I really appreciate you getting up close to show the examples of heathy seeds vs underdeveloped ones. I was wondering how it would even be possible for these flimsy ones I’ve harvested were supposed to work out but couldn’t find anything showing exactly what I should be looking for (never bought zinnia seeds just harvested seeds from store bought) Thanks a million, and keep up the great work!!
Nothing more satisfying than growing a successful crop of anything off of your own saved seeds. We need to know we did a good job. It’s not as easy as you think if you’re not in to it. First time saving Zinnias this year and can’t wait to see what happens (or not!) lol Anyway, great video and channel! You are well spoken and to the point…and you care. New Sub here… Joel
Great topic and is much appreciated. I have harvested seeds of numerous plants/flowers it's a great way to save money on seed, and a great learning tool in gardening to harvest seeds.
I harvest zinnia seeds as well. Just a simple tip, trim the heads before seeding. I take scissors and trim off the dead pedals close to the head. This makes seeding so much easier. Enjoyed your video. Happy planting!
Purposefully cross pollinating zinnias is fun. It's interesting to see what you get the next year. Cross pollinating your favorite flowers and colors year after year should eventually end up with you having your own personal favorite zinnia!
Great ideas. Love zinnias. I always save mine also. I label my ziplock bags with permanent marker. I spread them out on my dinning room table on paper towels for several days until completely dry. Then I bag them and label them. Have great success each year. It really saves money over time also. Love your videos. Very informative. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family. 😃
Thanks for mentioning when to harvest them-especially to leave them on the plant until the flower heads are completely dry. This was a very thorough video!
Some of my tall zinnias have a cone, much like a coneflower, and when I removed the petals to save the seeds I noticed that if I scraped my thumb over the cone, dozens of what look like seeds drop out. They’re rounder than the “arrows” from the petals. Do you know if these are viable seeds?
Thank you so much!! It's our first year harvesting. I loved your video. Do you leave them in the envelope until spring? Freezer? (Also what software do you use to make your video?) Thank you again!! Happy Harvesting ❤️⚘️
Thank you! Apologies. I answered the question based on thinking you were asking about a different video. I don't freeze my zinnia seeds. I store them in envelopes or baggies until I winter sow them. I use youcut to edit and film/edit everything on my phone
My zinnias are doing great...I'm trying to save seeds but I have none drying up they still look fresh and beautiful except its middle Oct and neatly to freeze at night.Should I cut flower and let dry inside??
You could try that. I find I usually get at least a few viable seeds when I pick the flowers early. But it may not be as many as if you could have waited longer.
You could try. You never know, the seeds could be mature enough. Your best bet is to cut the flower head off once you are done using it and let the head dry completely, then check the seeds to see if there are any viable looking ones.
Help! What am I doing wrong? 99.9% of my harvested seeds look translucent. Only a few look like the zinnia seeds you showed in your video and what comes in a seed packet.
Hmm. I'm guessing you may have harvested the flower heads before the seeds were fully developed? The flowers need to be starting to lose their petals and drying up before you cut them in my experience
@@EsthersGardeningAdventures Maybe I waited too late? I didn’t harvest the flower heads until they were completely dry and had no petals left. (I can easily pull the “seeds” from the head.) The few good seeds I got that look like yours actually had dried petal remnants still attached to them.
Ah that could be it. The birds may have beat you to the seeds or the flower may have dropped the seeds already. What you are pulling are not seeds then.
Hey I see you got a lot of seed mind is short my first year I don’t know names I have sjogreans can’t get out a lot if you have extra I would love get I will pay postage .later flower friend

Thank you and welcome to my channel!
This is the best instructional video to show which seed will produce a flower.

Indeed! Thank you!

Oh interesting. Thanks for the tip.
This was such a great video. This is my second year saving zinnias and I am collecting seeds for next year.

That sounds like a great process! Thank you!
Great detail! Thanks Esther!
Thank you for this video! So very well explained

Very informative video, Esther. I appreciate all of the specifics and helpful tips! Thanks mucho!
You are most welcome. I'm glad you found it helpful!
Just harvested zinnia seeds today and i had the same experience mature seeds were on the outside.
Good to know!
Thank you. Very helpful video.
Thank you so very much. You are clear and concise .. Very helpful to me.. Wish me luck.
Fantastic! I'm glad you found it clear and easy to understand! Best of luck to you!
Very helpful video Esther. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you so much! You inspired me to harvest mine! And you taught me so much, thank you!!! 🧡❤️💜💙💜
I'm so glad to hear that! You are most welcome!
I hope you are going to save some aster seeds. Those were Fabulous!
Yes. I should. I need to look up how to save them.
Thank you! A great video.
Thank you for this. Where do you store the envelopes until the following spring? Do you start them indoors?
Yes I store them indoors

I am waiting for my zinnia to dry up. I love saving them.
I agree with the mature seeds.
They are such a fun flower to grow and save seeds from!
Very helpful, Esther. Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful!
Great video!
Can you save seed from a cut flower you had in a vase?
You could try. You never know, the seeds could be mature enough. Your best bet is to cut the flower head off once you are done using it and let the head dry completely, then check the seeds to see if there are any viable looking ones.
Excellent info. I subscribed!
Thank you!
Great video.Thanks very much
Glad you liked it.
I’m going to try saving my melon seeds
Nice!
If they are not open pollinated varieties they may cross pollinate if you have several varieties. If you just have one variety you are okay.

Demonstration works better than talk.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.

@@EsthersGardeningAdventures Thank you! I will keep trying with the blooms I have left.
PS. You’ve got a new subscriber from Zone 4B.
Wonderful thank you! And good luck!
My zinnias ar really short.... And I don't know why..😢
It could be the variety of zinnia. Some are taller than others.
I thought you pulled the flower head apart and the actual head part is also part of the seeds? Yes?
The seeds are in the head of the flower but you don't need the base of the head once you take the seeds out. You can compost or toss that out.

Try looking for free seed libraries in your area. Best of luck.
Plz keep lemgth of your video no longer than 4-5 minutes
