I love the Bogleheads philosophy. Just pick a cheap and efficient (from a tax pov as well) index fund and be consistent with the investments. Most people focus too much on picking and managing the right funds (which is fine if you're rich), but saving and managing budgets is usually overlooked. Just Keep Buying does a much better job explaining than I can in a yt comment.
And this is for long term goals. Shorter term goals obviously won't stand the volatility of the equity market.
