black lacquer. Once the paint has cured, Matt gets to work aging the new paint to blend with the old!! We think the results are amazing, let us know what you think in the comments below!!

I would love to see a car get complete repaint with the goal of looking like someone who completed a black lacquer repaint. Not a Roadster Show winner, just a few teenagers spriaying their hot rod for the first time back in the day. I understand what you're doing to this car. The reason I ask is I have a Model A body with ancient green paint.

Hey Matt, I really appreciate the respect you've shown for the people who built this '32 roadster back in the day. Thanks for bringing it back to life! In the end, we're really only caretakers of these old cars. Down the road, someone else will likely own the roadster. Here's hoping that future owner will respect the car, those who built it, and those who saved it from the crusher and preserved it.

First off you're doing what my dad would have been doing decades ago. A 32 Ford with the original Hot rod look. That car is closing in 100 years old. It's great to see somebody that is this into them. You're trying something new with the paint. Back in the day I think it's safe to say they didn't have TH-cam and Google or about your fancy tools. Hey you are replicating what could have been if it had been stored a little nicer as you said. It boggles my mind that these cars are still out there and more so guys like yourself you are still working with them. Shiny and pretty is great. But what is great is a 32 Ford roadster that you can drive down the road and if it gets a rockchip it's an improvement because that new paint just blended in that much better! To sum it up in a simple term. How cool is that!

A lot of older cars have mismatched panels as time passes due to repairs done years ago. I think it looks fine. Maybe a little flattening agent in the mix would get you closer to the faded original paint? Either way it looks great.

Nothing like lacquer. I pulled my '28 out of a barn where it sat under hay and poop for almost 60 years. Wash with Dawn, hand rub it with compound, buffed it out with glaze. All except 1 spot in the rear quarter, you can literally shave in the reflection in the gloss. Mirror finish 🤙

Ive had great results lettimg the lacquer actually dry (5-7 days) then wet sanding the two together old and new. It blends well then buff it and if you want "sh1tty" dont wax it, a few months of sunny driving and it all naturally hazes together and gets a great natural look. Lacquer is high attention required paint (lots of rubbing) so it doesnt take long without wax for it to haze

    • @IronTrapGarage

    Hey Matt,
The shitification seems to be working.
At least as seen on the video.
That Red you applied first looks really bright.
I wonder if a Red oxide primer would work in place of the bright red.
    Anyway, looking good.

1950’s red oxide primer wasn’t freaking bright ORANGE. Was actually more brownish.

Nothing like masking of a car for a paint job

Maybe a light coat of flat clear over the new black would tone the sheen down?

I dont know if your tryinng to save work or time. But the work you put in blending could just be put into spraying the whole car with new black laqure and letting time and the sun tone down the shine. Its counter intuitive. But like you said at least the bare metal is painted now. I couldnt stand the pressure of worring and fuss about aging I would just paint the whole thing to save the constant labor of aging of new paint. Just let it age it self. It will go shitty on its own very quickly. Going shitty has never been a problem for me. Just how I see it. It would be easier to spray the whole thing then let go shitty on its own it would happen soon enough. Spray it all then use some fine steel wool on the whole thing to knock off the shine.

Obviously you don't understand the meaning of a "survivor"

@@terry3665 i think you dont...and from the bitter comments maybe matt doesnt either, a survivor is as it has SURVIVED. it can have extremely minor things done but metal work and fake patina is not a survivor. Dont everyone get yer panties in a bunch, i think the car looks neat and i do get what matts doing. I just wish he could do it from a less defensive and bitter place. He gets that way on the hamb as well and honestly ya cant please everyone! So why try
