Marc Russo, you have become my favorite immediately when I first heard you. When altissimo hunters were into David Sanborn, you have become my main man instead. I wanted to play altissimos not in melodic and harmonic isolation; I desired to traverse the octaves smoothly without any noticeable "breaks"- no choppiness in octave transitions. David has had the art of successfully accomplishing this feat with fewer notes in succession. Marc plays not only one or two notes in cadenza-like spirit, but entire scalar and chordal patterns and melody and harmony fragments - in consecutive cluster, contextually. Marc Russo, Brandon Fields, Nelson Rangell, Gary Meeks - to name but a few altissimo practitioners - are deserving of much more credits as saxophone masters. I adore and appreciate Marc's giving Junior Walker credits for his (Junior's) unorthodox and almost-novel embellishments. King Curtis and Junior Walker were the masters of the 60s at altissimo and tongue roll and flutter tongue. Junior Walker continued into the 70s and 80s until his physical demise with some of these saxophonic feats demonstrated by Marc In the 50s, it was Earl Bostic on alto saxophone, and Sylvester Austin and Red Prysock on tenor saxophones. Grover Washington, Jr. also admitted to listening to and being inspired and influenced by both King Curtis and Junior Walker, especially when it was a question of altissimo and other saxophonic exuberance. Thank you Marc Russo. At the Movies has been curtailing your explosive ability and imaginative creativity. Yet, I do enjoy it when you are with your "Sax On The Beach" or even "At The Movies". Thanks, Marc, for Info and Sax demo. Thanks TH-cam!
Marc has that little extra that brings out the best. Very happy for all his success and the joy he's given to all of us music lovers. Humble and talented.
Wow! 👏 Thanks for sharing. Good sound on that mix. I was at that show in Québec city 9/7/2024 and very good sound during the show. Those virtuoso musicien are very friendly and its was possible shake their hands and said how they are good. I go to see you all next time in Quebec.
Just saw him with the Doobie brothers live two nights ago. This guy stole the show and he just elevated everything to another level. Just wanted to say that’s he is amazingly talented and fun to see live. Cheers
Thank you Marc; oh Man I // WE miss you. Thank goodness for recordings. Sanborn said more or less the same about needing to cut thru in his early Butterfield days.
What a beautiful man. Phenomenal chops - just home from a Doobie Brothers concert here in Sydney and am totally pumped! Can't stop smiling Thank you for this wonderful clip. Cheers - Dave
DAMN MAN!!! This dude is awesome!! Never knew who the sax guy was for Doobey Bros. Seems like a blast to hang with too!! Im not an altissimo guy but the overtone stuff and false fingering is sick!!!
AT LAST!!! ive watvhed soooo many video on you tube looking for some one to tell me how to make that rock growling sound. All of them gave me sooo much bs, the you come along and simply say " to get that sound you just hum". MAN ! BLESS YA MWA. from a yorkshire man in England.
great musician !!! when this guy leave The yellow jackets , i almost cry ahaha ! the song " tortoise and the hare" ! what a solo ! man i can cry every time ahaha ! so intense !
Mark Russo with Kenny Loggins, Live From The Grand Canyon, "Celebrate Me Home". If you haven't seen it i guarantee Marks Performance will blow you away!!
FOR ME A GREAT MASTER I REMEMBER MY IMPRESSION WHIT THE ÁLBUM POLITICS THIS MASTER PUT PURÉ ENERGY !!!!!! THANKS GREAT MASTER FOR YOUR TALENT AND VIRTUOSISM !!!!!
Até aonde um gênio pode chegar . Gênio ou dedicação posso dizer que é um conjunto porque tenho sax e sei o quanto é difícil praticar velocidade velocidade
This guy plays the sax like a trumpet player especially with the Doobie Brothers. I love his style & range. I had to bite down on the reed to get this high. Then got kicked out of the marching h.s. band for the semester. Lol
great video, thanks! he talks about books about false fingerings and overtones. which ones would you recommend? i am especially looking for books to get started in real THEORETICAL approchaes on jazz. i play the sax for about 10 years now and my improvisation is based on feel and simple changes.. i really want to step this up and play better. any book advices or something similar?
I can make a rolling "r" sound, but I'm still trying to figure out flutter-tongue (2 years, no results so far). Growling doesn't work for me either (tried humming, singing and actually growling into the horn, extreme-metal style).
maybe try a different mouthpiece, i couldn’t growl (humming) in my previous classic mouthpiece whatsoever, but after i got a new jazz one, it magically worked, and also altissimo became so much easier (tho now harder to control precisely, really easy to overblown the notes)
Check Marc Russo's on the 80ies Yellowjackets album; Samurai Samba, Politics, The Spin and Four Corners, his playing is amazing! Stopped listening when he left (apologies to Bob Mintzer) :-)
Revelation on the album Shades is one of my favs. I was a sax player in college in the late 80s and Marc Russo was my greatest inspiration! Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/itHxDmzjgMU/w-d-xo.html And I agree about Bob Mintzer. It was a totally different vibe...
I agree, I love Bob Mintzer, he is one of my favourite modern Tenor players, wonderful phrasing and tone but Marc Russo with his Alto was making the Yellow Jackets' sound unique and outstanding, although Russell Ferrante's compositions are always great and the band is clearly still recognisable, with Marc Russo they had a special sound signature IMHO. Marc Russo influenced me a great deal too!
I first saw Marc on the concert Outside from redwoods by Kenny Loggins then i started searching who were each of all those great guys Loggins brought together on that amazing job! th-cam.com/video/ZtqMnf23NTI/w-d-xo.html
BlasJohnny they are made in Taiwan and ASSEMBLED in Utah. They are NOT made here, just assembled here. Cannonball makes that very well known. Great horns. Incredible Altissimo here, wow.

One of my favorite players!
Who remembers his music from The Sims 1? Simply a masterpiece.
Whoaaaa! Forreal??
And Simcity 3000. Did the sax on that one.
Marc has that little extra that brings out the best.
Very happy for all his success and the joy he's given to all of us music lovers.
Humble and talented.
I've always loved his playing. Thanks for letting us enjoy this natural moment with Russo.

The best saxophonist in the world, Marc Russo!
Zombie Michael Brecker wants to know your location!
Great to see and hear Marc! While I love Bob Mintzer, I was so bummed when Marc left Yellowjackets! Has he ever said why they parted ways?
Marc Russo is my favorite alto sax player!! The first time i heard him the Yellowjackets i got hooked on his sound directly!!
Thank you Marc; oh Man I // WE miss you. Thank goodness for recordings. Sanborn said more or less the same about needing to cut thru in his early Butterfield days.

Marc Russo is amazing!
Wow. So much talent.
His domination of the altissimo range is beyond comprehension
Love the finish on the alto
First heard Marc about 15 years ago at a Doobie's concert. He made the show special and added so much color to the songs
great musician !!! when this guy leave The yellow jackets , i almost cry ahaha ! the song " tortoise and the hare" ! what a solo ! man i can cry every time ahaha ! so intense !
